MEASUREMENT: METRIC Wood 10 Modern buildings and construction plans in most of the world, including Canada, are now drawn and built in metric. Metric construction plans are always written in mm, but your ruler and tape measure are all in cm and meters. What to do? Metric measurements are easily converted by moving the decimal. To covert cm to mm, first write your cm measurement with a decimal and one zero. Then, simply move the decimal place one point to the right. Example: Write the measurement with a decimal: 1 cm becomes 1.0 cm. Now move the decimal one point to the right: 1.0 becomes 10. You've done it. Now change the cm to mm… 10 mm. To change meters to mm, add a decimal point and 3 zeros. Example: We write 1 m as 1.000m Now move the decimal point 3 points to the right: 1.000 becomes 1000 You've done it. Now change the m to mm… 1000 mm. Try the following conversions: 1. 1 cm = _________________ mm 5. 62.5 cm = _______________ mm 2. 10 cm = ________________ mm 6. 2 m = __________________ mm 3. 1 m = __________________ mm 7. 1.8 m = _________________mm 4. 5.5 cm = _______________ mm 8. 12.3 cm = _______________ mm Now look at the ruler: 1.0 cm = 10mm MR. VANAKKER 5.2 cm = 52 mm 7.9 cm = mm MEASUREMENT Fill out the following in mm: 1. 2. 3. 4. MR. VANAKKER MEASUREMENT
