During my time as a journalist, I worked in the UK, Spain and the US, covering world-changing events and developing top-level sources across Europe. Those years gave me an invaluable insight into financial markets and the reasons behind their moves. I have now moved into investment writing, having held positions at Insight Investments and Capital Group. In 1994, I earned a Fulbright scholarship to do a Masters in Financial Journalism in the US. I also hold a Diploma in Creative Writing from Birkbeck college, London, and an initial BA degree from the University of Navarre, Spain. Financial News Feb. 2011–Jul. 2011 Investment Banking Editor London I managed Financial News’ Investment Banking team for six months, coordinating coverage of the biggest stories in investment banking, such as new regulation, banks results and the sovereign debt crisis. My responsibilities included: Managing three reporters, focused on debt capital markets, equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions. Editing a weekly, one-page in-depth analysis piece by each of the DCM, ECM and M&A reporters, and writing an investment banking 900-word analysis piece. Participating in social events involving the European heads of investment banking at the top ranked investment banks in Europe. The Guardian Jan. 2009– Jan. 2011 Business Correspondent London At the Guardian I covered credit markets, restructuring, hedge funds and other issues at the heart of the global credit crunch, such as structured finance and credit default swaps. 2 I brought those topics, and their significance, closer to the non-specialised but educated reader. I followed, and broke stories, on the following themes: The European debt crisis. I published exclusive interviews with Elena Salgado, Spain’s finance minister, in the midst of the crisis, and with Bill Gross, founder of Pimco, the world’s largest bond fund, just months before the Greek bail-out. Web involvement: I wrote real-time web coverage for events such as the last UK election (I spent the night live-blogging at Pimco’s offices in London, as we followed the effects of the election on the bond market). Reuters Corporate Finance Correspondent - Restructuring Part of the corporate Top Talent Programme 2006 – Sept. 2008 London During the two years, I had 92 “beats” (scoops) officially recognised by Reuters. About 57 percent of my stories were self-generated, almost three times the average at Reuters. My main focus was: Hedge Funds: I focused on hedge funds as big investors in distressed companies, and reported how crucial they are in insolvencies, such as Spain’s Martinsa Fadesa. Private equity/M&A/Restructurings: Private equity firms are attracted to turnaround situations, including companies that have already been structured more than once. I followed corporate stories such as Focus DIY or Schefenacker, and regularly broke stories through sources at the top private equity firms, including Blackstone and TPG. Regarding insolvencies, I covered Lehman Brothers, Eurotunnel and Martinsa Fadesa. Bloomberg News Reporter May 1997-May 2006 London My main duties were: 2002-2006: UK utilities since 2003, Spanish between 2003 and 2004, and French and British since March 2005. I covered the €25bn Gas Natural-Iberdrola bid in 2003, and the Gaz de France and EDF IPOs, as well as the Gaz de FranceSuez merger. I attended meetings and press conferences in Paris, Madrid and London on a weekly basis. 2000-2001: Developed new beats: smaller companies and brokers. I made an Excel list of the main UK brokers and their client companies, calculating which banks had the best-performing clients, in terms of stock market performance. 2002-2003: Equity capital markets. I developed a spreadsheet that calculated which banks' IPOs had been the most lucrative for investors, in terms of stock market performance. The model ranked IPOs by sector, subsector (classified by me) and by country, on a European basis. 3 1998-1999: Acting team leader of Bloomberg Spanish TV. Managed 15 news anchors in London and offered editorial guidance to a staff of 30 in Madrid. Reno Gazette-Journal (Gannett Inc.) Reporter 1995-96 Reno, Nevada, U.S. I developed a new Hispanic beat for the newspaper, writing profiles and in-depth stories about the Mexican immigrants who were moving to Nevada. As a business reporter, I developed new ideas and wrote front-page stories about the local cost of crime and the socio-economic impact of a new motorway that was built near the town. El Periodico de Catalunya 1993-1994 Reporter Barcelona, Spain I was given my first full-time job after I broke the story, as a freelancer before graduation, of the near bankruptcy of Hotel Arts, a five-star hotel being built for the Barcelona Olympics. IT Skills & Software Excel: I have used Excel to track DCM, ECM and M&A situations, developing my own models to come up with stories – including the development of a table to see which banks offered the most - and least -profitable IPOs. In the year 2000, at the top of the Internet bubble, I developed a table that showed it was the smaller brokerages that used the term “sell” more often, highlighting that the big investment banks rarely had a negative view on their house stocks (those that they were brokers to). This was highly relevant as it was before former US regulator Eliot Spitzer forced banks to separate their research and investment banking units, amid potential conflicts of interest, in 2003.
