Barondale continues to be a wonderful place to grow and learn. We have had many exciting events over the
last few months. We have enjoyed celebrating the Olympics together and students have captured the
Olympic spirit at Barondale! Also, our Grade 5 students had the opportunity to go skiing and they had a
wonderful time. The Barondale Bookworm program continues to develop as parents, grandparents, and
community volunteers support young readers in their reading skills. As we look ahead to the Spring season,
we will be preparing for many exciting events for our Education Week. Read on to find out more about the
news at Barondale!

MOVE-A-THON FUNDRAISER
We were honoured to have an Olympic
torch bearer present at our Olympic
Spirit Day assembly. Mr. Steve
Michalopoulos, the uncle of one of
our Grade two students, carried the
torch in Simcoe, Ontario. He joined us in our gym
to share pictures and memories of his exciting
moment in history. Five thrilled students were
selected by lucky draw to carry the torch around
the gym. Our grade 4/5 choir performed a
beautiful rendition of the song "The Power of a
Dream." We listened to "I Believe" while enjoying
a slide presentation of our students participating
in simulated winter Olympic events during gym
classes, as well as photos of all students taking
part in our very own mini Olympic torch relay in
the school hallways. The Olympic spirit is alive
and well at Barondale!
Thank you to our Barondale community for raising
$5500 in our Annual Move-a-thon.
Students
enjoyed moving and grooving on Friday, February
12th wearing their glow bracelets in the gym! We
appreciate the hard work of the School Council
who organized this event to support Barondale
learners.
Thank you to Mrs. Spencer, Mr.
Biamonte, Mrs. Coulas, Mrs. Pereira, and Mrs. Roy
for all of their assistance to ensure a successful
event. A special thank you to Mrs. Radde who
organized and coordinated the event this year,
and for the last several years. Her efforts and
dedication to Barondale students are very much
appreciated!

By this point in the school year, we have found
that most parents are well aware of their child's
progress based on the ongoing communication
from the school. You will receive a letter with the
March report card identifying if your child is
meeting provincial expectations. Should your child
not be meeting provincial expectations, the
teacher will contact you to discuss your child's
progress and how to further support his/her
learning needs.
Our teachers are committed to providing parents
with the information they need to support their
child’s success and will continue to communicate
with parents throughout the school year. There
are three report cards each year and they
provide an overview of your child's progress over
a period of time. The best way to see how your
child is progressing in school is through the
ongoing communication you receive. Some of the
ways you keep up-to-date about your child's
progress include the following:

talk to your child about school

review your child's homework

monitor marks your child has received on
assignments and tests

ongoing communication with your child's
teacher

check your child's agenda on a daily basis
PARENT INVOLVEMENT STUDY
Peel board's Parent Involvement
Committee commissions parent
involvement study
In 2008-09, the Peel District School Board's
Parent Involvement Committee (PIC)
commissioned a study to help develop an action
plan that fosters effective parent involvement.
The report generated a greater understanding of
parents’ needs and attitudes regarding
involvement in their children’s education, and a
series of recommendations to bolster that
involvement.
The foundation of the study was 18 focus groups
held with parents, representing families with
children at all grade levels, located in all areas of
Peel, and from all socio-economic groups.
Research questions included how Peel parents feel
about their involvement, what barriers to
involvement exist and how schools can encourage
involvement.
To reflect the diversity of Peel, 12 focus groups
were conducted in languages other than English.
As the PIC also wanted the perspective of school
leaders, the study included three focus groups
with principals of elementary, middle and
secondary schools. A third phase to investigate
teachers’ views is planned for this spring 2010.
The full report and a summary version are
available on the Peel board website at
www.peelschools.org. Look for the link from the
"Spotlight" section of the home page.
