Planting the seeds of success
Judith M. Frusciano, NJALS President
Welcome back from Summer. NJALS
Convention 2007 hosted by Monmouth LSA
was a huge success. Many thanks to Debbie
DeFazio for chairing this committee, you and
your committee did an outstanding job and I
am grateful for your support. I thank you all for
voting me into my second term as your
President. I will continue to plant the seeds of
success.
Our Fall schedule has already started. Your
officers have kept NJALS growing throughout
the summer. Since we last met in May, we
have kept busy with hosting the Region 2
Meeting aboard the cruise ship Victory; those
that attended had a marvelous time. Thanks
goes out to all the members that helped and a
special thank you to Susan Mack-Mooney for
her forethought of suggesting a cruise for that
meeting, for getting the travel agents, keeping
abreast of excursions, dinner seating, cabins,
name tags, and the list goes on and on. With
leadership like Susie’s, how could anyone have
anything but a marvelous time!
The NALS Foundation Grant was well spent at
a membership drive to start a new chapter in
Middlesex County, and with the help of the
committee members, Linda Hanley, Gloria
Coppola and Susie Mack-Mooney my dream of
growing our membership has come full circle.
A new chapter Middlesex Legal Professional
Association has been chartered and officers
have been elected. Thanks to all who attended
this history making dinner meeting and became
Page 4
members, officers or secondary members.
Welcome Middlesex members! Your growth is
vital to our Association. I truly believe that all
your membership in this organization is a winwin for all, and that your participation spells
individual, County and State success. NJALS
functions through working committees that are
the backbone of our Association and your
voice must be heard to get the jobs done. I
invite you to actively get involved. Your Board
is committed to growth. However, innovation
only occurs when ideas are gathered from all
concerned, then shared and implemented. We
welcome and encourage your input as we go
forward to plant the seeds of success for
NJALS.
Your officers also held our Executive
Committee Informal Meeting at my home in
August and many committees are busy at work
taking care of business. We are looking for a
bid for Convention 2008. If your Chapter
hasn’t hosted recently why not think about
sharing your expertise and bid for Convention.
We would be most appreciative! We hear
people talk about growing their business and
their organizations but we rarely hear people
talk about growing themselves. If we want to
see growth in our Association and in our
relationships then I believe we must make
personal growth our goal. When you decide to
grow personally then you are better equipped
to handle career challenges, personal
challenges and any life situation that you face.
There is strength in numbers but it starts with
one.
In friendship,
Judy Frusciano

As NJALS Membership Chair I couldn’t be
more thrilled to bring you this news about our
new Chapter. Your Ad Hoc Committee, which
secured a Grant from the NALS Foundation
has put the funds received to good work. As
you know, a Mix and Mingle was held which
generated a lot of interest for the new Chapter
and so it came to be.
Wilma Casalduc
An organizational meeting was held on June
20th and ten charter members agreed to form
Middlesex Legal Professionals Association.
Four secondary members joined immediately
to show their support. As of their second
meeting held July 18th there was an additional
new member and two additional secondary
members. Middlesex is off to a great start.
Susan Mack-Mooney has taken on the
challenge of President of Middlesex LPA to
help guide our newest chapter. Many of the
new Middlesex members have stepped up to

Career Poison – Traits to Avoid!
Susan Mack-Mooney,
NJALS 2nd Vice President
It may take anywhere from three to 15 months
to find the right job – yet just days or weeks to
lose it. Here are a few traits that are Career
Poison:
1.
Possessing Poor People Skills
A little likeability can go a long way.
Researchers found that if employees are
disliked, it's almost irrelevant whether they're
good at what they do, because other workers
will avoid them.
2.
Not Being a Team Player
Show you're a team player by making your
boss look like a star and demonstrating that
you've got the greater good of the organization
at heart.
3.
Missing Deadlines
Organizations need people they can depend
on.
Missing
deadlines
is
not
only
unprofessional; it can play havoc with others'
schedules and make your boss look bad.
4.
Conducting Personal Business on
Company Time
Keep personal phone calls brief and few -- and
never take a call that will require a box of
tissues to get through. Also, never type
anything in an e-mail that you don't want read
by your boss; many systems save deleted
messages to a master file.
5.
Isolating Yourself
Develop and use relationships with others in
your company and profession. Those who
network effectively have an inside track on
resources and information and can more
quickly cut through organizational politics.
6.
Fearing Risk or Failure
Don't be afraid to fail or make mistakes. If you
do mess up, admit it and move on. Above all,
find the
situation.
Page 6
learning
opportunities
in
every
7.
Having No Goals
Failure doesn't lie in not reaching your goal, but
in not having a goal to reach. Set objectives
and plan your daily activities around achieving
them. Manage your priorities and focus on
those tasks that support your goals.
8.
Neglecting Your Image
People draw all kinds of conclusions from the
way you present yourself. So don't come to
work poorly groomed or in inappropriate attire.
You want to project an image of competence,
character and commitment.

Welcome Governors
Marie E. Drangula, Parliamentarian
Now that we are starting a new year, I would
like to welcome all Governors. I hope to see all
of you at the Fall Board Meeting and ask that
you encourage your members to attend. Along
with the “regular” group of attendees I ask that
each chapter try and get at least one new
member to attend. If every chapter brought
one new member to each meeting, we would
have 6 more members at each Board meeting,
giving us 18 more members at Convention and
then try and keep the momentum going.
We all have the same goals, increasing
knowledge through legal education, promoting
our association through new members, and
having a good time doing so. I ask you all to
join President Judy in planting the seeds for
success and make this our best year ever.
Emerson’s version of success has always
inspired me and I would like to share.
Ralph Waldo Emerson defined success in a
simple life well lived as:
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of
intelligent people and affection of children; to
learn the appreciation of honest critics and
endure the betrayal of false friends; to
appreciate beauty; to find the best in
others; to leave the world a little bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or
a redeemed social condition; to know even one
life has breathed easier because you have
lived. This is to have succeeded.”

research and was founded in 1970 by the
parents of children with juvenile diabetes. This
is a disease which strikes children suddenly,
makes them insulin dependent for life, and

complication.
85% of JDRF’s expenditure

cure for diabetes and its complications through

The Flying “V”
Submitted by Helena Goworek
When you see geese heading south for the
winter flying along in the V formation, you
might consider what science has discovered as
to why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for
the bird immediately following. By flying in V
formation, the whole flock has at least 71%
greater flying range than if each bird flew on its
own.
People who share a common direction and
sense of common purpose can get where
they are going more quickly and easily
because they are traveling on the thrust of
one another.
When a goose flies out of formation, it
suddenly feels that drag and resistance of
trying to go it alone and quickly gests back into
formation to take advantage of the lifting power
of the bird in front.
It is harder to do something alone than
together.
When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back
into the formation, and another goose flies
point at the head.
It is sensible to take turns doing demanding
jobs.
Shared
leadership
and
interdependence give us each a chance to
lead as well as opportunities to rest.
The geese in formation honk from behind to
encourage those up front to keep up their
speed.
What do we say when we honk from
behind? We need to make sure our honking
is encouraging and not discouraging.
Page 8
Finally, and this is important, when a goose
gets sick or wounded and falls out of
formation, two other geese
will fall out with that goose
and follow it down to lend
help and protection. They
stay with the fallen goose
until it is able to fly or it dies,
and only then do they launch
out on their own, or with
another formation to catch up
with their flock.
If we have as much sense as geese, we too
will stand by each other in difficult times,
and we will be dedicated to each other’s
success.
Good Advice to Keep You Safe
Submitted by Linda C. Nieswand
Because of recent abductions in daylight
hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in
an emergency situation...
This is for you, and for you to share with your
wife, your children, everyone you know.
After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them
to someone you care about.
It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world
we live in.

Tip from Tae Kwon Do:
The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, do!
2.
Learned this from a tourist guide in New
Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or
purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it
away from you.... chances are that he is more
interested in your wallet and/or purse than you,
and he will go for the Wallet/purse. RUN LIKE
MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

4.
Women have a tendency to get into their
cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and
just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list,
etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be
watching you, and this is the perfect
opportunity for him to get in on the passenger
side, put a gun to your head, and tell you
where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO
YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
A.
If someone is in the car with a gun to
your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO
NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and
speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air
Bag will save you. If the person is in the back
seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as
the car crashes bail out and run. It is better
than having them find your body in a remote
location.
5.
A few notes about getting into your car
in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.
Be aware: look around you, look into
your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the
back seat.
B.
If you are parked next to a big van, enter
your car from the passenger door.
Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling
them into their vans while the women are
attempting to get into their cars.
C.
Look at the car parked on the driver's
side. If your vehicle, and the passenger side.
If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest
your car, you may want to walk back into the
mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to
walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER
TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better
Paranoid than dead.)
Page 9
6.
ALWAYS take the elevator instead of
the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be
alone and the perfect crime spot. This is
especially true at NIGHT!)
7.
If the predator has a gun and you are
not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you (a running target)
4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely
WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, preferably in
a zig-zag pattern!
8.
As women, we are always trying to be
sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or
killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a goodlooking, well educated man, who ALWAYS
played on the sympathies of unsuspecting
women. He Walked with a cane, or a limp, and
often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with
his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next
victim.
************* Here it is *******
9.
Another Safety Point:
Someone just told me that her friend
heard a crying baby on her porch the night
before last, and she called the police because
it was late and she thought it was weird. The
police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT
open the door."
The lady then said that it sounded like
the baby had crawled near a window, and she
was worried that it would crawl to the street
and get run over. The policeman said, "We
already have a unit on the way, whatever you
do, DO NOT open the Door." He told her that
they think a serial killer has a baby's cry
recorded and uses it to coax women out of
their homes thinking that someone dropped off
a baby. He said they have not verified it, but
have had several calls by women saying that
they hear baby's cries outside their doors when
they're home alone at night.

Chapter Happenings
Middlesex LPA
A New Flower has Bloomed in the
NJALS Garden!
Middlesex LPA
On June 20, 2007, Middlesex LPA was
organized by 10 charter members and 4
secondary members. I am pleased to inform
everyone that on June 29, 2007, our national
association, NALS…the association of legal
professionals, issued Charter No. 1261 to
Middlesex Legal Professionals Association
(Middlesex LPA).
As a new chapter, Middlesex LPA obviously
requires guidance from a “seasoned” member.
Since I have lived in Middlesex County for the
past five years, I transferred my membership
from Union-Essex LPA and am pleased to
serve as Middlesex LPA’s first President. In
addition, the following officers were elected at
our June 20th organizational meeting:
Treasurer: Ellen Pellicane; Governor: Evelyn
York and Secretary: Anna Kolb.
Our chapter meetings are held on the third
Wednesday of each month and, in the future,
we hope to have joint meetings with our sister
chapters. Twenty people attended the July 15 th
meeting of this new chapter – and we had our
very first guest speaker – Author, Muriel J.
Smith.
Based upon the feedback received thus far, I
am confident that this new chapter will grow
and flourish in the NJALS garden.
Page 12
Please feel free to join us at any of our
meetings – we would certainly welcome your
attendance!
Monmouth LSA
Monmouth LSA has been quite busy these
past several months. We hosted our Annual
Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show on
Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Sheraton in
Eatontown. The Fashions were from Lord and
Taylor in the Freehold Mall and there were
many beautiful gifts and baskets as well as our
own beautiful models.
The weather was
cooperative for a change and we had a lovely
event.
No sooner did we exhale from that, when
Monmouth hosted this year’s NJALS
Convention. We all took part in “Viva Las
Vegas” to install our own Judy Frusciano for
her second term as NJALS President. Also
installed were Gloria Coppola as First Vice
President, Susan Mack-Mooney as Second
Vice President, our own Linda Hanley as
Recording Secretary (Linda was in Alaska
visiting her daughter, so Helen Goworek,
Corresponding
Secretary,
Union-Essex
Chapter stood in), and Kathy Nemec as
Treasurer. Convention was held at the Holiday
Inn in Tinton Falls. The Convention Committee
did a superb job and what happened in
“Vegas” stayed in “Vegas”.
Monmouth installed their new slat of Officers
on May 3, 2007 at the Holiday Inn in Tinton
Falls. Monmouth’s officers for 2007-2008 are
Lisa Pantaleone, President, Linda Hanley, Vice
President, Rachel Blasi, Governor, Evelyn
Eckhoff, Recording Secretary, Isobel Loffredo,
Treasurer, and Judith Frusciano, NALS
Representative. Also, Marjorie Mershon, as
Parlimentarian.
In July, Monmouth held it’s annual Day at the
Races, at Monmouth Park. Many of our sistersin-law from other counties came to enjoy the

day. The weather was magnificent and
although I don’t know if everyone went home a
winner, I know Monmouth’s Debbie DeFazio
and Linda Hanley did quite well. I came back
with $7.00 more than I went with, so I guess
I’m a winner too, albeit no a big one.
We just returned from our Region II Cruise to
St. John and Monmouth had quite a nice group
that went. Some of us even brought our
husbands along. It was this writer’s first cruise,
but definitely not the last. It was a wonderful
time and even though we had meetings to
attend on two mornings, we had plenty of time
to enjoy the festivities on the cruise.
Morris County LSA
On May 15, 2007, Morris County LSA held our
installation of officers and began our new fiscal
year under the leadership of Linda
Komorowski, PLS. Congratulations to all.
In July we had our picnic meeting at Ann
Glynn’s home and enjoyed a White Elephant
Sale narrated by Betty Neuwirth, PLS. A great
time was had by all. During the business
portion of our meeting, we discussed the
ongoing plans for the upcoming Fall Board
Meeting, which Morris County LSA is proudly
hosting. The Fall Board is being held at the
Staybridge Suites in Parsippany, NJ on
September 14 and 15, 2007. We hope to see
many of our fellow sisters-in-law at the Tailgate
Party.
Many of Morris’ members attended the Region
2 Cruise on August 2, 2007, and I can say
everyone had a great time. There was much to
do on the ship from enjoying the casino, the
shows, Captain’s Champagne Cocktail Party,
the tour of St. John and the Reversing Falls,
and last, not least very good and informative
legal education seminars.

Union-Essex LPA
We have our dinner meetings at 6:30 p.m. with
networking and socializing from 6:00 to 6:30
p.m. at various restaurants in the Union-Essex
area.
On May 31, 2007, our installation dinner was
held at Aliperti’s Restaurant in Clark, New
Jersey, where a new slate of officers was
installed.
Helena Goworek is our new
president, and on June 12, 2007, she held an
informal Executive Committee at her home to
discuss our upcoming projects and our hosting
of the Winter 2008 Meeting.
At our regular meeting on June 26, 2007,
Helena again played hostess where we all
enjoyed a real cook-out, complete with all the
fixings. We also had a return of our famous
White Elephant Sale. It was an especially
good time for me to raid my daughters’ rooms,
and what I considered to be junk, turned out to
be a treasure for some of our members. It
was a fun evening, fill with laughter and great
food, and we even managed to get some
business done!
