FIRST GRADE NEWS

LANGUAGE ARTS
Next week we’ll be using literature to learn about some interesting animals. Our class will look
into the question “Why do some animals have spots or stripes?” We’ll read the informational
text Amazing Animals and learn about what eight different animals have to help them as they
grow up. Then we’ll enjoy the classical fairy tale The Ugly Duckling.
Sight Words: baby, begins, eight, follow, learning, until, years, young
Phonics Skills: r-controlled vowels er, ir, ur
Vocabulary Strategy: Using a dictionary entry
Comprehension Skill: Conclusions-use details to figure out more about the text
Comprehension Strategy: Visualize-picture what is happening as you read
Writing Focus: Narrative writing-story sentences
Spelling Words: her, fern, girl, sir, stir, bird, fur, hurt, turn, third
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will expand their knowledge of the ways location and the environment affect people.
They will understand that people make choices based on scarce resources.
Words to know:
conserve: to avoid wasteful use of
consequences: something that happens because of something
natural resources: things found in nature (ex. air, water and trees)
recycle: to remake and use something again
extinct: gone forever
endangered: at risk of being gone forever
MATH
In math students have been learning about bar graphs and tally charts. We will continue to learn
about reading and interpreting data next week as well. Please review math vocabulary daily.
Please continue to do homework and go over math flash cards.
Vocabulary:
bar graph - a graph that uses bars to show information
picture graph- a graph that uses pictures to show information
tally chart - a chart that uses tally marks to record information
tally mark - a line that stands for one person or thing
data - information collected about people or things
information - facts or data about a person, place, event, or thing
SCIENCE
Next week in science we will continue to review various science topics. These topics will
include: The Life Cycles of Animals and Plants, Human Body, Day and Night, and The Four
Seasons.
The Fun Fair will be on Friday, April 10th. PIE is asking for donations to fill baskets for a raffle.
Also, PIE is looking for 2- liters of pop to be donated. All donated items need to be turned in to
your child’s classroom by Wednesday, April 8th. Thank you in advance for your donations!
