Ecology Foldable
Folding Instructions:
1. Start with 3 pieces of paper, layer them (space them out – ½ inch apart).
2. Fold them in a layered book design. Decrease the amount of space for the bottom
piece of paper.
3. Fold the whole book in half and crease (giving you a center line).
4. Take the edges of the four inside pieces and fold them in toward the center, to
form a pyramid.
5. Cut the edges off.
6. Draw a line down the center of the pyramid.
Content:
1. The left side of the pyramid will be terrestrial examples (from Maryland) and the
right side will be either aquatic (freshwater) or oceanic (saltwater) examples.
2. Label the first page with the title “Energy Levels and Trophic Levels of
Ecosystems”. Behind the first page you will draw the 3 types of energy pyramids,
label them, and describe each of them.
3. Label the second page “Producers”. You will be giving examples of producers
for each type of ecosystem. Behind the second page provide information about
producers.
4. Label the third page “Primary Consumers” (also known as first order
consumers). You will be giving examples of consumers for each type of
ecosystem. Behind the third page, provide information about primary consumers.
5. Label the fourth page “Secondary Consumers” (also known as second order
consumers). You will be giving examples of secondary consumers for each type
of ecosystem. Behind the fourth page, provide information about secondary
consumers.
6. Label the fifth page (top of the pyramid) “Tertiary Consumers” (also known as
third order consumers). You will be giving examples of tertiary consumers for
each type of ecosystem (do not use humans). Behind the fifth page, provide
information about secondary consumers.
7. The last page (sixth) will be an example of a terrestrial food web from your
examples in the pyramids. Keep in mind, the food webs have to be realistic and
actually occur in nature.
8. (Almost done) On the back of the last page, construct an aquatic/saltwater food
web of the organisms you listed in your pyramids.
9. Your food web must include at least 10 different organisms. Remember to include
decomposers.
10. Add pictures or anything to make it attractive.
