Dear Doctor:
We have completed the processing of your recent application for USMLE Step 1, and
you have been registered for the October 1, 2006 - December 31, 2006 eligibility
period in the Korea testing region. Please note that the eligibility period assigned to you
for this exam may be different from the one you selected on your application for one of
the following reasons:
- If your Certification of Identification Form was not received in time to assign the
eligibility period you selected, you have been assigned an eligibility period as described
in "Eligibility Periods" in the current ECFMG Information Booklet.
- Current USMLE policy states that you may not retake a Step within 60 days of your
last attempt on the same Step. Additionally, you may not take the same Step more than
three times in any 12-month period. If you have already taken this exam and the
eligibility period you selected on your application does not comply with these
requirements, you have been assigned to the first eligibility period that does meet these
requirements.
In the near future, the National Board of Medical Examiners(R) (NBME(R)) will mail
under separate cover your orange scheduling permit, which contains information on
contacting Prometric to schedule a testing appointment. (If your assigned eligibility
period begins more than six months from now, your scheduling permit will be mailed
approximately six months before the beginning of your assigned eligibility period.) You
can check the status of your scheduling permit by accessing ECFMG's On-line
Applicant Status and Information System (OASIS) on the ECFMG website at
www.ecfmg.org <http://www.ecfmg.org>. Although your scheduling permit will be
mailed by NBME, you should contact ECFMG by email at permits@ecfmg.org or by
phone or fax if you have questions or concerns about this document. Your scheduling
permit is a very important document, and you should be careful not to lose it. You
cannot schedule your testing appointment or take the exam without it. As soon as you
receive your scheduling permit, you should check that your name as it appears on the
permit is spelled correctly. If you lose your scheduling permit or the name on your
scheduling permit is not correct, you must contact ECFMG immediately. Name changes
or corrections to the spelling of your name must be received and processed by ECFMG
no later than seven business days prior to your scheduled testing appointment.
Extension of USMLE Eligibility Period
If you are unable to take a Step during the three-month eligibility period assigned to
you, you may request an extension. A fee is charged for this service. You may request
an extension on-line using ECFMG's Interactive Web Application (IWA) or by submitting
to ECFMG a completed Request to Extend a USMLETM Step 1 / Step 2 CK Eligibility
Period (Form 176). For detailed information on eligibility and procedures, access IWA
or Form 176 on the ECFMG website.
A pre-exam checklist, which describes the items that you will need on your exam date,
is available on the ECFMG website.
For current information on test centers in your testing region, visit the Prometric
website at www.prometric.com <http://www.prometric.com> or contact Prometric.
Sample test materials for all Steps and Step Components are available on the USMLE
Orientation Materials compact disc (CD). The USMLE CD will be sent to you by postal
mail. The same sample test materials are also available on the USMLE website at
www.usmle.org <http://www.usmle.org>.
Please refer to the ECFMG Information Booklet and USMLE Bulletin of Information for
detailed information on scheduling your testing appointment and taking the exam.
Both publications are available on the ECFMG website.
Sincerely,
Registration and Credentials Services

IN THIS ISSUE:
- REMINDER: DEADLINE FOR 2006 USMLE(TM) APPLICATIONS
- REMINDER: AVAILABILITY OF 2007 INFORMATION BOOKLET / APPLICATION
MATERIALS
**********************************************
REMINDER: DEADLINE FOR 2006 USMLE(TM) APPLICATIONS
If you are applying for a USMLE examination, refer to the following
guidelines for completing your 2006 application in time for it to be
processed. All dates are tentative and subject to change. You should
monitor the ECFMG website for updates.
FOR STEP 1 AND STEP 2 CK
The last 2006 eligibility period for Step 1 and Step 2 CK is October
2006 - December 2006. The deadline for ECFMG's receipt of complete
applications for this eligibility period is August 31, 2006.
To apply on-line using ECFMG's Interactive Web Application (IWA) for the
October 2006 - December 2006 eligibility period, you should submit the
on-line portion of the application as soon as possible. To complete your
2006 application, your completed Certification Statement (Form 183) or
Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) must be received at
ECFMG no later than August 31, 2006. Please note that this deadline may
be earlier than the deadline indicated in the Instructions for the
Certification Statement or Certification of Identification Form and in
correspondence you may receive from ECFMG. When the 2007 USMLE
application materials become available through IWA, you will no longer
be able to work on the on-line portion of an application for the October
2006 - December 2006 eligibility period. This transition is likely to
occur in late August 2006.
If you submit a paper Step 1/Step 2 CK application for the October 2006
- December 2006 eligibility period, your application must be received by
ECFMG no later than August 31, 2006.
If your 2006 Step 1 / Step 2 CK application is received after August 31,
2006, it will be rejected, and you will be required to reapply using the
2007 application materials. If your 2006 application is rejected, any
payment received with your 2006 application will be credited to your
ECFMG financial account. The first eligibility period for which you can
apply using the 2007 materials is the November 2006 - January 2007
eligibility period.
FOR STEP 2 CS
Applicants who are registered for Step 2 CS are assigned a twelve-month
eligibility period that begins on the date that their registration
information is entered into the Step 2 CS scheduling system. Typically,
this is the same date that the registration process is completed.
If you use IWA and submit the on-line portion of the Step 2 CS
application before the transition to the 2007 application materials,
your completed Certification Statement (Form 183) or Certification of
Identification Form (Form 186) must be received at ECFMG no later than
August 31, 2006 to complete your 2006 application. Please note that this
deadline may be earlier than the deadline indicated in the Instructions
for the Certification Statement or Certification of Identification Form
and in correspondence you may receive from ECFMG.
If you submit a paper 2006 application for Step 2 CS, it must be
received at ECFMG no later than August 31, 2006.
If your 2006 Step 2 CS application is received at ECFMG after August 31,
2006, it will be rejected, and you will be required to reapply using the
2007 application materials. In this case, your Step 2 CS eligibility
period will be assigned, as described above, after you submit a 2007
application and the registration process for your 2007 application is
complete. If your 2006 application is rejected, any payment received
with your 2006 application will be credited to your ECFMG financial
account.
REMINDER: AVAILABILITY OF 2007 INFORMATION BOOKLET / APPLICATION
MATERIALS
The 2007 Information Booklet and application materials are expected to
be available on the ECFMG website at the end of August 2006. You can use
the 2007 materials to apply for:
- USMLE Step 1/Step 2 CK eligibility periods ending in 2007
- USMLE Step 2 CS
Effective with the release of the 2007 Information Booklet, ECFMG's
Interactive Web Application (IWA) will be the only version of the
application materials available on the ECFMG website.
You can use IWA
to submit web-based applications for USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2
CS.
ECFMG will maintain on its website the version of the Information
Booklet that you can download and print. However, ECFMG will no longer
make available on its website the version of the application materials
that you can download and print.
By making the ECFMG Interactive Web Application (IWA) the only version
of the application materials available on its website, ECFMG is
encouraging all applicants to use IWA to apply for examination. There
are many advantages to applying through IWA. IWA validates that every
required question in the application is answered, decreasing
significantly the possibility that the application will be incomplete
and rejected. IWA saves the information entered in the first application
and makes it available for subsequent applications, eliminating the need
to re-enter all the information again when a subsequent application is
submitted. Additionally, for medical school graduates, the Certification
of Identification Form remains valid for a period of five years after it
is accepted by ECFMG. During that time, the applicant may apply on-line
for an examination without submitting another paper certification. IWA
is secure, easy to use, and available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
Applicants who may be unable to apply on-line must write to ECFMG to
request paper application materials.
All dates are tentative and subject to change. Monitor the ECFMG website
for updates.
