TENEBRAE WORSHIP SERVICE FOR GOOD FRIDAY ___________________________________ April 2, 2010 – 7:00PM Prelude Call to Worship “1Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:1-6 Introit Invocation Minister: Almighty Father, as we hear your word tonight, look with mercy on this your family for which our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, to be given into the hands of sinners and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Give mercy and grace to the living; to your holy Church peace and concord; and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; for with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. (Please leave in silence) A Worship Service of Tenebrae, from the Latin word for “shadows” or “darkness” has been observed in the Church since the fourth century, on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. Tenebrae is a service in which the Scripture readings trace the events of Christ’s passion. Through the service we ponder the cost of our salvation by meditating on the depth of Christ’s suffering, his crucifixion, death and burial. Though the Friday evening service ends with solemnity we know also of Sunday’s resurrection morning. Thus we may call this evening Good. _______________________________ “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 ___________________________________________ Cloverdale United Reformed Church Good Friday Tenebrae Service Cloverdale United Reformed Church “Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you with the help of wicked men put him to death by nailing him to the Cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him… Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Acts 2:22-23,36 Cloverdale United Reformed Church is part of the United Reformed Churches in North America. As a Reformed and Protestant Church we are part of that historic church that grew out of the 16 th Century Protestant Reformation. We believe that Scripture alone is our only guide for faith and life and that the historic confessions (Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession and Canons of Dort) faithfully summarize the teaching of the Bible. We are United as a body of Christian believers that gathers each Lord’s Day, where God is glorified through the faithful preaching of His Word, baptism and the Lord’s Supper are received and his church is discipled with care.
