Musical Instrument Lesson Plan Lesson/Activity Topic: Tambourine Moon Grade Level: Thoughts in Planning: Students will listen as the teacher reads Tambourine Moon, by Joy Jones. Students will need to be able to write short sentences. Students will be able to create their own tambourine using different materials. Students will be able to decorate their tambourine in a way that makes them feel happy. Students will get a chance to play their tambourine before and during reading the story again. Some challenges for the children may be using a hole punch to punch holes around the paper plates and tying the bells to the plates. Goal for the Learner: Students will listen to the teacher read Tambourine Moon and think about what makes them feel happy and not afraid. Students will write a paragraph explaining what makes them feel happy. Students will create a tambourine using different materials and decorate the tambourine in a way that makes them feel happy. After students create their tambourine, they will get a chance to play it before reading the story again and during certain sections in the story. Assessment: Students will be assessed on how well they are listening to the story and how well they are working while creating their tambourine. I will look over the paragraph they wrote about what makes them happy to see if they are using proper grammar. I will also assess students by making sure they are playing their tambourines at appropriate times. Materials/Media: Tambourine Moon, written by Joy Jones Paper Plates Glue or stapler String or yarn Bells Hole Punch Crayons, colored pencils, stickers, or colorful duct tape Paper and pencil Introduction: I will introduce the book, Tambourine Moon, written by Joy Jones. I will read through the book once, so students know what the book is about. Ask students if they have ever been afraid and what makes them happy. Ask students if they have ever seen or heard a tambourine before. I will show students my homemade tambourine before they create their own. Procedure: Read the book, Tambourine Moon, written by Joy Jones. Make sure students were listening by having a discussion about the book. For example, ask students what made Noni's Granddaddy unafraid on his way home? Have students write a paragraph about what makes them happy and unafraid. Once students are finished with their paragraph, students will create their own tambourine using paper plates, a glue or stapler, string or yarn, a hole punch, and bells. The teacher may need to help the students punch holes in their paper plates and tie the bells to the plates. After students are finished putting together their tambourine, they will decorate it in a way that makes them feel happy using crayons, colored pencils, stickers, and duct tape. Once students are completely done creating their tambourines, they will get the chance to play them before reading the story again. The teacher will tell the students to only play their tambourine when the word is mentioned in the story. Have a discussion with the students about the book and ask them how a tambourine could make someone feel happy. Allow students to show their tambourine to other classmates and let them play it one last time. Resources: Jones, Joy. Tambourine Moon. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1999.
