Procedure
Notes
Pre-task
 Read the following three words: good morning,
ringing, sing.
 Ask the students if they can guess today's sound.
 Put the ing flashcard on the board and say the sound
for the students to repeat.
 Show the flashcard of bells ringing. Elicit from the
students that the bells are ringing. Elicit the spelling
of ringing from the students and write it on the
board.
 Teach the action and repeat the sound with the
action.
 Show the flashcard of the sleeping dog and elicit the
spelling of sleeping.
 Mime other action words (see the suggested
vocabulary) and ask students to guess what they are.
 Ask the students to come to the front and do the
miming for the class to guess. Elicit the spelling of
each action from the students and write it on the
board.
 Help with pronunciation where necessary.
Write, draw or use flashcards for these
words.
It would be natural to use the present
continuous tense. ‘You are …ing.’
Extra flashcards which cover these actions
can be found in 'New Welcome to English'
sets 2B and 3B.
You can turn this into a competitive game.
Task
 Put the poster on the board.
 Sing the song, while clapping the rhythm.
 Sing the song a second time encouraging the students
to join in.
 Encourage the students to substitute sleeping with
other action words, and little dog with names of the
students like this: Are you reading? Are you
reading? Chan Chi Ming, Chan Chi Ming? The student
whose name is called has to mime the action and call

another student’s name.

Post-task
 Review the ing sound with the action.
 Play ‘5 and Out’ to revise the ing sound.
o Elicit five words using the target sound and write
them on the board.
o At the bottom of the list write ING!
o Students stand up and one by one they say the
words on the list – the 6th student shouts ING
and sits down.
o The next student starts again with the first word
and so on going down the list until the 6th student
is OUT again.
o Continue around the class (or in smaller groups)
until there is a winner.
 Change the five words and play again if time permits.
Lesson ing
You can point randomly around the class to
