When ing is added to a verb, it is usually pronounced with the preceding consonant as in sleeping. Lesson ing Action: The students pretend to ring a bell and say ing, ing, Ring! Tsuen Wan English Teaching Support Network Procedure Notes Pre-task Read the following three words: good morning, ringing, sing. Ask the students if they can guess today's sound. Put the ing flashcard on the board and say the sound for the students to repeat. Show the flashcard of bells ringing. Elicit from the students that the bells are ringing. Elicit the spelling of ringing from the students and write it on the board. Teach the action and repeat the sound with the action. Show the flashcard of the sleeping dog and elicit the spelling of sleeping. Mime other action words (see the suggested vocabulary) and ask students to guess what they are. Ask the students to come to the front and do the miming for the class to guess. Elicit the spelling of each action from the students and write it on the board. Help with pronunciation where necessary. Write, draw or use flashcards for these words. It would be natural to use the present continuous tense. ‘You are …ing.’ Extra flashcards which cover these actions can be found in 'New Welcome to English' sets 2B and 3B. You can turn this into a competitive game. Task Put the poster on the board. Sing the song, while clapping the rhythm. Sing the song a second time encouraging the students to join in. Encourage the students to substitute sleeping with other action words, and little dog with names of the students like this: Are you reading? Are you reading? Chan Chi Ming, Chan Chi Ming? The student whose name is called has to mime the action and call See Activity Book. another student’s name. Ask the students to open their Activity Book at Lesson ing. Ask the students to work in pairs to complete the task. Choose some students to sing their song to the whole class. Play ‘5 and Out’ to revise the ing sound. o Elicit five words using the target sound and write them on the board. o At the bottom of the list write ING! o Students stand up and one by one they say the words on the list – the 6th student shouts ING and sits down. o The next student starts again with the first word and so on going down the list until the 6th student is OUT again. o Continue around the class (or in smaller groups) until there is a winner. Change the five words and play again if time permits. Lesson ing You can point randomly around the class to designate students.
