Revenue Canada does not allow a filing of more than a 12 month period so these 3 months had to be filed separately. The next 12 months will be filed after the completion of the July 31, 2012 yearend. Next year, we will have a full year review beginning August 1, 2011 and ending July 31, 2012. Because the national competition is in May, a change was needed in order that all costs incurred with the competition remain within the same fiscal year. The balance of the RSC account as of May 6, 2012 is $12,611.45 (National and AGM expenses yet to be paid i.e. scholarship, director’s travel, and awards). Our national championship moved from the month of May, to the month of July in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. The championship was an exciting event with many great speed scores and creative routines. One highlight was the spirited performance of the senior female Brampton Acro Ropers team, who overcame an injury earlier in the day, and went on to capture the gold medal in their age category. Rope Skipping Canada now runs the national competitions and has a dedicated group of volunteers. These volunteers installed a new speed scoring system with electronic clickers at the nationals. Thank you to the provinces of British Columbia and Nova Scotia, who loaned their clickers to the committee in order to showcase the new system. It worked well. The province of Ontario has now purchased its own system. Spectators become more involved in the competition with this new system. In October, the board of directors held a working retreat in Mississauga. This retreat was made possible with financial help from the provinces, along with the approved budget at the previous annual meeting. The retreat was a positive experience with the board of directors focused on the direction of rope skipping in Canada. The Coaching Task Force has been working intensely on the CanSkip program, and a representative of that committee attended the retreat to advise the board of the program benefits. The board also learned about the Long Term Athlete Development Strategy and the Canadian Sport For Life Model. After thorough discussions and consultation with experts in the field, the board put in place a strategic plan regarding age categories at the national competition. In the year 2015, the youngest skippers at the national competition will be the 10/11 division. This decision falls in line with other sports in Canada and is supported by the Long Term Athlete Development Strategy. This year we sent one coach and two jumpers to the Canadian Sport For Life conference. The FISAC World Championship will be held in Tampa Florida in July. Our athletes have been training hard and our Team Canada staff has been preparing for this exciting event. Sarah Dobrowolski is the head coach and Tim Segato is the team manager for Team Canada. Both Sarah and Tim are well respected within our sport. Sarah is a former Canadian champion and three-time Team Canada member. Tim is a respected judge and a member of the board of the Ontario Rope Skipping Organization. This national competition in Moncton, New Brunswick will be a three-day event for the first time. The change will allow for shorter competition days giving our athletes and judges more time in order to prepare for the next day. This competition will also mark the first live streaming by Bell Aliant. This will give family and friends who cannot attend the competition a chance to see the events and it will also promote the sport. The board of directors has put in place a strategic plan with twenty-four outcomes that will be developed over the next four years. Dwight Lucas ROPE SKIPPING CANADA Page 9 RSC Judges/Rules committee report It was not easy taking over from Don Bruce. I would like to thank him for all his hard work over the years for the sport of skipping in Canada. Our rules committee meet a few times late last year to discuss this year changes. Most changes where for clarification of older rules and a couple new ones. The present committee work diligently together and were very successful in getting the work done that was needed for this year’s changes. Changes made this year were Space Violation clarification and who watches for it. Speed display system and what score is right. Trial end time clarification Post trial celebrating Disqualification rule clarification Group routine floor space clarification All suggestions were sent to the RSC board in late December for ratification. The new rule book was sent to Dwight and all the teams and it was added to the RSC website in late January. All changes were made with what the committee believes will improve the sport of skipping in Canada Mary Kish has made all the changes along with Dave Spong to the scoring program and it was ready to go in late January. We will be meeting again next year so if anyone on your team has a suggestion or would like to discuss any rules please don’t hesitate to contact me. ROPE SKIPPING CANADA Page 13 Athlete Committee Report The first year of the RSC Athlete Committee was successful. We have a small but dedicated group of athlete representatives who discussed all things rope skipping during several live video conferences using the Google+ social network. In addition to our general discussions and idea sharing, we worked together to plan and organize the athlete social at this year's national championships. Our current Athlete Committee is: Sam Ashley (NS) Sarah Dobrowolski (NS) Kylie Matheson (ON) Laura Featherstone (ON) and Tessa Exley (BC) The Athlete Committee will continue to work together to achieve unified goals to help grow our community and improve the quality of our sport. We are seeking the input and participation of more athletes to help expand and make our committee more effective. Sam Ashley RSC Scholarship Committee Report (2012): Once again this year Rope Skipping Canada made available its annual Canadian educational scholarship in the amount of $1000. Applicants were asked to submit their application which included 2 letters of reference, their transcripts and 2 compositions answering the questions, “What has jump rope meant to me as a person?” and “How am I enhancing the sport of skipping in my province?” This year (2012) two applications were received. The applicant’s submissions were evaluated by a scholarship committee made up of representatives from five provinces. The committee then met and discussed the initial results and decided upon a set of questions to be asked of each of the applicants via a short telephone interview. Although there were a few significant technical difficulties with the teleconference set up both applicants were eventually able to verbally respond to the questions asked. The committee then discussed the responses and decided upon a winner. The winner will be officially named at the National Competition in Moncton. The Scholarship Committee would like to recognize and thank both applicants for their complete, well thought out applications and answers. Both will represent Rope Skipping Canada well in their future endeavors. Scholarship Committee Members: Jan Smith, Ontario (Chair) Carolyn Fox, Nova Scotia Esme Lanktree, Quebec Crystal Snow, Alberta Craig van Herk, BC ROPE SKIPPING CANADA Page 14 Website Report The 2011-2012 season was a big year for Rope Skipping Canada on the web. At the beginning of the season, the website underwent a major design overhaul. Unlike past websites, the new site isn't dependent on the designer adding content. Content can be added via a simple online interface, accessible anywhere, and is fast and easy. With the new design, we are now seeing a much-improved page rank on web searches. Our website occupies the first four hits on a Google search for Rope Skipping Canada. On Microsoft's Bing search engine, we occupy the top spot when searching for Rope Skipping Canada. As content continues to be added, other organizations link to our site and we start seeing more traffic, our rank will only improve. In addition to the website, we also have a Google Apps account. Google Apps is a place where we can create and share documents and create our own @ropeskippingcanada.com email addresses. Having branded email will make for more professional correspondence between the board, the public and the membership. This also allows us to remain consistent with our contact information, even when board members change. In addition to our general inquiry address, info@ropeskippingcanada.com (which comes to me), Bonnie is also using the email registrar@ropeskippingcanada.com. Rope Skipping Canada also has YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Most of our social media reach has been through Facebook (we have lots of Facebook Friends but few Twitter Followers and YouTube Subscribers), but without much content to populate the feeds, we aren't seeing much traffic. What to look for next year: One important change in the coming year will be the addition of the CanSkip program to the website. The RSC website will be the place for coaches, athletes, teachers and the general public to access the CanSkip educational materials. Videos will be hosted on YouTube and/or Vimeo channels and embedded on the site. At the moment, we have a lot of potential and now have a framework to build on. But, with all of that potential, our online impact will only be as good as the content we provide. The website and social media outlets are dependent on the membership providing content such as news, team and event information, photos and videos. That being said, It isn't good enough to simply send a bunch of photos or a link without context or a story to go along with it. The content should be prepared and submitted with a specific purpose, as if you were submitting something to a newspaper. If we all work together we can build on the foundation we've created this year, and produce a very attractive, informative and entertaining website that will be enjoyed by all. Sam Ashley ROPE SKIPPING CANADA Page 15 Sportsmanship Award Report Below were the recommendations by the Sportsmanship committee in 2011. The board reviewed the recommendations and will look to work these in by 2013 but felt we would try having the award chosen directly from the National Competition this year so all athletes have an opportunity to win this award. If it is successful the recommendation of a Junior and Senior recipient could be put into place in 2013. OVERALL COMMENTS AND SELECTION: Selection: Award is presented to Marc-Antoine Reid of Quebec. 2011 Comments: 1. Committee recommends (for future) - 2 awards by age category - junior and senior. Rationale: Recognizing it (awards at nationals) is VERY important. Sportsmanship is at the heart of sport; it feeds into volunteerism (ie: future coaches), emphasizes that sport is about developing the whole person (not just the perfection of physical ability), etc. However, there is a huge difference in maturity - junior athletes do not (it’s developmentally normal) interact across teams in the same way as senior athletes. Therefore, the criteria for a junior category would emphasize behavior when winning/losing (as per criteria used in 2011), interactions between athlete/coach, athlete/judges, athlete/teammates and a senior category would include those same criteria, but also emphasize interactions between athlete/other coaches and athlete/athletes from other teams. 2. The committee should try to avoid ties, but if absolutely necessary award them Rationale: when two athletes so obviously interact (ie: noticed by spectators, other athletes, coaches, judges), including with each other, in equal ways. Submitted by Kathi Knapik (committee chair 2011) kathi.knapik@gmail.com CRSF Records Report The 2010/2011 skipping season, starting after Nationals 2010 and ending at Nationals in 2011, produced 25 new National age group records. 9 records were set in Masters events and 16 records in team events. Three overall Canadian records were also established: • Double Unders – 428 – Jocelyn Simon – Georgian Jumpers • Single Rope Speed Relay – 344 – The Ropers – Nelson Rhythm Ropers • Single Rope Double Under Relay – 334 – Jump 3 – Jumpsations. One record that was established at the World of Jump Rope competition in Washington, DC was not recognized by the RSC board. Since this competition is now in its second year, and appears to be successful, it is recommended that the RSC board consider recognizing records established at this event. The 2011/2012 season is off to a great start with 10 age group records already established. The records set in 2010/2011 are attached as well as the current national records. Chris Mulvihill ROPE SKIPPING CANADA Page 16 PROVINCIAL REPORTS: Sackville Speeders Annual Report The Sackville Speeders is very fortunate to have recruited a new skipping coach, Lucia Neander. Lucia is a 3rd year Mount Allison University student from Nanaimo, BC. Under her guidance, our 11 skippers have worked hard this year learning new tricks and improving their strength, endurance and flexibility. This year we are co-hosting the National Championships with RSANS. Publicity for this event has led to greater exposure for our team as well as for the sport. Our local high school invited members of the Sackville Speeders to perform as part of a spirit challenge in Moncton. The skippers also performed two demonstrations and made contact with a very enthusiastic afterschool program in Riverview, NB. Some of our athletes were featured on the television program, Luc et Luc, on Radio-Canada, promoting the team and the 2012 National Competition. Two of our skippers were also featured in the local paper promoting the sport and the competition. One of our goals for next year includes supporting a parent committee to share the responsibilities for fundraising. Our limited fundraising efforts this year allowed us to pay for new uniforms, however, we are hoping to attend the 2013 National Competition and a more concerted effort in fundraising will be required to achieve this goal. A parent committee could also help in promoting awareness of our team by organizing school demonstrations in the surrounding area to help increase our membership. Some of our skippers attended a summer skipping camp in NS with the Belgian skippers courtesy of RSANS. Our athletes returned to us motivated to try out new tricks and we are hoping to attend other skipping camps in the future. We are exploring the option of providing our own rope skipping workshop to the newly discovered after school skipping group in Riverview, NB. Skill development will be a focus for skippers, parents and coaches next year. Our new skipping coach is also a gymnastics coach and we are exploring the idea of increasing our practice time to include more gymnastics in the skippers’ routines. Every year, RSANS extends an invitation to our club to compete at their provincial competition. Sackville Speeders parents and coaches are interested in attending a judging clinic in the fall in order to better support our athletes and the greater rope skipping community. The Skip-Its from the Toronto area competed for the first time at the 2012 Ontario Open. The Jump 4 Fun team in Western Region competed at Ontario Provincials. ORSO held their annual two day workshop in November hosted by the Essex Energizers with instruction provided by the Jumpin’ Allstars from Michigan USA. The workshop was attended by 75 competitive members. Elite jumpers assisted the Jumpin’ Allstars and spent a portion of the 2nd day sharing and learning skills with our American Instructors. The 2nd Annual Ontario Open (a 2 day event, replacing Central Ontario Regionals) was hosted by the Georgian Jumpers in late February and attended by 120 athletes representing 7 clubs. Western Region hosted a county-wide workshop and tournament for all the local area schools. Each of these 2 events was attended by 300 participants. The Provincial Championships were held in late March hosted by the Essex Energizers. There were 157 athletes representing 8 clubs from across Ontario. The Kelly Davidson Memorial Award is presented at the Provincial Championship to an athlete who exemplifies sportsmanship, leadership and dedication to rope skipping and their community. This year Jenna Watson was the recipient. Jenna, a 10 year member of the Brampton AcroRopers, is a role model not only to her teammates but also her peers. Her positive attitude and knack for learning from others attributes to her being a well rounded athlete and mentor. Jenna faces every challenge with determination and dedication. She freely gives up her own time to assist teammates with skills, routines and moral support. The majority of Ontario teams run recreational programs and workshops to promote the sport in their areas. Clubs will travel to other locations to run workshops or assist another team with athlete development. Coaching Development ORSO is planning a coach’s retreat in September 2012 to provide a time for sharing ideas and strategies on skill development and athlete training. The hope is to have a motivational speaker to inspire and provide our coaches with different and innovative ideas to go forward. The Becky L’Homme Memorial Award is awarded each year at the Provincial Championships to a coach who exemplifies leadership and dedication to rope skipping and their community. This year the award was presented to Sandi Kish (Hamilton Hoppers). Sandi has been involved in the sport for 17 years.
