Year: R Drama Ideas for SEAL Planning Theme: Say No to Bullying Games (can be used as part of a lesson or at other times during the week) I’m so Cross Children sit in a circle and finish the sentence “I’m so cross I could…” eg. Roar louder than a lion, shout my socks off, stamp my feet. If children do not want to speak, they could just do an action. For each sentence and action, everybody else copies. Explore Drama faces/bodies/voices for different emotions – use photos from pack as a stimulus and to support ideas Ball Game – Happy and Sad Sit in a circle – give the children a statement, eg. Playing with friends, sitting on your own etc. When the ball is rolled to them children to show on their drama face how it makes them feel, then roll the ball to someone else. Take the hat and pass it around Use a hat to pass round the circle as everyone sings “Take the hat and pass it round, pass it round, pass it round, take the hat and pass it round, who will answer?” Child should answer the question that was asked before the song. Repeat a few times with the same question. Eg. ‘ What is your favourite colour/animal/food etc. Activities (to be taught as part of anti-bullying week) Session 1 Read ‘Twoo Twit’ up to “it was true”. Discuss how the characters are feeling – what is happening – are they being kind or not? Create class Role on the Wall for the Owl (write his feelings on the inside and the things that others were doing to him/other things that were happening around the outside). Act out some of the things that others did and said – what would their voices sound like. Think about drama faces and bodies. Could all do it as a circle of testimony, imagining the owl in the middle. HIAS Healthy schools website Say no to bullying – Sarah Freeman, Wootey Infant School 1 Session 2 Recap ‘Twoo Twit’ so far. Continue reading story to “He’d never felt such a cuckoo brain before”. Work as a whole class to model still image and thought tracking for one key moment in the story. In small groups create still images for other key moments in the story – take photos and teacher scribe thoughts onto the picture. Session 3 Recap ‘Twoo Twit’ story. Discuss things that sometimes happen at school that are happy or sad/unkind. Suggest different classroom scenarios (eg. Playing with a friend in the sand or not being able to join in with the children playing in the sand) – which would they prefer to happen and why? Create Drama Gateways for classroom scenarios – one person say what would be the right thing to do that would make someone happy, other person say what would be the wrong thing to do that would make someone sad. Reinforce rewards that children will get if they choose the right thing at school and the sanctions if they choose the wrong thing to do. Session 4 Read ‘Sean and the Building Area’ story. Children to use feeling fans and drama faces during the story to show how different characters are feeling. Use LSA to model hotseating Julie. B clear about what sort of questions you could ask. Children work in pairs to practice hotseating Kaltuun – one child be Kaltuun, the other asks questions. Swap to hotseat Sean. Feed back some of the questions they asked. Session 5 Recap things that children do at school that might be right or wrong. Work in small groups to create still image of being kind/a good friend. Take photos and make into posters to display around the school reminding people about the right thing to do to other people. 2 Say no to bullying – Sarah Freeman, Wootey Infant School HIAS Healthy schools website
