Research interests include diverse fields like synthesis of natural products,
heterocycles, and novel new isocoumarins, their proposed mechanisms
Isocoumarins and Dihydroisocoumarins Isocoumarins and dihydroisocoumarins
are the secondary metabolites of a wide variety of fungi, bacteria, marine organisms,
higher plants and are also among the insects venoms and pheromones exhibiting a
wide variety of structural diversity and biological activities, including antiallergic,
immuno-modulatory, cytotoxic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic,
antitumor, anti HIV etc. Isocoumarin system is also part of antibiotics: Amicoumacin
A, B and C (antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer), baciphelacins, (antibacterial
and antiviral), kristenin (antibacterial and anti-tumor), Y-05460M-A, antibacterial,
anti-tumor and anti-ulcer and PM-94128 having antitumor activity.

Total Synthesis of a number of important natural Dihydroisocoumarins and
Isocoumarins,
Dihydrofusamarin
6-Methoxymellein, a phytoalexin, insect trail pheromone and metabolite of several
fungi; 6,8-Dimethoxy-3-undecyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarins and derivatives isolated
from plant Ononis natrix showing antibacterial, antifungal, antirheumatic and
diuretic activities; Peniolactol the antifungal metabolite of wood attacking fungus
Peniophora sanguinea, Agrimonolide from Agrimonia pilosa, Thunberginol B,
Xyridin A & B, from Xyris indica, Stellatin from Aspergillus stellatis, Homolacine
and Dihydrohomolacine isolated from the extract of the roots of Homalium
Zelanium Benth. Diastereotropy in some 3,4-dihydroisocoumarins and related
compounds as well as diastereotropy in 3,4-dihydroisocoumarins. Effect of changing
substituent on the asymmetric centre. An efficient synthesis of 3,5dimethoxyhomophthalic acid, a key intermediate for the synthesis of natural
isocoumarins has been deviced.
Amongst isocoumarins, Trans-Artemidin and Tetrahydrocappillarin synthesized in
one step and has been isolated from the roots of an octoploid strain of A-dracuniclus.
The extract from different parts of the plant is used in the form of tincture. 8-hydroxy6-methoxy-3-methylisocoumarin responsible for Pine Forest and Dutch elm diseases,
Achlisocoumarin isolated from Achylis triphylla, feralolide, the well known cathartic
and bittering agent of alcoholic agents. In addition, synthesis, crystal structure and
bioactivity of a number of new synthetic isocoumarins, their 3,4-dihydro derivatives
and their conversion into 1-thiosocoumarins & isoquinolines has been achieved.
New novel synthetic isocoumarins have been synthesized and their mechanisms have
been proposed. Molecular rearrangements in the Homoisodrin series have been
discussed and some chemical transformation of Homodrin and its epoxides are
reported.
A patent on the preparation of isocoumarin, their 3,4-dihydroderivatives and
their usages, has been published in China, Application No. 200510122353.X
(2006-06-14).
Isochromans
Synthesis of several isochromans ()-6,8-dihydroxy-3-isopropyl-7-methylisochroman intermediate towards fungal metabolite of Sclerotiorin group; medicinally
important 3-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxy-1-methylpiperazinylisochromans, new series of
1-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxyisochromans, 1-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxy-7-methylisochromans
and new type of bisisochromans has been carried out.
Nitrogen-sulfur heterocycles
Synthesis and bioactivity of several classes of medicinally and commercially
important heterocycles, bi-heterocycles e.g i) 2-Aryl/-2-hetrocylyl-1,2-dihydro-3Hindazol-3-ones ii) 3-Hetrocyclyl-1,2,3-benzotriazin-4-ones iii) 3-Aryl-7,8dimethoxy-1,2,3-benzotriazin-4-ones iv) 2-Aryl/-2-hetrocyclyl-2H-benzothiatriazn1,1-dioxides v) 2-Aryl-2,3-dihydro-1,2,3-benzothia-diazol-1,1-dioxides vi) 2-(4halophenylamino)-5-(isomericpyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazoles vii) 2,4-Dihydro-4-(4halophenyl)-5-(isomericpyridyl)-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones
