Diastereotropy in some 3,4-dihydroisocoumarins and related compounds as well as diastereotropy in 3,4-dihydroisocoumarins. Effect of changing substituent on the asymmetric centre. An efficient synthesis of 3,5dimethoxyhomophthalic acid, a key intermediate for the synthesis of natural isocoumarins has been deviced. Amongst isocoumarins, Trans-Artemidin and Tetrahydrocappillarin synthesized in one step and has been isolated from the roots of an octoploid strain of A-dracuniclus. The extract from different parts of the plant is used in the form of tincture. 8-hydroxy6-methoxy-3-methylisocoumarin responsible for Pine Forest and Dutch elm diseases, Achlisocoumarin isolated from Achylis triphylla, feralolide, the well known cathartic and bittering agent of alcoholic agents. In addition, synthesis, crystal structure and bioactivity of a number of new synthetic isocoumarins, their 3,4-dihydro derivatives and their conversion into 1-thiosocoumarins & isoquinolines has been achieved. New novel synthetic isocoumarins have been synthesized and their mechanisms have been proposed. Molecular rearrangements in the Homoisodrin series have been discussed and some chemical transformation of Homodrin and its epoxides are reported. A patent on the preparation of isocoumarin, their 3,4-dihydroderivatives and their usages, has been published in China, Application No. 200510122353.X (2006-06-14). Isochromans Synthesis of several isochromans ()-6,8-dihydroxy-3-isopropyl-7-methylisochroman intermediate towards fungal metabolite of Sclerotiorin group; medicinally important 3-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxy-1-methylpiperazinylisochromans, new series of 1-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxyisochromans, 1-alkyl-6,8-dimethoxy-7-methylisochromans and new type of bisisochromans has been carried out.
