been elected by you and both incoming and outgoing officers

are busy in preparation for the transition. Installation of the

new board will occur at the July meeting and the 2011 officers officially “take charge” on August 1.

I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support and assistance during my two years as your President. I could not have done this without you! El Sol Chapter has taken huge strides toward our future; we have increased membership; we have increased public awareness of ABWA in our local community; and we have raised money for a scholarship.

We co-hosted the District VI Conference and we are making plans to host

Round Up. We are busy ladies!

We have experienced joy and sadness together, and we have stood by each other. We have made new friends and strengthened existing bonds. We have had so much fun! I cannot tell you how proud I am of you, El Sol ladies!

Now we look to the coming year with anticipation. Join your new board, Jan

ABWA and El Sol have to offer. Get involved; it is more fun when you are involved.

THE CROWNING TOUCH

by Shelia King

EL SOL JUNE PROGRAM: NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION presented by Rozie Zwaduk

Getting people to take pride in their yards and neighborhood is difficult!

But, Rosie Zwaduk found a positive strategy. She headed up a group of volunteers from her Montera neighborhood association who drove the neighborhood and acknowledged nicely groomed yards with a sign that read “Montera Pride”. Instead of typical “threats” for not keeping yards well groomed, the positive approach proved to be a huge success. Within three years the neighbors were very competitive and many were competing to win the “Montera Pride” top position! The result was that the neighborhood improved aesthetically, the high crime rate was pushed to outlying neighborhoods where people did n’t take as much pride, and Montera property values started to rise.

Rosie is currently involved with the “Garden District Gem” project, a 4,000 home community. The program involves educating people about water harvesting and desert planting. The group has purchased and made available to the community supplies, equipment, and training. People draw on their resources to give in any way they can to make the project a success. For example, Rosie manages a self storage in the neighborhood and donated the space to store tools and supplies used by everyone participating in the project.

The best method for incorporating projects is just becoming engaged in some way with your community; once you do, the opportunities will present themselves. Adopt a roundabout or a neighborhood street that you take a few minutes a week to remove debris or pull weeds. As people catch on and join in, it will make a huge difference! Build a good name for your community, lower crime, increase property values and reap the benefits of a job well done with tax write offs for your expenses, the opportunity to meet new friends, and promote your own business in the process.

Ways to get involved include joining or starting an association, a neighborhood watch or safe house program for children. Volunteer, donate money and/or resources, create or contribute to your association’s newsletter or fundraiser. Use your creativity to find ways to participate.

“A neighborhood is not just a gathering of houses – it’s when people care about their surroundings and they are engaging with one another.” – Mira Jean Steinbrecker.

RADIATION RISKS

ABWA

CT scans, like X-rays enable doctors to see what is going inside the body, in far greater detail.

But are all those CTs and X-rays harmful?

The newer technology comes with a more powerful dose of radiation. You really need to ask questions of your physician the next time you are sent for a scan.

Cancer Related?

More than 70 million annual scans are performed in the U.S. According to a study in Archives of Internal Medicine,

29,000 future cancers could be related to scans done in 2007.

To reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from imaging test, the FDA has issued requirement that scanning devices alert users whenever a dose exceeds optimal levels.

Areas Requiring the Most Radiation:

Abdominal, pelvis, and head scans were found to require the most radiation. An abdominal scan has about the same dose of radiation as

400 chest X-rays.

CTs Do Save Lives:

Do not refuse a scan if there is a clear need. But recognize that radiation is cumulative. If your doctor schedules a scan for a non life-threatening situation, ask if an alternative test is possible.

And keep a log of all diagnostic X-rays and CTs to help you and your doctors make future decisions. source: “Parade” article by: Dr. Ranit Mishori

TRAVEL TIME –

Back to Jolly Ol England

Alicia Gonzalez

I left Tucson on April 25, 2010 with a friend. We flew to Miami Florida, stayed the night, and then departed aboard the Norwegian Sun. What a wonderful trip we had - 15 days at sea. I took advantage of all the tours on the way:

The Azores, Vigo and La Coruna Spain, Lisbon Portugal, Le Havre and Paris with lunch on the Seine River, and

Brugge Belgium. It was glorious! Great fun on the ship with numerous activities each day. and many interesting people to meet.

We arrived in Dover England on May 11. The white cliffs of Dover! Oh, what a beautiful sight.

After my friend departed back to the states, I stayed in London with my nephew for a few days and left on the train to the Northwest traveling back to Bury where I was born, near Manchester. I stayed about three weeks with my brother-in-law, and visited many friends and relatives. I always enjoy the countryside, flowers, pub lunches, great dinners, and of course the city of London.

I returned to London on June 9 and flew from Heathrow to Phoenix on June 12. The entire trip was amazing and I'm ready to go again as soon as possible.

DID YOU KNOW??

ABWA

It’s coming, and it’s coming in

This year’s recent box-office success of films in 3-D has prompted electronic manufacturers to mimic the big-screen 3-D experience.

LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and Vizio all have 3-D TVs or 3-D Bluray disc players. “There’s no question it’s coming, and it’s coming faster than HD”, says Panasonic senior vice president Bob Perry.

Stats:

The Consumer Electronic Association

(CEA) forecasts that approximately 1.1 million of the more than 37 million Tvs shipped to U.S. dealers in 2010 will be

3-D capable. By 2015, some analysts say, as many as 78 million 3-D sets may ship worldwide.

How soon these TVs will be in people’s homes is unclear: Price is a factor a 50” HD 3-D plasma is priced around $2,500, compared to $1,500 for a similarly sized standard HD.

3-D programming is expensive and difficult to produce

– so a rich library of content is years away.

A recent CEA study confirms that there is a market for 3-D – 65% of American adults who’ve seen a 3-D movie, want the technology in their homes.

.

Glasses, Technology and What’s On:

To view anything in 3D, you’ll need special battery-powered glasses. You get only one pair of glasses per TV.

Additional pairs cost around $150 and are not compatible across brands.

These “active” glasses are a generation ahead of the polarized versions you get at the theaters, and light years ahead of the cardboard with blue and red cellophane. The glasses have tiny electronic shutters that open and close in sync with the TV.

Several manufacturers are working on

“autostereoscopic” sets that will not require glasses, but that technology also has limits: Viewers will have to sit in “sweet spots” to see the screen.

Perhaps the biggest concern is the question, “What’s on?” Currently, not much. ESPN’s 3-D network will premiere with soccer, the FIFA World

Cup, and will carry 85 live events in its first year. DirectTV plans to debut three

3-D channels sponsored by Panasonic.

Discovery Communications, Sony, and

IMAX will launch a 2011 3-D service.

Movies and Quality:

Picture quality of the new 3-D TVs is amazing, certainly a step above the current HDTVs. Tiny ocean fish seem to swim and swerve outside the screen just beyond arm’s reach. Cartoons such as

Pixar’s Oscar-winning Up appear ultrareal.

3-D Blu-ray movies will be available prior to 2011. To enjoy those movies, you will need to purchase a 3-D Blu-ray player in addition to a new TV.

And some consumers already have “TVupgrade fatigue.” Many people have only just recently invested in HDTVs. Are they, or you, really prepared to buy new models again so soon?

Bt if you are in the market for a TV and have extra cash to spend, consider 3-D.

For the additional cost, you get a gorgeous HD picture, plus 3-D capability. source Parade Magazine
