Create a timeline – Pick at least 12 significant incidents in the book. Make a timeline on paper larger than a piece of computer paper with the incidents and a two-sentence explanation of why they are significant. On the timeline, put positive incidents toward the top and negative incidents toward the bottom. 2. Cartoon – Draw a cartoon/comic strip of one of your favorite scenes from the novel. The drawing must include at least 4 panels. You must have a paragraph of at least 5 sentences explaining what’s going on in the drawing. In a separate paragraph of at least 5 sentences, explain why you chose this particular scene in the book. 3. “Found” Song - Do some research on the music and poetry referenced in the book and choose songs and poems by those artists and authors. From the songs and poems, pick lyrics and combine them to form a “found song” that addresses key ideas in the book. Your song should include at least 10 selections of lyrics, of which at least 5 should be written by artists or authors mentioned in the novel. You may include your own lyrics as well. Write two paragraphs (each of at least 5 sentences) that explains why you chose the lyrics that you did and how it relates to the novel. 4. Mapping the Movement and Graphing the Gangs – On a map (that you find or create) show the path and measured distance from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Manhatten, Kansas. Be creative and use visuals! Calculate how long it would take to make the trip if you (1) drove a car (estimate the speed) and (2) took a train (do some research to find the average speed of a freight train!) Then, research some statistics and information on gangs in Oklahoma and make a graph detailing significant information (growth rates, details about members, etc.) Write a paragraph of at least 5 sentences that explains your graph and why you thought the information was significant. 5. Stop the Violence! – Reflecting on all of the gang-related violence in the book, create a plan to present at the town hall meeting that will offer suggestions to stop the violence among teenagers. Address issues such as bullying, abuse, gangs, etc. Create one visual propaganda for your plan and write an essay or script that details your plan. The essay or script should be at least one typed page. You will need to do some research so that you can present statistics at the meeting! Present the problem, offer a solution (consider researching community organizations that can help), and tell them how it will be done! 6. Role Reversal – Choose one of the chapters to re-write from the perspective of a Soc. You do not need to write everything word for word from the novel, but instead you will look at the main ideas from the chapter and then think about them from the perspective of a Soc. How might their though processes be different? Would the events have changed? Your re-write should be 1½ to 2 typed pages. Write one paragraph of at least 5 sentences that explains why you made the changes that you did. 7. Greaser Family Celebration Poster – Create a poster that celebrates the Greaser family. Be sure to include all the main Greasers! Include a photo (digital or hand-drawn) for each family member as well as 3 visuals (pictures, words, etc.) that describe that person. On the back, write a paragraph of 5 – 7 sentences that explains the role that the Greasers played in one another’s lives; describe the bond within the “family.” 8. 3-D Model – Create a 3-D model of one of your favorite scenes or characters from the novel. The model must be 3-D and larger than a piece of computer paper. The model can be made with any sort of material that you choose, but should be very detailed. You must write a paragraph of at least 5 sentences explaining what’s going on in the model or on the character. In a separate paragraph of at least 5 sentences, explain why you chose this particular scene in the book or character from the book. © 2007 Pieces of Learning CLC0335 Successful Teaching in the Differentiated Classroom www.piecesoflearning.com
