AP/IB English 4th Quarter Tentative (student) Syllabus Hove/ Van (space) Norman March 24: No School- Teacher Work Day March 25: (1-6) Tuesday Learning Goal: R7: 2 11th -12th Students will integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different formats as well as evaluate the words in order to address the question or prompt. New Syllabus and Seating Charts Discuss new weekly AP writing policy: Put name on your folder- same folder we have been using Starting tomorrow (every block day) There will approximately three choices of timed writings on the table as you walk in. When the bell rings, each row will come up and you will choose ONE timed writing, It will ALWAYS be due on MONDAY unless it is a holiday. All writings will be put into your folder. You will receive credit for both that we do that wee; but one will be graded for ALL the elements and that exact grade will go into the grade book each week. The other one will simply be credit, but it will be full credit if it is completed and written to the best of your ability. During the five weeks, you will practice two multiple-choice tests, too. Requirements for Turn in of Weekly Essays: 1) One exam is due every Monday and must be placed in the folder, ON TOP. You must staple a score sheet to the top. 2) The other exam is done on the block day in class. You must make it up immediately if you are not in class on Block Days. You may get it early if needed. This one will also stay in the writing folder. 3) All exams are handwritten. There is NO TYPING. If I cannot read it, then you will rewrite it until I can. 4) All exams must be color marked according to the IB rubric./AP Score, too 5) You may use your three essays you took on February 24- practice AP Test Day for three of these Monday essays. Please let me know by the end of the week. You are also to attend at least two tutoring sessions before the AP Language Exam on May 1. Please respect my office hours: One of these sessions may be used to go over the answers to the multiple-choice questions from February 24th’s test. Mondays after school 2:15- 3:15 in my office Tuesday- Thursday- lunch in my room By appointment. Journal Assignment for Cry, Beloved: Due Monday, April 21 You will keep a running journal, starting today showing how the land is used as a main character in this novel. This can be written in first person. Entries can be shorter than our usual requirements, and they may hand written. This is due at the end of our study at the end of April. You can be creative and make a cover for your journal. Make sure it holds some significance to the story. Go to Library to get novels Assign Apartheid short story groups. Absent students: If you are absent, do the research on # 5 and then join group #5 upon returning to my class tomorrow or Thursday. We will then go to the lab tomorrow and start our Apartheid research. LAB # Apartheid groups: Groups of (2) students and multiple students assigned to each topic. (1) Abuse in medical experiments with black men/women and African Americans. One example is Tuskegee. (2) Beyond the Apartheid: What has changed and what is still going on in South Africa since the Apartheid? (3) The History of Education under the Apartheid 1948-1994. (4) How does the story and history of South African music influence the country? (5) How did the Jim Crow laws in 1876- 1965 influence black Americans? (6) How was Things Fall Apart accepted in South Africa- or was it? What were some of the common criticisms? (7) How have women’s roles changed since the Apartheid in 1994? You will work together on your research, and use at least 3 sources to develop your group’s short story. The group will then design a 750-1000 word short story explaining your topic through your short story. Your creative and historical story will somehow answer your assigned question. It will include all the significant parts/elements of a story such as plot, theme, conflict, setting, characterization, solution, and climax. This assignment is due on Tuesday. Please make sure all participants’ names are on the essay. After you have completed the story, you will actually take a highlighter marker and highlight the research and facts included in your story. Make sure to also include a Works-Cited page. Last 15 minutes: Get together with your partner for this assignment: Make three columns on your paper: Column 1: Write everything you know about the Apartheid Column 2: compare this topic to the Great Depression Last column: What do you want to know about the Apartheid? On the back of the paper, brainstorm topics and information for tomorrow March 26: Block Day/ March 27:: In Lab today to gather research for Apartheid short story and write the short story. Read and annotate (it is under the 11th grade IB section of the website) we will be continuing this study in class next week… Learning Goal: RI. 6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is effective in analyzing how style contributes to the persuasiveness of the text. Friday, April 4: Half of the students will read an excerpt from “ Gettysburg Address” While the other half of the class will read an excerpt from “ I Have a Dream” All students will fill out a Précis (found on my website) while reading. If you are absent, get onto the computer and find an excerpt for either one of these works. Download at least 4-5 pages of this. Get together with writing partner and find (5) different places in the novel where the structuralism theory was used for an interpretation. For example: The description of the beautiful green highlands and desolate hillside below establishes an instead contrast between the conditions for wealth and the poor natives. This land has been eroded by the separate and unequal treatment of the natives. Analyze the impact these words have on the tone. Using those 13 terms, find one example of each of the terms. Write down the quote or part of the quote using ellipsis to show that particular terms. I should be able to read your examples, and completely understand the meaning and see the quote as an example of this literary terms. Allusion: reference to something literary, mythological, biblical and/or historical used in the literature piece clearly enough that it can be assumed the reader, with his prior knowledge, can understand what it is being alluded to. Anaphora: Repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of consecutive sentences. Antithesis Statement which two opposing ideas are balanced Asyndeton elements are presented in a serious, but without use of conjunctions. Colloquialism: informal words or expressions not usually going to be accepted in a formal piece of writing or a speech. Connotation: Implied or association of a word Hubris: Excessive pride or arrogance that results in the downfall of the protagonist Motif: standard themes, elements, or dramatic situations that recur in other works as well. Juxtaposition Two elements side-by-side to present a comparison Parallelism: corresponding grammatical or syntactical forms in a sentence Syntax: the arrangement of words or of sentences in your writing Polysyndeton: The use of more conjunctions than necessary or even more than what would seem natural. Solecism: nonstandard grammatical usage or violation of grammatical rules Activity: Activity: Practicing the Structuralist Philosophy: With your writing partner, find 4-5 examples showing the use of this philosophy being used. Write those resources down. 4) Identify what you will use from each resource 5) Identify what you will use for your (+ 1 source) the graph or picture. This is the one that is required for you to use in your essay. 6) Write a rough-draft thesis statement. Be sure to include your position. 7) Make sure the sources DO NOT DRIVE your essay. Your prior knowledge is what is to DRIVE this essay, so write down all your prior knowledge of this particular DBQ question.
