 Understand the differences between the purpose of tort law and the purpose of
criminal law
 Understand the types of intentional torts and be able to identify/explain examples
 Understand the criteria for being found negligent and be able to identify/explain
examples
 Understand the types of damages the courts can award: Economic (directly
quantifiable like actual doctor bills, lost wages, etc) Non-economic (not directly
quantifiable like being compensated for emotional distress, loss of
companionship) and Punitive Damages (monetary punishment imposed to set an
example so that situation does not happen again)
 Understand the difference between comparative and contributory negligence.
Understand how the court may award damages in these circumstances.
 Understand the concept of product liability and who can be held responsible
 Understand the types of intellectual property and their function/area of protection.
