Orchard Park Secondary School English Department Culminating Task Course: Theme: ENG3U – English, University Preparation “The Struggle for Power” Your Task Each student will create a multi-dimensional project answering the following question: “Is a well-ordered society crucial to a smoothly-running world? If yes, when (if ever) should the order be disrupted? At what cost should it be protected? If not, what is crucial to a smoothly running world?” You must use three of the four strands (Reading, Writing, Oral and Media). This inquiry-based assignment is meant to allow you to explore these strands with a focus on your personal strengths. Please speak with your teacher to help you to develop your ideas and to guide the direction of this project. Some suggestions for what you can do: For the reading component: Find articles, stories, essays on your topic (roughly 50 pages’ worth) and write summary/reflections on the information you have read For the writing component: Write an essay or report of roughly 800 words. Be sure to cite all sources used, and do adequate research. Write a script of a dramatic scene relating to your topic Write a series of journals (totaling roughly 800-1000 words) on your topic Create a poetry collection stemming from ideas found in the topic (you will need to demonstrate adequate understanding of poetic forms and conventions) For the oral component (these will have to be pre-recorded as there isn’t class time for them) Do a presentation (of roughly five minutes) Make a podcast (five minutes) Do a dramatic reading For the media component Film a scene relating to your topic (five minutes) Design a poster to generate understanding of your topic (aesthetics are incredibly important here) Compose and record a song relating to your topic Evaluation Weight This assignment is worth 10% of your final mark. This assignment will be graded using the attached rubric.
