Introduction: hold up a flashcard for each new word and give clues as to its meaning (ie: Tía:
this person is the sister of your mamá= your aunt!) . Have student volunteers guess what each
word might mean.
Familia chant: Have students rhythmically chant through the words in unison (Familia,
familia, is your family, is your family. Mama/mama is your mom/is your mom) Have them
clap in rhythm and encourage Shoulder Dancing.

Ask if anyone has any questions or observations about the words on the board. Encourage

Crazy Nouns: explain that in Spanish you CANNOT TRUST THE NOUNS!!! Sometimes
they’ll masculine but they’ll end in A! And vice versa! So watch out for those Crazy Nouns!

making an illustration, labeling each picture in Spanish and in English and writing a sentence
in English about that family member.

Introduction: using your Word Chart and all familia and adjective vocabulary on word strips,
put the Sentence of the Day up on the chart: Mi mamá es guapa. Have students try to translate
it. Give clues about what guapa means (ie: you could say this about your mom if she was
getting ready for a party and she had her hair done, her nails done, her cutest dress on, etc.)
Repeat the process for each new adjective (ie: Mi primo es alto. Mi abuela es baja)
Ask if anyone has any questions or observations about the adjectives that we have learned
about today. Guide students to noticing that if the noun in the sentence is masculine, the
adjective ends in “O” and that if the noun in the sentence is feminine, the adjective ends in
“A”. Have students Repeat After Me and say the Adjective Chant with you:

Divide students into teams of four. Give each team a set of Word Strips: the word “mi”, the
word “es”, one family noun and two adjectives—one that ends in “O” and one that ends in
“A”. Have the students create a sentence using the words and hang them up on the Word
Chart.
Have the class read each sentence in unison and correct any mistakes re: masculine and
feminine nouns and corresponding adjectives.
V= students work well in group, create a correct sentence
M= students argue and do not work well but create a correct sentence
N= students create an incorrect sentence
