May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 1
Graduate Survey
For the Class of May and August 2009
363 students completed the May/August 2009 graduate survey. The survey was given as
part of the exit process for graduation. The second round of the survey was distributed to the
same students in November 2009, 6 months after graduation. 56 of the students completed the
second round of the survey.
Gender and Ethnicity
During the first round of the survey, 68% of the respondents were female and 32% were
male. At the time of the second survey, 62% were male and 38% were female. This first round is
most representative of the ratio of males and females in the CBU population.
Respondents were asked to select their ethnicity and were encouraged to select all that
apply. The majority of respondents reported a Caucasian/White background (274), followed by
those who indicated a Hispanic or Latino heritage (54), and finally African American/blacks
comprised the third largest group. The participants who responded in round 2 had similar
ratios. The largest group was Caucasian/White (77%) followed by the second largest group, the
Hispanic/Latino population (18%).
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 2
Undergraduate Field of Study: The decision process and academic success
Respondents were asked to select their undergraduate field of study. Survey
respondents represented most of CBU’s academic major categories. The largest groups were
business administration, liberal studies, nursing, kinesiology, psychology, and English.
Engineering is a new major and therefore has not yet had a graduating class.
When asked about the number of times students had changed their declared majors
54% had never changed their major. 30% had changed it one time and 12 % had changed it
twice.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 3
The majority of respondents (79%) reported a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher.
This demonstrates the outstanding academic achievement of CBU graduates. See
appendix for the GPA of round 2 participants.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 4
Most respondents had decided on their career path or educational goal before
college (35%). However, of critical importance for the Career Services Center is the
larger group that decided as a freshman or sophomore (36%). Our current programming
allows for students to explore their career options through strengths counseling, online
career assessments, and through one-on-one career consultations with staff members.
Undergraduate work experience and their benefits
Participants were asked to identify the practical experiences during college that best
helped to prepare them for their careers. The majority of respondents reported that part-time
seasonal jobs and volunteer activities were most helpful. Internships were also marked as
helpful practical experiences. Of those who selected “other” some of the most common
responses were International Service Projects, observation hours, choir, church involvement
and ministry, and athletic involvement. See appendix for a complete list of these experiences.
Students were asked to list all of the on campus, and off campus jobs they had while attending
CBU. See appendix for a complete list.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 5
Students were asked to specify in what way these experiences were helpful. The
majority of students indicated that these experiences helped them gain skills and experience to
gain a job. Additionally, these experiences helped students gain confidence in their chosen
field, and assisted them in deciding on career goals.
Graduate Employment
When asked to report their current primary activities, students were encouraged to
select as many as were applicable. The majority of respondents (52%) in the first round of the
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 6
survey reported that their primary activity was education; this inflation is likely because the
survey is taken before graduation. By the time of the second survey, this had dropped 13%. It is
also interesting to note, that at the time of the first survey, only 7% were employed full-time,
but at the time of the second survey this number had risen to 36%. In the graph below series 1
represents round 1 results, and series 2 represents round 2. These results are displayed in
terms of percentages, not raw numbers so that a more accurate comparison can be made.
Students were asked to indicate when they obtained their first, post-graduate job. The
graph below represents the response of the participants at 6 months after graduation. The
largest group (39%) obtained their first job within 3 months of graduation, and only 10% were
still seeking employment 6 months after graduation! See appendix for a complete list of the
graduates’ employers.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 7
Participants were asked to provide their annual income or salary. The results are shown
below. This is representative of the percent of respondents who selected each category.
Students were asked to identify the relationship to their current job. This graph is based
on percentage of students who made each selection to get a better comparison. The graph
indicates that students are gradually moving from temporary jobs, to jobs within their fields
which will offer experiences, and possibly turn their into career goal. This graph is not
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 8
necessarily an actual depiction of how our alumni are doing, due to the low number of students
who participated in the second round of the survey.
Respondents were asked to indicate how useful their degree was in obtaining their
current positions. Students are moving into jobs where their degrees were helpful, and even
required. Over time the usefulness of their specific degree in their current job will probably
increase; however because the survey is only given 6 months after graduation, we expect that
many students are still in entry level positions.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 9
Participants were also asked to identify the field that best represents their primary
employer. Most students were in the business/industry field, followed by working for an
educational institution.
Plans for Future Education
At the time of graduation, 42% of respondents said they would be enrolled in a graduate
or credentialing program within the next year. 6 months later, 75% of respondents said they
currently were, or would be within the next 5 years, enrolled in a graduate or credentialing
program. This may indicate that as students are entering the workforce, they are realizing the
value of continuing their education.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 10
At the time of graduation participants were asked to select the degrees they would be
pursuing within the next year. The results are displayed in the graph below.
Participants were also given an opportunity to indicate the degrees they planned on
pursuing within the next five years. The results demonstrate that the majority of our students
(60%) plan to eventually obtain at least a Master’s degree.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 11
Students were then asked to indicate what would be their primary field of study in their
future education. The majority of students indicated a desire to pursue further training in
education, nursing, or business.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 12
Use of Career Services
Participants were asked to indicate which career services tools were helpful to them in
their search for employment. The online job board was the most beneficial, followed by career
fairs. This is exciting news for the Career Services office as they are moving towards creating
several discipline specific career fairs in order to better serve the students, and the recruiters
attending the events. Finally, internships, networking, and other online job listings were at the
top of the charts as well.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 13
Students were also asked to rate the helpfulness of the Career Services Center. The
results are displayed in the graph below. 64% of students rated the Career Services Center as
either helpful, or very helpful.
Those who did not use the Career Services Center were asked to indicate why they did
not use it. Most of them said it was because they felt that they did not need career/job
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 14
assistance. Only 8 students, out of 211 did not know the Career Services Center existed. These
results demonstrate that the Career Services Staff has been successful in marketing their
resources and opportunities to the traditional undergraduate population of students.
Finally, respondents were asked to write what would have made their transition from
CBU to their first job or next educational program easier. See appendix for a complete list of the
results.
Students were asked to specify what would have made their transition from CBU to
their first job or educational program easier. The results were as follows:
1. More discipline specific job ideas for post graduate Bachelor’s level work
2. Better communication for upcoming events at CBU
3. CBU offered plenty of help and career fairs and what not, so it is the individuals’
fault if they didn't take advantage of all the resources.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 15
4. I don't know. I was planning on being a journeyman right after graduation, but
then they put a hold on applicants, and I had to move back home, and then had
to find a job. So I wasn't really worried about finding a job while I was at CBU... If
I knew then what I know now, I would have taken more of an advantage of CBU's
job board.
5. I am still in the process of obtaining another degree and credential. I know that
CBU will help with student teaching and preparing me to be a highly qualified
teacher.
6. Internships for mathematics/engineering programs
7. I think the transition is especially hard this year because of the economy. Most
employers are not hiring.
8. Unsure
9. There was not a lot of advice on testing required for graduate school, more
would have been helpful
10. Requirement for field experience (clinical internships). I know at CBU there is an
option for internship, but it is not required. Many other schools require
internships, but it would improve the outlook on the school, especially on the
business program if internships are required.
11. More clinical experience
12. Better economy!
13. More opportunities to learn how to pay off loans and how the system works.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 16
14. I don't know if there was anything you could do that would have made it easier
for me. My problem is that I don't have enough confidence to go out there and
sell myself. I thought finding a nursing job would be relatively easy because of all
the need, but it hasn't been.
15. Everything was helpful.
16. Not sure. I didn't really pursue the area that I studied.
17. More internship opportunities
18. More real world experience
19. Nothing, listed 8 times
20. Job placement
21. Having someone within my department equipped with knowledge and
information on where/how to look for work.
22. Better contacts and career information (career fairs, job board, etc) for technical
majors available at CBU.
23. I think more emphasis on internships and their importance.
24. My transition would have been easier without a family crisis. It was unrelated to
CBU's educational program.
25. If I signed up with a company during school and was able to obtain work with
them when I graduated.
26. Give tips on how to survive this recession.
27. A little more awareness of job postings.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 17
28. It would have been nice if I had gotten a degree that is more useful at the
Bachelor's Degree level.
29. Perhaps having some mock interviews with staff.
30. Getting more counseling on possible job opportunities at the Career Center and
networking more.
31. I have no complaints.
32. I think that my transition from CBU to my first job was easy, and I don't think
there is any need to make it easier.
33. How to dumb down your resume if needed.
34. More experience in the real business world
35. Being pushed to start applying before graduation
36. More in-class firm visits and contacts
37. I really liked the requirement of a resume before graduation. I especially
appreciated the feedback on my resume from CBU staff. Staff also went out of
their way to create a specific nursing career fair which we really appreciated. The
only improvement I can think to suggest would be to offer employers at job fairs
that aren't necessarily considered "local." Some students aren't from the
Riverside area, and others still may consider moving for a job. Thanks CBU!
38. I would have liked a few more seminars on how to prepare for job interviews.
39. If they posted more jobs from the community
40. A student teaching program or a class that went through teaching math. But
overall, I felt very prepared.
May & August 2009 Graduate Survey 18
41. Better guidance into getting a job.
42. More practical training
43. If I would have taken advantage of career counseling...
44. If there were paid internships available through CBU so to gain experience. If
CBU offered internships or externships for the different majors so the students
can obtain employment and experience. Many places will not hire because I
have no previous experience even though I barely graduated and with a degree.
45. Duncan Simcoe telling art students how we are on our own before and after we
leave.
46. It would have been easier if more information was given about the job world by
professors.
47. Not moving out of state
48. Nothing. It has been a good transition. I will want help finding a job when I
return to Riverside though, and I hope CBU will be able to help!
49. Knowing the pre-requisites to other schools that provide extended education, or
preparation for extended education in general. I think that CBU tragically fails in
providing opportunities for students to succeed once they obtain their degree,
they don't prepare you for what's to come or what schools outside of CBU would
be helpful for specific programs and they don't tell you common things you
should know if you are to enter certain schools like certain pre-requisites that
most programs demand.
