Lighthouse Academy 2010-2011
The Muslim American Society (MAS) of Tampa is pleased to open registration for the Lighthouse
Academy. Our goal is to develop—through a comprehensive program—Muslim youth who are proud
of being Muslim; who know their potential, and know their history and their role for shaping the
future; who will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to reach their own God-given
potential; and who will act as agents of change to serve humanity and be exemplary faithful citizens.
As we start our second year we will be accepting boys in grades 6-9, and girls in grades 6-8. The
Academy will run for 5 hours every Saturday. The first semester will commence on September 25th,
2010, and will continue through December 18th, 2010.
The program aims to facilitate comprehensive growth of our youth. It will include:
1- Arabic: This year, heightened emphasis will be placed on developing ability to read the Quran, as
well as understanding the Arabic language as it relates to Quran. We will use the “Annuraniyya
Method” for teaching reading skills, supplemented by Arabic worksheets—all of which will
accommodate various skill levels.
2- Quran: Focus will be centered on understanding of major themes, with light memorization. We will
go through preselected verses of Quran (rather than going in sequential order). The goal is to provide a
constant and direct link to the Quran throughout the entirety of the program.
3- Islamic Studies: Will be taught through Quran (i.e. by expounding upon the themes/messages of
certain passages).
4- Sports: A variety of sports depending on the majority preference (primarily basketball and soccer
for boys; basketball and volleyball for girls).
5- Skills: Targeted activities to help our youth develop teamwork concepts, leadership qualities and
skills. Service and Citizenship activities will be implemented as well.
Arabic and Islamic Studies will be taught by qualified and knowledgeable teachers who have
experience in teaching their respective subjects, and who are able to engage the youth and pass on the
knowledge effectively.
For the youth it is not only educational to be enrolled in the MAS Youth Lighthouse Academy, it is
also FUN. A comprehensive program is not an easy task, but Alhamdulillah it is now a reality. The
academy for the 2010-2011 year is now open for registration, but is limited to the first 60 youth. From
our experience with the Quran Summer Camp that number can be reached easily, so make sure to get

Application:
An application by the parents and the youth will be required. Once application documents are
complete, and payment has been remitted, the application will be reviewed by the admissions
committee. An interview will be conducted as a part of the application process. Once a student is
accepted, a full semester’s payment will be needed. Enrollment is not final until full payment is
received.
Fee:
Application Fee: $30 non-refundable application fee. Fee will be refunded only if the admissions
committee declines the application.
Books and materials: $50 for the Islamic studies and Arabic materials.
Early registration fee is $250 per semester. After September 4th it is $280. Fee does not include outside
activities or above materials/application fees.
Interview:
The interview is an essential part of the enrollment process. Both parents and the youth will be
interviewed separately. Parents will need to fill out a questionnaire to give us a better idea about the
strengths and learning abilities of their child. Parents are encouraged to convince their child to come
and learn. We will not accept a child if he or she does not want to come to our program.
Semesters:
Fall Semester: September 25th – Dec 18th
Spring Semester: Jan 8th – May 14th
The academy will be off for Eid, Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks, Youth camp weekend,
MYathlon day, and during MAS Tampa’s Annual Conference.
Place and Time:
Educational meetings will be at Islamic Community of Tampa Bay (ICT Masjid), weekly on Saturdays
from 10:30am-3:30pm.
Parents’ Participation:
 Parents are responsible for transportation for the sports league and the outdoor activities.
Parents are free to arrange car pooling. Pick up will be from the Temple Terrace Recreation
Center.
 Parents will be asked to volunteer during lunch time according to the volunteer schedule.
