Welcome to Español 101! This course is designed for students who have little or no knowledge of the Spanish language. In this course, we will focus on the basic skills important to communication including listening, speaking, writing, and reading. More specifically, we will emphasize the importance of oral communication. The aim of this class is for the student to develop a better knowledge of the Spanish language and culture, and communicative competence in Spanish. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to communicate many ideas in Spanish in grammatically correct, complete sentences and you will be able to understand some basic spoken Spanish in a variety of contexts. Text: Dicho y hecho, 9e. Book and Wiley Plus code, Workbook. Wiley, 2012. Material to be covered: Chapters 1-4 (Text and workbook). Evaluation: Your final grade will consist of the following: Four Unit Tests: On-Line Activities and Quizzes: Four Writing Assignments: Final Oral Exam: 40% 20% 20% 20% Unit Tests: (40%) Sections on tests will closely resemble Activities Manual/On-Line Activities and class work exercises. The best way to prepare for tests is to carefully do your assignments and review your class notes. Additionally, you will be provided with a test bank of questions prior to each exam. There will be no make-ups under any circumstances. On-Line Activities and Quizzes: (20%) You will be responsible for completing all of the assigned on-line activities for Dicho y hecho found at WileyPlus.com. These activities include InText activities (credit for completion) and Self Quizzes (graded). Doing these activities will help you prepare for tests. You must complete all activities by 9:00 am on the day they are due. If all activities are not completed by the assigned date, credit is given with a 50% grade reduction up to one week after the original due date. Four Writing Assignments: (20%) On the last page of each chapter in your text (Chapter 1 (p. 31), Chapter 2 (p. 65), Chapter 3 (p. 99), and Chapter 4 (p 139), you will find a section called “General Review”, with questions covering the material learned in each chapter. You will type the questions and your answers on a separate sheet of paper and turn them in to your instructor on the days indicated on the course calendar. Please make sure your answers are given in complete sentences, that you take special care to include accent marks when necessary, and that you do not use vocabulary or grammar not covered in class. Each answered question will be graded based on the criteria provided in the attached rubric. Writing Assignments will be accepted with a 50% grade reduction only up to one week after the original due date. 1 Final Oral Exam: (20%) You will have a final oral exam on the days designated on the course calendar. You should be prepared to answer the “General Review” questions found on page 31, page 65, page 99 and page 139 of your text. You may not read your answers to me, but instead must understand the question and answer it in a complete, Spanish sentence from memory. More instructions for your oral will be given as the time approaches. Each answered question will be graded based on the criteria provided in the attached rubric. There will be no make-ups for your Final Oral Exam. Students with perfect attendance (that is, that do not miss any part of any class) will be exempt from taking the final oral exam and receive an automatic 100% on it. Useful Hints: While you may not receive a participation grade every week, your success is hinged upon the quality and quantity of your class participation, as well as the amount of your preparation at home. Good class participation is an opportunity for you to practice new grammar and vocabulary. Being on time and prepared, speaking your target language as much as possible, participating actively by answering and asking questions, working well in pairs or small groups, taking initiative and being willing to take risks, showing respect towards the other students and being generally enthusiastic will contribute to your success. Don’t feel silly! Use every opportunity to use what you learn and little by little it will feel more natural. Always come to class having read and reviewed the material to be covered in class that day. Always do your on-line activities manual carefully and check your answers. Be prepared to actively participate in all class activities Go over your old tests and re-do the sections that gave you most problems. Study with someone whenever possible. Try talking and thinking to yourself in Spanish. Ask questions when you don’t understand; your instructor will answer them cheerfully! (Make an appointment via e-mail!) Use the text website, or find different ones on the internet. Don’t miss class. Come see me for extra help before you fall too far behind. Have a positive attitude and an open mind. ATTENDANCE POLICY: As consistent attendance is integral to students’ success in a foreign language course, students with six hours of absence (two classes) will be dropped from this course at the end of the second missed class. Attendance will take place at the beginning of each class. Students not in attendance at that time will be marked absent. Two late arrivals or early exits will be considered one absence. Students with perfect attendance throughout the entire semester will be exempt from taking and receive a 100% on the Final Oral Exam. Letter Grades: Your grades for this class will be as follows: A = (90-100) B = (80-89) C = (70-79) D = (60-69) F = (59 or below) Tutoring: Free tutoring is available in the Central Learning Lab (B1-28). The lab is open six days a week at various times. Please contact them directly at 215.751-8480 for hours. Make appointments early. I am also available for extra help! 2 Make-ups/Late Work: There will be no make-ups without prior consultation with the instructor. Late work may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor and will result in a grade reduction. Students with Disabilities: Students who are registered with the Center on Disability must inform the instructor by the end of the first week of classes if special accommodations are requested. Academic Integrity: Plagiarizing of any kind is not tolerated. In addition, using Free Translation services is cheating. While use of online dictionaries and translation of specific phrases is acceptable, a general translation from English to your target language will result in a failing grade as well as appropriate disciplinary action. If you are seen cheating in any form, you will receive a zero grade for that assignment and further disciplinary action may be taken. Accents, etc.: In order to accurately write in Spanish, a variety of accents are needed. These may be inserted manually in Microsoft Word by using the Insert and Symbol options and then selecting the appropriate accented letter. Also, when writing longer papers, it may be helpful to go to Tools and Language and then selecting Set Language. You should select the option for Spanish Spain Modern Sort to ensure accuracy. If you check the box Automatically Detect Language, when you begin to write in Spanish, the computer will automatically detect errors in that language. Accent Shortcuts: You may also use the following combination of keys to type accented letters! ALT + 130 = é ALT + 160 = á ALT + 161 = í ALT + 162 = ó ALT + 163 = ú ALT + 164 = ñ ALT + 168 = ¿ ALT + 173 = ¡ Reminders: 1. Only students registered in the class may attend. Please do not bring children or visitors to the class. 2. Anyone engaging in disruptive behavior will be asked to leave. 3. All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off/silenced before class begins. 4. This syllabus is subject to change. Please network with your classmates so that in the event of illness or other problems which may occur, you are able to keep up with these changes. 5.
