Teaching Process
1. Introduce and explain these words to the students: clip, character, body and facial
expression and verbal expression.
2. Build up students’ background understanding of the film ‘Forest Gump’. Say:
Who has watched the film? What is the name of it? Who is the main character? Is
he smart? What is on his legs? Why does he wear leg braces? Divide the class into
half. One half (Group A) will see the clip ‘Baby Love’ without sound, and
Cantonese subtitle masked. The other half (Group B) will read WS1-Film. After
viewing, each group B students have to find a group A partner. Ask him as many
questions as he can, and write down all the necessary information. The time
limit is five minutes and the pair gets the most information will win a prize.
3. Encourage students to talk more about the movie clip including the setting, main
characters, problems, events, climax and ending. Explain the usual plot of a
story. Use the diagram at the bottom of WS2-Film to explain the plot. Tell students
to make notes in WS2-Film. Teachers check students’ answers in class.
4. Train students to listen attentively. Play clip again without sound and subtitles
masked. Ask students to prepare the dialogue in English. Ask weaker students to
do dialogue gap filling. Play clip with sound and tapescript. Ask students to follow
the tapescript. Then compare their version with the film.

Getting the picture of the film
Work in pairs.
Student A: Look at the screen. Your partner will ask you questions about what you can
see. Don’t speak unless you are asked a question.
Student B: Turn away from the screen. Be ready to make notes. You should ask your
partner questions so that you can try to find out what sort of place he is looking at.

The bus driver opens the door and looks down. Forrest walks to the steps of the bus
and looks at the bus driver. She is smoking a cigarette.
Bus Driver: Are you _________________?
Forrest: Momma said not to be taking rides from strangers.
Bus Driver: This is the bus to school.

Forrest looks around. A larger girl slides over so Forrest can't sit next to her. She
shakes her head. Forrest looks to the other side where a boy sits alone on a larger seat.
They boy glares up at Forrest.
Boy #3: _______________________.
Young Forrest is still standing in the aisle on the bus.

You know, it's funny what a young man recollects. 'Cause I don't remember being

EXT. SAVANNAH/BUS BENCH - DAY
Forrest continues talking as he sits on the bus bench.
FORREST (V.O.)
I, I... don't recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don't know when I went on
my first outdoor picnic. But, I do remember the first time I heard the sweetiest voice...
INT. BUS - MORNING (1954)
Young Forrest is still standing in the aisle on the bus.

FORREST (V.O.)
...in the wide world.
Girl: You can sit here if you want.
Forrest looks back at JENNY CURRAN, a young girl about Forrest's age.
FORREST (V.O.)
I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life. She was like an angel.
Jenny: Well, are you gonna sit down, or aren't ya?
Forrest sits down next to Jenny.
Jenny: What's wrong with your legs?
Forrest: Um, nothing at all, thank you. My legs are just fine and dandy.
FORREST (V.O.)
I just sat next to her on that bus and had conversation all the way to school.
Jenny: Then why do you have those shoes on?
Forrest: My momma said my back's crooked like a question mark. These are going to
make me as straight as an arrow. They're my magic shoes
FORREST (V.O.)
And next to Momma, no one ever talked to me or asked me questions.
Jenny: Are you stupid or something.
Forrest: Mommy says stupid is as stupid does.
Jenny puts her hand out toward Forrest. Forrest reaches over and shakes her hand.
Jenny: I'm Jenny.
Forrest: I'm Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump.
FORREST (V.O.)
From that day on, we was always together. Jenny and me was like peas and carrots.
