MARKET
Vauxhall is set to tighten its already strong grip on the MPV segment with the all-new Zafira
Tourer. The newcomer, which will be positioned above the current Zafira in Vauxhall’s line up, will set new standards in flexibility and innovation when order banks open on November 1, prior to the car hitting UK showrooms early next year.
The all-new model builds on the chart-topping success of the well-proven Zafira, while offering improved cabin space, upgraded materials and even greater levels of innovation from the upgraded Flex7 seating arrangement.
With class-leading levels of luxury and prices starting at just £21,000 (more than £1,200 less than the Ford S-Max) the seven -seat Zafira Tourer is expected not only to attract traditional
MPV customers, but also those customers who may never have considered such a vehicle.
The Zafira Tourer combines a compelling mix of cabin flexibility with many features and technologies taken from the luxury car sector. There are multiple seating configurations, including ‘Lounge Seating’ on key models, as well as a raft of new features, such as Vauxhall’s new Front Camera system and state-of-the-art infotainment.
But what really defines the Zafira Tourer is its use of quality cabin materials, which sets new class standards. Vauxhall’s Vice President of Design, Mark Adams, has created a spacious and inviting environment for occupants, offering near-panoramic views for driver and passengers.
Now, this new model bearing the Zafira name is transformed from a utilitarian people carrier into a flexible limousine that many executive car drivers would feel comfortable living with.
Since 1999, the two iterations of the current Vauxhall Zafira have dominated the compact MPV sector in the UK. Across Europe, 2.2 million have been sold, with almost a quarter of those sales coming from the UK.
And that performance has not diminished in recent years. In 2010, the Vauxhall Zafira was top of its segment in total, fleet and retail sales in the UK with a 24.3 per cent share of the total
4
Compact MPV market after registering more than 30,000 units. The Renault Scenic had the next biggest share, though with 11,346 fewer sales than the Zafira.
This year, the Zafira is as popular as ever, commanding top slot in total and fleet sales to date.
With 14,855 sales to the end of August, Zafira sales represent 18.1 per cent of the compact
MPV market, and combined with Vauxhall’s other compact MPV, the Meriva, they account for
36.1 per cent share of the compact MPV segment.

DESIGN & EQUIPMENT
Exterior
The new Zafira Tourer epitomises Mark Adam’s design mantra perfectly, combining sculptural artistry with technical precision, as well as many design cues from the current Insignia.
Its striking face is framed by large bold boomerang lighting units which sweep from the headlights to the fog lamps and incorporate Vauxhall’s unique wing-shaped daytime running lamps. The trapezoidal grille houses the Griffin while the bonnet incorporates the distinctive crease featured on other Vauxhalls, creating a dynamic, progressive look.
‘Blade’ features – also seen on models like the Astra, Meriva and Insignia – are reinterpreted for the Zafira Tourer, creating a visual impression of forward motion. A smooth line running from the front of the roof to the rear spoiler gives the car a lower and broader appearance.
The boomerang-shaped graphic from the headlights is repeated on the tail lamps, only this time the units are more slender and the fog lamps are housed within the bumper. A horizontal bar carrying the Vauxhall logo extends into the light elements.
Interior
In the Zafira Tourer’s cabin, visibility has been improved thanks to a re-designed front layout, with slim hydroformed A-pillars, sleek B pillars, large side windows and re-positioned door mirrors (now fixed directly to the door panel). The door mirrors, which come in two-tone combinations, are topped with a shiny black gloss finish which matches the car’s body colour.
Adding to the Zafira Tourer’s feeling of spaciousness, an optional Panoramic Windscreen can be specified. This option, which first appeared on Astra GTC back in 2006, offers generous views, with the top of the windscreen extending back to the front row of seats. In addition, a large glass sunroof is also available on certain models, which stretches all the way to the rear of the vehicle.
6
Use of high quality fabrics in the interior mark the Zafira Tourer out as a luxury limousine, as well as a practical and versatile MPV. A range of new trims are available and there is a higher percentage of soft-touch surfaces compared with the current Zafira.
With over 30 storage compartments the Zafira Tourer is still immensely practical. FlexRail,
Vauxhall’s innovative storage system which can also be found in the current Meriva, is available on key models and complements the already generous stowage-cubby count. In total, 710 litres of storage space is available, 65 litres more than the current model, with a maximum storage capacity of 1,860 litres (up by 40 litres) when the three single seats in the second row are folded flat.
You can find further details on flexibility solutions in the Flexibility chapter, including the Flex7 seating system, the added storage space and the Panoramica Windscreen.
Choice of two new infotainment systems
Two new infotainment systems – Navi600 and Navi900 – are available as options for the Zafira
Tourer. Both systems use SD card technology, allowing not only the regular points of interest
(POIs) to be shown, but also the ability for further POIs to be downloaded and stored via USB connection on the device. The driver can select single points and store these in the address book as individual POIs.
Another new feature on both systems is revised satellite navigation which shows not only the fastest and shortest routes, but also the one on which a driver can expect to use the least amount of fuel, taking into account vehicle specification, road characteristics and driving-style.
The range-topping Navi900 takes the technology a stage further, with the ability to recognise voice commands in up to six languages to control navigation, radio, CD and USB connection. It also has a log book function which identifies journeys with a trip number and precisely records parameters like starting point and destination, route length and the time needed for the trip.
All data can be stored on a USB stick for external use, and the system can even separate data to show private and business trips individually.
7
An additional POI announcement informs the driver of points of interest in the direct proximity by audible signal, text or pop-up. The display can also be used as a digital picture frame for photographs.
8
FLEXIBILITY
With a newly-developed Flex7 seating system as well as a host of other new Flex features, the
Zafira Tourer defines new standards in interior versatility, while maintaining the Zafira family’s core principle of maximum on-board flexibility without seat removal.
While the second-generation 2010 Meriva offers unrivalled flexibility in a smaller format - particularly for young families - the new Zafira Tourer adds even more versatility, as well as high degrees of occupant luxury. This makes it the ideal choice for families with older children or for people who demand the refinement and luxury of an executive car, combined with generous load-carrying capability.
Individual seats in rear for maximum flexibility and comfort
While both the Zafira Tourer’s third row seats can still be folded down flush with the floor of the luggage compartment like its predecessors, engineers have completely re-designed the second row. No longer a bench, it now comprises three individual seats that can slide longitudinally by 210mm (100mm forwards, 110mm rearwards) independently of each other and can be folded flat, creating an even load floor. In addition, the backs of the three seats can be reclined in four different positions (to 0, 16, 20 and 24 degrees).
Thanks to the easy-to-reach loop handles that are coloured for better differentiation (red to fold down and black to pull upright), the seat backs can be completely folded down in one simple movement for maximum versatility without having to remove seats or headrests.
Lounge Seating offers second-row passengers first-class luxury
The highlight of the new Zafira Tourer is the Lounge Seating system that provides second-row passengers with the kind of seating space normally found in a large executive saloon car.
The three seats in the second row transform into two exceptionally comfortable seats with lots of extra legroom and shoulder space. The outer seats slide up to 280 mm backwards – a bestin-class dimension, and 70mm more than in the standard version – and then slide 50mm towards the centre of the cabin, a unique feature in this segment.
9
A clever and easy-to-operate folding/rotating mechanism then transforms the back of the middle seat into comfortable armrests for the passengers in the outer seats. Vauxhall/Opel has filed for a patent for this system, which is unique in the industry.
In this two-seat configuration in the rear, the Zafira Tourer offers second-row passengers optimum space, comfort and ergonomic seating.
Comfort and first-class ergonomics extend to front occupants, too….
The front of the Zafira Tourer’s cabin is logically arranged and offers both driver and passenger the highest levels of comfort. Slim A-pillars, large side windows and side rear-view mirrors mounted on the doors also greatly improve the driver’s visibility.
The Zafira Tourer comes as standard with innovative, large and anatomically designed front seats, which can be configured in a number of ways and are equipped with active head restraints. The front seats offer levels of comfort unique in the segment and a best-in-class adjustment range. Both seats can slide back 180mm, and the height of the driver’s seat can also be adjusted up to 65 mm higher. Both driver and front passenger seats provide occupants of every body type, shape and size the optimum position – especially very tall drivers, who often complain about limited space in vehicles in the compact segment.
An optional ergonomic driver’s seat is available which benefits from a tilt-adjustable seat cushion, adjustable lumbar support, and extendable seat cushion. The seat features the coveted seal of approval from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V (Action for Healthy Backs), an independent association of doctors and back experts.
The optional foldable and space-saving luggage compartment FlexCover can be stored in the rear and creates a level load floor and protects the backs of the seats from dirt. The two outer second-row seats have ISOFIX mountings and top tether eyelets for child safety seats.
10
FlexRail provides innovative storage system for centre console
The FlexRail centre console has been further enhanced over the Meriva’s system. It is constructed as a modular storage system on three levels:
Two rails made from high-quality polished aluminum run between the front seats. The
FlexRail modules slide back and forth on them.
The upper rail carries a generous armrest that opens to offer two storage compartments, for example for CDs.
Underneath is another compartment with two cup holders.
On the lowest level is another, deep storage container where personal items can be stored out of sight, covered by the armrest and cupholders. Due to its proximity to the AUX and
USB ports as well as the 12-volt socket, it is the perfect place to keep an MP3 player or a portable navigation device safely hidden from public view.
FlexRail comes with the space-saving electric parking brake.
FlexRail and the storage pockets in the front doors are indirectly illuminated by red light beams
(ambient lighting).
Over 30 storage spaces exactly where they’re needed
The Zafira Tourer has more than 30 storage compartments. Large, 1.5-litre beverage bottles can be stored safely and upright in the pockets on the front doors, and those on the back doors can hold 1.0-litre bottles. In another storage space above that, there is room for a mobile phone.
Passengers in the third row also have practical storage spaces on the sides as well as a console with two cup holders between the seats.
There are two large glove compartments in the instrument panel on the front passenger side.
Both have a lid to keep the contents from public view. The lower glove compartment also has an extra space for the car manual and holders for coins and pens. An open storage space between the two gloveboxes has a rubber lining to prevent items from sliding around.
11
The centre console in the cockpit features further practical storage areas: a compartment with lid in front of the central display and an open, deep space directly under the 12-volt socket, USB and AUX ports that are beneath the infotainment/climate controls.
On the driver’s side there is a compact, pull-out storage box that is ideal for small items such as sunglasses, wallets and mobile phones. In addition, storage boxes under the driver and front passenger seats are standard on many models.
Up to 1,860 litres of total volume
Using a five-seat configuration, the Zafira Tourer provides 710 litres of luggage compartment volume, 65 litres more than the current Zafira. The maximum load volume of 1,860 litres is available when the three seats in the second row are folded down.
New generation of FlexFix bicycle carrier system holds up to four bikes
The second generation of Vauxhall’s exclusive, fully-integrated FlexFix bicycle carrier system will be used for the first time on the Zafira Tourer, offering improved functionality and ease of use.
Based on the previous FlexFix carrier system, the second generation is also ready to use in seconds and disappears almost invisibly into the rear bumper when not in use. Easy handling without special tools was the priority.
The new FlexFix system is designed to accept two bicycles weighing up to 30kgs each (up from
20kg). An adaptor is available as an accessory that enables two additional bicycles weighing up to 20 kg each to be transported.
FlexFix is designed to carry a total weight of 100 kg.Thanks to the FlexFix bicycle carrier system’s low height, bikes can be mounted on its rails easily and without much effort. The new carrier bracket has rubber inserts on its fixing clips for stable mounting of each bicycle frame.
The bikes can also locked to the carrier.
It is now also possible to tilt the loaded bicycle carrier at such an angle that the tailgate can be opened, making the Zafira Tourer luggage compartment accessible from outside.
12
Panoramic Windscreen and sunroof
The Panoramic Windscreen stretches seamlessly from the back of the bonnet to a point over the front occupants’ heads. In contrast to conventional windscreens/glass roofs, there is no cross-member, so all occupants can enjoy an unobstructed view. An easy-to-operate shade hides the large screen when required.
Both the Panoramic Windscreen and Panoramic Sunroof are fitted with a special heatabsorbing foil. A power shade system under the Panoramic Sunroof blocks strong sun rays and keeps the interior pleasant and comfortable. The dark-tinted Solar Protect heat-absorbing glazing on the rear side windows also prevents the interior from getting too warm.
13
VEHICLE DYNAMICS AND SAFETY
The Zafira Tourer’s chassis offers drivers and passengers a high degree of agility and safety. ABS and ESP are standard features across all models. The front-axle assembly comes complete with an isolated auxiliary frame and McPherson struts derived from the Insignia. The rear-axle assembly, with its Watt’s link, has been taken from the Astra model and especially adapted to the needs of the Zafira Tourer
In addition, the new Zafira Tourer has a significantly longer wheelbase and a wider track. This enhances the driving experience and the stability of the vehicle. The wheelbase has been increased by 57mm and now totals 2,760mm. The wheel track has gained 96mm at the front and now stands at 1,584mm. At the rear, the track has grown by an extra 78mm and is now
1.588mm.
New front axle improves handling and comfort
The Insignia-derived front axle was especially adapted for the Zafira Tourer. The upper sides of the McPherson struts are double-acting bearings so that the forces acting upon the springs and shock absorbers are separated. The unsprung masses are reduced and the weight distribution is improved with steering swivels, A-frame and comfort sleeve being made from aluminium.
Space- and weight-efficient rear axle
The Zafira Tourer has been given a specially adapted combination of a compound crank with a
Watt’s link for the rear axle, technology already proven in the current Astra family. Steering precision and the vehicle’s stability in bends are significantly improved due to a unique combination of lateral rigidity and camber stiffness. The level of comfort and rate of shock absorption are also improved by the reduction of friction inside the suspension.
The Watt’s link sits immediately behind the central axle on the floor of the vehicle and comprises a movable compensation steering unit and a ball-and-socket joint that is attached to the cross struts with the wheels. The Watt’s link absorbs the cornering forces that arise in bends and redistributes them onto the small axle unit on the floor of the vehicle. This system
14 stops any sideways movements of the axle and absorbs and transfers around 80 percent of the horizontal forces which bear down on the rear wheels.
A further advantage is that the bearings of the main axle are subjected to less force. This means that the bearing liners are made softer, allowing the effects of broken or pitted road surfaces to be blocked out, resulting in a quieter cabin overall.
Another bonus of the new rear axle system in the Zafira Tourer is the FlexFix bicycle carrier.
FlexFix allows the Zafira Tourer to transport up to four bikes at a time and a load of up to 100 kilograms.
FlexRide chassis improves safety and handling
The mechatronic and electric bumper system which are part of the FlexRide chassis, ensure crisp and precise handling. The chassis automatically adapts to road conditions, speed, motion and the individual driving style of the person behind the wheel. A high degree of stability plus a responsive steering unit, deliver more balance and safety in emergency situations.
Sensors fitted to the body of the vehicle feed information to the Driving Mode Control (DMC) unit which in turn adjusts the chassis according to the current conditions. FlexRide possesses three different modes: the default setting for daily use, the “Tour” setting to ensure extra comfort and the “Sport” mode for more dynamic driving.
The standard mode is a good all-rounder. The “Sport” setting on the other hand delivers responses to throttle and wheel inputs, while also adapting the gear-shift programme on cars fitted with auto transmissions, as well as the optional AFL lighting system. The “Tour” mode, meanwhile, is designed to deliver a smoother ride.
Electronic power steering boosts efficiency
The newly developed Rack Assist Electric Power Steering (REPS) delivers a more dynamic driving experience. At lower speeds the power steering has is light and easy to use, while at higher speeds ensures more ‘connection’ with the driven wheels by reducing the level of power assistance.
15
A key advantage of the REPS system is its potential to cut fuel consumption and reduce CO
2 emissions. The electronic power steering only kicks in when it is needed so that there is no need for a hydraulic pump.
Driver Assistance Systems
Innovative Front Camera system
An all-new optional feature in the Zafira Tourer range is Vauxhall’s Front Camera system, a rarity in the MPV class that incorporates four key functions which enhance driver safety and convenience.
The Following Distance Indication helps prevent collisions and encourages drivers to keep a safe distance from the car in front. The car’s central display shows the distance away from the car ahead in seconds. If the driver is in a critical situation where a collision is imminent, the
Forward Collision Alert transmits a loud audible and visual warning. The sensitivity of the system can be controlled by the driver via a switch on the steering wheel.
In addition to the above systems, Front Camera also incorporates Traffic Sign Recognition, which identifies key road signs, such as speed-limit warnings, no overtaking signs and even traffic restriction signs. If fitted with AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) the system also benefits from a high-beam assist function.
16
POWERTRAINS
Three diesel and two petrol engines are available from the Zafira Tourer’s launch, ranging in power from 110PS to 165PS, with a further ecoFLEX derivative to follow soon afterwards, with emissions of just 119g/km.
The Zafira Tourer’s 2.0 CDTI common-rail turbodiesel engine is available with one of three power outputs: 110PS, 130PS and 165PS. Complementing this are two petrol engines: a 140PS
1.4-litre turbo and a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre, also producing 140PS.
Shortly after going on sale, Vauxhall will also offer an ecoFLEX version with even lower CO
2 emissions. Equipped with the Start/Stop system and further fuel-saving technologies, the new
Zafira Tourer 2.0 CDTI 130PS ecoFLEX emits just 119g/km CO
2
, and achieves a combined
62.8mpg. This makes it one of the lowest-emission and most efficient MPV engines ever.
Diesel engines balance power with efficiency
The 2.0 CDTI, 110hp engine consumes 54mpg (137g/km CO
2
,), yet it achieves 114mph and accelerates from 0-60mph in just 11.5 seconds. The 130PS version with the same efficiency figures (fuel consumption and CO
2
) reaches a top speed of 119mph and will hit 60mph in 10.6 seconds. The top of the range 165PS diesel engine, with Start/Stop fitted as standard, has a top speed of 129mph and 0-60mph time of 9.1 seconds.
Multi-layered efficiency package
The 2.0 CDTI common-rail turbo diesel has a new multiple injection system delivering up to
1,600 bar of pressure, improves the combustion process and reducing fuel consumption. To reduce friction in the engine, the two camshaft bearings have been improved and cylinder pressure sensors in the glow plugs (Cleantech Combustion Technology) enable very accurate combustion control.
17
In the 165PS version engine, a new turbocharger equipped with variable turbine geometry, regulates the accuracy of the charging pressure. In the 2.0 CDTI 130PS version a variable displacement oil pump delivers only the necessary oil pressure, thereby reducing engine loads.
While efficiency is increased, the 2.0 CDTi’s NVH qualities have been improved, thanks to a new injection strategy. An improved kinematic between the piston and the connection rod reduce the mechanical and combustion noises of the 2.0 CDTI engine unit.
Petrol engines
The smaller of the two engines fitted to the Zafira tourer is the state-of-the-art 1.4-litre turbo unit delivering 140PS. Using Start/Stop technology, it produces 45mpg and 148g/km CO
2..
The charged four-cylinder engine boasts a brand new electronic combustion control and twin overhead camshafts with variable valve timing technology. A clever map-controlled thermostat optimises the engine’s heat management, leading to even greater efficiency.
While in over boost mode, the 1.4 turbo engine gains an extra 20Nm (220Nm in total), making it more torquey than its Insignia counterpart. This means the 140PS Zafira Tourer with Start/Stop system can achieve 0-60mph in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 125mph.
A naturally-aspirated 1.8-litre, four cylinder petrol engine, also producing 140PS, is available as an alternative to the 1.4-litre turbo.
Zafira Tourer ecoFLEX only with 119g/km CO
2
Vauxhall will also offer a low CO
2
ecoFLEX version of the seven-seat MPV. Equipped with
Start/Stop as standard and a comprehensive package of ecoFLEX technologies, the new Zafira
Tourer 2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX 130PS provides an impressive 63mpg, while emitting just 119 g/km
CO
2
. Despite the ecoFLEX’s frugal nature, it can still achieve a top speed of 120mph and a 0-
60mph time of 10.6 seconds.
18
On top of the improvements to the 2.0 CDTI engine, the Zafira Tourer ecoFLEX also runs a taller set of gear ratios to reduce engine revs. For improved aerodynamics, the body is 10 mm lower and an active aero shutter is integrated in the radiator grille. While it remains open to maintain optimal temperature at low speeds and when the engine is running under high thermal load such as on inclines and when in towing mode, the aero shutter automatically closes at higher speeds and directs driving wind around the car. This results in lower fuel consumption and CO
2 emissions.
The Zafira Tourer 2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX 130PS has 225/50 R17 low-rolling-resistance tyres. The shift indicator – an illuminated gauge located between the speedometer and revolution counter – signals the driver the ideal moment to shift up and helps to adapt to a fuel-saving driving style.
Energy recuperation in engine overrun mode
To ensure optimum electrical energy management, Vauxhall has introduced a braking energy recuperation system to the Zafira Tourer ecoFLEX which recovers kinetic energy via the generator in engine overrun mode, converting this to electrical energy and feeding it into the battery. This happens automatically when the driver takes his/her foot off the accelerator pedal or presses the brake pedal. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the generator output is greatly reduced and the electrical energy consumers are powered in a fuel-saving manner by the buffered electrical energy. This relieves the engine from having to drive the generator when accelerating and thus reduces consumption and emissions. In addition – like in all the Zafira
Tourer models – a clutch only activates the air conditioning compressor when it is actually needed.
Start/Stop system standard on key diesel and petrol models
Vauxhall Start/Stop technology, which is available on 130 and 165PS 2.0 CDTi diesels, as well as the 1.4-litre turbo petrol, is highly efficient and helps to mitigate environmental impact. As soon as the driver goes into neutral, the Start/Stop system is activated and the engine unit cuts out automatically. The revolution counter needle then assumes the Autostop position. When
19 the driver wants the engine to start up again, he/she just goes into first gear and departs. A powerful battery ensures that there is no delay in the engine starting up again.
For safety reasons and to ensure the comfort of passengers, the temperature and pressure functions of the brake power assist unit remain active during the Auto-Stop phase of the
Start/Stop system. When necessary, for example during slow city traffic, the driver can manually de-activate the system, using the “eco” switch.

1) Fuel consumption (H-Gas) according to MVEG-B.
H-Gas: Values reflect test gas G20 following 1999/100/EC calculation method.
All data refer to the European base model with standard equipment. Fuel consumption data and CO
2
emissions data are determined according to regulation 2007/715/EC, taking into consideration the vehicle curb weight, as stipulated by the regulation. Additional equipment can lead to slightly higher fuel consumption and therefore CO
2
exhaust emissions than the declared values. In addition, they can raise the vehicle’s curb weight and in some cases also increase the gross vehicle weight, the maximum allowable axle loads and respectively reduce the permitted trailer load. Therefore the maximum speed may be decreased while acceleration time can be increased. The published performance figures are possible with the vehicle’s curb weight excluding driver plus a 200 kilogram load allowance.
