Semester 2, 2011
TASK: 3
Spoken.
Imaginative
text.
TASK :
Select a topic from the choices offered below which relate to the play, “The Crucible” and “48 Shades of
Brown” and then, prepare a 3 to 5 minute presentation per student as an individual or as a pair. You are
expected to be familiar with the script and be able to perform with confidence and flair. Costuming and
props, whilst not essential, would enhance your delivery.
The Crucible
1.
As an investigator employed by the Massachusetts Governor’s office you are sent to Salem in
1693 after the witch trials. You interview a survivor who fills in a gap or silence by revealing
startling revelations and previously unknown facts of why and how the events unfolded.
2.
Present a montage of monologues that fills an obvious gap or silence for a character in the
play. You could include a character’s justification of their actions; an exploration of a
character’s psyche; an outline of events that impacted on their actions or an explanation about
the character’s innermost fears and desires.
3.
You are auditioning for a drama troupe that intends to present a modern day interpretation of
the play. Perform a collage of excerpts from the play which highlights selected discourses for
example lust, power, revenge, vengeance, theocracy of the church and innocence, in a
contemporary context. Your performance must, however, be consistent with the original play.
4.
Present a sermon, which would have been given by Reverend Hale, Reverend Paris, Judge
Hathorne or Deputy- GovernorDanforth and demonstrates their Puritan values and justifies
their decisions.
5.
In consultation with your teacher, create your own topic based on the discourses and values of
the play.
48 Shades of Brown
1.
Create a montage of monologues demonstrating stereotypes or binary oppositions within the
play, for example: - gender, youth, family and culture.
2.
Choose one of the main themes from the play and create a script, which explores that theme.
3.
Select a discourse/theme/ youth issue from the play and present a number of scenes, which
explore it from a different perspective.
4.
Create and present a scene set after the play has ended involving Dan’s mother and Jacq or
Dan and his father. The scene should present both text and subtext to explore events, themes
and characters.
5.
In consultation with your teacher, create your own topic based on the discourses and values of
the play.
