PROJECT EXAMPLES Puget Sound Creosote Removal Program: Created and managed a six year program to reduce toxicity and improve habitat in Puget Sound. Obtained over $7 million in state funding and removed thousands of tons of creosote logs, pilings and other derelict shoreline structures. Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve Management Plan: Facilitated 18 months of negotiations between tribes, environmental interests, community groups, agencies and industry to identify key issues and opportunities. Lead drafting of Management Plan to protect critical habitat near Cherry Point, WA. Washington State’s Nonpoint Source Management Plan: Lead agency team in the development of plan including all outreach and coordination with other agencies and interest groups. Basin Characterization: Lead formulation team in development of a new basin characterization framework now used in local shoreline planning around the Washington. Low Impact Development Standards: As Stormwater Unit Supervisor instigated low impact development improvements in Washington State Stormwater Technical Manual at the Department of Ecology. Total Maximum Daily Loads: Developed initial framework for implementation Washington’s water pollution reduction program (TMDLs). Program included strategic planning, science, interagency coordination, and community involvement. Community Policing Policies: Lead Planning Commission Subcommittee in development of a Community Policing element in Olympia’s Comprehensive Plan. Washington Forest Practices Rules: As key staff to the Washington Forest Practices Board facilitated development of Washington’s wetlands and stream protection rules related to forest management. Acid Deposition Assessment: Coordinated statewide assessment of extent, severity and effects of acid deposition in Washington State. Prepared report for Washington State Legislature and participated in nationwide workgroups. Land Use and Water Quality: Research project evaluated the effects of land use characteristics on water quality in the lakes of central Sweden. Salmon Protection: Developed a statistical model to predict salmon spawning impact areas based on sediment loads. Land Management and Restoration: Managed leasing and restoration activities on 1.6 million acres of lakes, rivers and marine lands owned by the State of Washington including over 1500 use authorizations for marinas, industrial facilities, power, gas and fiber optic cable systems; log storage; wastewater outfalls; and finfish and shellfish operations. Clean-up and Redevelopment: Represented the State of Washington in several municipal waterfront redevelopment projects including clean-up planning, investigation and negotiations. Large Project Permitting: Member of Washington State Multi-Agency Permit (MAP) Team designated to prepare appropriate permits and authorizations for Pacific International Terminal facility in Whatcom County. Shoreline Master Programs: Represented the State of Washington in Shoreline Program updates in five municipalities. FERC: Represented the State of Washington in FERC Relicensing of the Baker River Hydro System. Local Government Assistance: Provided planning and technical assistance to local governments around Puget Sound on watershed planning and stormwater management.
