Lord of Life Lutheran Church Council Meeting
MINUTES
February 8, 2010
Mission Statement: As God’s Children, we live, learn, and share our faith based on his Word,
to touch others with His love.
Present: Jim Kuhnert, Pastor Amanda, Dan Kuhnert, Cheryl Schram, Jason Kempthorne,
Tammy Wilkerson, Eileen Dubowski, Liz Hursh, Tammy Wilkerson and Nancy Uptgraft
Absent: Karen Kuhnert and Jake Jacobsen.
Call to Order- 7:06 p.m.

 Resignation of Alan Meyer, as Vice President and Rosanna Meyer as Treasurer

Reports:
Pastor’s report – Pastor Kempthorne (Includes comments/recommendations on retreat)
 Update of Council contact
 Rotation of Council Bible study
 New Delegates of Synod Assembly need to be replaced as they were to be Alan and
Rosanna Meyer.
Dates of Synod Assembly are:
o Thurs, Friday and Saturday, April 22, 23 & 24th.
o Recommendation of a male and female from Synod
Alternates were Nancy Uptgraft and Sarah Ross
 Nancy Uptgraft – confirmed she will attend
 Sarah Ross – awaiting confirmation
 Mission Sunday on March 21st – Rev. Seyenkulo will be here to talk about Liberia –
to update us on the Kuwaa mission.
Talking about having a Liberian Potluck
 Sunday, April 11th, Linda Mae Scolman – Honduras
o Per Nancy Uptgraft, last year funds were specifically for VBS and it didn’t
happen due to uprising, etc. Would like to check to see if those will be used

for this coming year.
Easter Vigil - (April 2nd 9:00 pm to 12:00 a.m. Sunday morning.)
 5 Sense of faith – Good Friday to Easter morning – 28 hour prayer
vigil.
 ½ hour prayer slots
 Touch, taste, sight, smell and sound
 Signup sheet – at next month’s Council meeting
Council Retreat agreed priorities:
 Connection to outside church (progressive dinners, etc)
 Having a youth choir
 Youthful Music (motions)
 Young adult/college age range24-35
 Couples/Parent Groups
 Christian Parenting
 Financial Peace University
 Men’s group.
 Evangelism
 Care packages for college students away from home and
individuals in the military overseas.
 Float for 4th of July Parade
Treasurer’s Report – Dan Kuhnert
 Budget – Currently is working on going through all of the accounts and sub accounts
 Rebuilding the church budget file in a new version of Quick Books
o Next month there will be clean reports and graphs for the Council to view
o So many designations are happening now, that we cannot access funds when
needed to pay regular bills and there isn’t always enough to cover everything
o Would like to create a designated account called “Savings”.
 It goes into a regular account but can be used for General
o Would like to add 2 more accounts, one for designated and one for
undesignated, savings account and 4th account – Debit card account for Office
Supplies/Petty Cash (limited to $200.00) at Mt. McKinley.

Discussed as a group about getting a mileage credit card. Dan Kuhnert is going to
check into an Alaska Airlines credit card to earn miles for the church, to use to pay
large bills on.
Currently owe $839.47 for August and September for Amanda and September for
Jason for retirement
Suggest having an email address set up for each Executive member of Council and
all Committee Members. Contact Jason Kempthorne to set up.

Stewardship report – Tammy Wilkerson
 Teller List. Would like to get a new form for reimbursement of In-Kind donations.
 Time & Talent information.
Youth report – Jason Kempthorne
 Super Bowl Pizza overnight - 12 kids spent the night – they made 140 pizzas

o The youth spent time after making pizzas, watching movies upstairs,
playing video games and listening to music.
o Have about 30 pizzas left over
o $1,087.00 – expense was about $800 and still 30 pizzas to be sold, so far
made $287.00 and if you add the profit from the remaining 30 pizzas
when they sell, it would be a total of $317.00
All Alaska Road trip.
o 1st week of June – 3rd through the 10th
 Adventures in Alaska RV rentals – quote
$2,000 for 1 week RV rental. 10 can fit in the RV
 Will check with congregation to see if any congregation members
are willing to rent out their RV
o Stan Stephen’s Tours ½ price
o Anchorage, service project and church
o Seward, Sea Life
o Denali – have to camp and White Water Rafting
o Cost for gas 1,200 miles $500.00.
Total amount $4,542.00
5 youth are going to the All Alaska Youth Gathering March 5-7th.
o Will be checking with Fairbanks Lutheran for final numbers and see about
car pooling or renting from Seekins.
2012 Lutheran Youth gathering is going to be in New Orleans.
To Save a Life – possibly have a church movie night when it comes out on DVD
Possible Topic for Youth during Sunday school: Challenge Day, which was
going on this past week. This was intense icebreakers 100 students per session
Eielson, North Pole, Lathrop.
o Ask if any of the youth participated and have them share what they
learned.
Evangelism report – Nancy Uptgraft
 Care packages – awaiting direction on where they will go and when
 New Lord of Life Brochure
o Jason is checking on-line at instaprint.com for pricing on 2 sided
brochures
 Visitor Packet - Start handing them with jam. Packets will include:
o New LOL brochure
o Information about the Lord of Life Lutheran church
o Postcard with information about what is going on in the next month
o Book marks for whatever season is going on in the church (Easter,
Christmas, etc...)
o Latest newsletter
o Hand out with Jam to every new visitor
Note: Also can be used for people to take to give to someone they want to have
visit.
 Suggestion to add information in bulletin about Pastor’s sermon’s on-line and list
Lord of Life’s new Website location.
Worship & Music report – Liz Hursh
 Worship and Music
o Training for Power Point and Acolytes February 21st
o Contemporary Music Festival looking at options
o Easter Vigil

Joint choir – Carol Bras volunteered to work on
Communion bread and setting up communion: will start getting families to
participate in making bread and setting up the communion.
February through May sign up boards available in Narthex for congregation
members to fill in.
Sound system switching off between Jason and John – Contemporary John,
Traditional Jason is working out.
Share with Karen – whoever is snacks for the month, have them do the
kitchen cleanup, to include Communion cleanup
Pastor Amanda is putting together a kitchen clean up check list.
Missions/Social Ministry report – Karen Kuhnert – not present
Education report – Eileen Dubowski
 VBS – Nona Elliott and Karen Laflore – information was passed on to them about
options for materials/programs. They are working on Dates and times and program.
 Children’s Sermons: Lent 5 Senses – working with Pastor Amanda.
 Easter egg Hunt – plastic eggs, symbols of Easter and Bible verses.
o Looking for egg cartons that hold 12 eggs
 Ordered books for “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World” Got them for under
$11.00 a piece.
o For a Bible Study – Monday nights most likely
Facilities report – Jake Jacobsen – not present
Correspondence – Jim Kuhnert – nothing to report
 Letter from Operation Boot Strap Africa looking for $
Old Business:
 Smorgasbord – Have not heard who is heading up at this time.
New Business continued:
 Phone book for Eielson - Do we want to be put in the Eielson AFB Guide and
Telephone Directories. Would like to consider putting an ad in the Eielson AFB
yellow book section.
o $280.00 for name and phone number listing
o $440.00 for name and phone number listing and to be included on their Web
page
o $655.00 for a larger ad, individual listing and listing on their web page.
Council discussed options and benefits in placing the advertisement. Jason Kempthorne
proposed to finance the advertisement utilizing the Youth Fund. He felt this may
increase our youth numbers. The $440.00 ad was agreed to be the best ad for our
needs.
All council members were in favor of placing an ad the Eielson area phone guide.

Recommendations for Vice President – No names came forward during meeting.
o Announcement will be made on Sunday by Jim Kuhnert
