Syllabus
This course is an introduction to engineering mechanic concepts. Subject areas include force
systems; static equilibrium; centroids and center of gravity; shear and moment concepts;
friction; and moments of inertia

Section 5: Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00 am to 11:00 am
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To introduce students to basic concepts of forces, couples and moments in two and
three dimensions.
2. To develop analytical skills relevant to forces and momentum calculations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate ability in the following
areas:
3. Determine the resultant of force systems.
4. Determine the centroid and centre of mass of areas and volumes.
5. Distinguish between various force systems
6. Analyze the reactions and pin forces using equilibrium equations and free body
diagrams.
7. Determine friction forces and their effect on the equilibrium of a system.
8. Apply sound analytical techniques and logical procedures in solving engineering
problems.
