Phylum Chordata includes the Subphylum Vertebrata as well as some invertebrate members (the
lancelets [Subphylum Cephalochordata] and the tunicates [or sea squirts; Subphylum
Urochordata]).
Read section 31.2 entitled “Chordates” on pages 638 to 640 and make sure you are able to
describe the four characteristics that all chordates have in common.

pp. 537 – 539
Read section 36.1 entitled “Overview of Chordates” on pages 537 to 539. Then complete
“Section Review” questions 1, 2 and 5.
Assignment
Complete the worksheet, “Common Characteristics of Vertebrates.” An answer key is available,
if you need to see one.
