Text : Introductory versions of Microsoft Office XP Professional: New Perspectives

Series (bundle includes

Word 2002, Excel 2002, Access 2002, and PowerPoint 2002). In addition to the texts, you will need a number of 3.5” HD (1.44mb formatted)

NEW diskettes; bring at least five to each class.

E-Mail and WebCT Account : An e-mail account that will be used to access e-mail and other INTERNET services. A WebCT account is also required to access online course materials.

Testing and Tutorial Software: SAM & TOM XP

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Overall structure of computer problem solving and method of constructing computer solutions in a business environment. Overview of hardware/software systems.

Data and information processing in organizations and other computer uses in management. Usage of business software packages such as Windows, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, and databases. Applications and examples will generally be from administrative areas.

OBJECTIVES: 1) To provide a basic understanding of the usage of computers and the

Internet in a business setting; 2) to introduce students to a Windows-based computing environment; and 3) to bring students to a minimum skill level in using Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation graphics and database software.

MIS 146 is an introduction to micro-computing, Windows 98/NT/2000, the Internet, and

Microsoft Office XP. The course is taught in the computer lab and is strictly a “hands-on” course. Concepts are taught through application and practice during the lab sessions;

Course grades are based on:

Assignments/Homework (4) 20% A = 90-100 D = 60-69+

Hands-on Exams (3) 50% B = 80-89+ F = below 60

Comprehensive Final exam 30% C = 70-79+

ATTENDANCE AND HOMEWORK:

You are strongly suggested to make every effort to attend all classes. Historically, class absences have resulted in significantly lower grades. If a student must be absent, notify me in advance via e-mail. The student remains responsible for all material covered in class, regardless of attendance.

Students must complete all homework assignments in order to receive a passing grade.

Every assignment must be satisfactorily completed before the end of the term in order to pass the course. All assignments are due the beginning of class on the due date. The late penalty is 50%. An assignment handed in more than five (5) days late will receive a grade of zero; no exceptions. In addition to those four assignments, you are also expected to complete the exercises in the Homework column on the following page. These additional homework assignments may be submitted to your instructor at his discretion .

EXAMS AND MAKEUPS :

Students will complete three hands-on exams, one for each unit for Word, Excel, and

Access. The Final Exam is a comprehensive hands-on exam that covers Word, Excel,

Access, and PowerPoint. You will need a blank disk to complete each exam. You may use your textbook and/or notes and you are welcome to use the Help features in Windows or the Office application on which you are being tested. Students MAY NOT share books or notes during exams. Students will neither offer nor receive help on exams. Students who violate standards of academic honesty will be subject to penalties in accordance with University regulations.

For students who miss an exam with an excused absence and previous arrangement with the instructor, the Comprehensive Final Exam score will count as the make-up exam score for the missed exam. There will NOT be any additional make-up exams. Students who miss an exam due to an unexcused absence will receive a grade of zero for that exam. Good News! Students may be exempt from taking the Comprehensive

Final Exam if they 1) have taken all three midterms, 2) turned in all assignments, and 3) have an “A” average at the end of the term.

COMPUTER LABS

ASB 214 & 215 computer labs will be open for walk-in use.



Labs may be reserved for special sessions. Watch postings on lab doors for changes to normal hours!



Room M10 in the Von Braun Research Institute is also available Mon-Fri, 24 hours a day and extended hours on weekends. You must show a current UAH ID to enter VBRI-M10 and some other labs on campus.



CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE:

Students are expected to remain in the classroom for the duration of the class meeting. If a student must depart early due to unavoidable circumstances, the student should inform the instructor before the beginning of the class and take a seat near the front of the classroom so as to minimize the disruption to the class.

Leaving and re-entering the class is not permitted except in the event of an emergency.

Students should demonstrate respect for the instructor, other students, and the general educational process during the class period.

ACADEMIC CONDUCT:

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students are expected to adhere to the

University Code of Student Conduct as set forth in Chapter 7 of the Student Handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to gain clarification from me if any conduct that could be considered in violation of the University Judicial Code. Ignorance of the Code, its interpretation or course policies is not an excuse.
