SAMPLE CALL FOR CHAPTERS CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Book Chapter Submission Deadline: Sept 10, 2014 Global Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality Education in Developing Countries A book edited by Florence Kyoheirwe Muhanguzi and Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo To be published by IGI Global: Introduction Societal gender norms and roles relating to sexuality are implicated among the factors that continue to cause increased vulnerability to sexual abuse, HIV transmission, unwanted teenage pregnancies, sexual exploitation and the overall silence about sexual experience for those gendered as girls and women. Such gendered sexual experiences perpetuate gender inequalities in all spheres of life. Provision of gender- sensitive sexuality education, commonly referred to as: a life-long process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs and values about identity, relationships and intimacy encompassing sexual development, reproductive health, interpersonal, cultural, psychological and spiritual dimensions of sexuality from the cognitive domain (information), the affective domain (feelings, values and attitudes), and the behavioural domain (communication, decisionmaking and other relevant personal skills) - especially to the young generation, is widely seen as a valuable intervention for addressing gender inequalities and sexuality concerns, thereby facilitating the process of attaining gender equality and equity in society. Sexuality Education empowers young people with skills for managing their sexuality, particularly addressing the above sexuality problems to enhance boys and girls capabilities. The book will examine the state of gender and sexuality education with specific focus on the operation of gender dynamics in sexuality education in developing countries. It will articulate the interaction between the contemporary curriculum based ideas of sexuality education and the gendered realities of key participants (students, teachers and parents) in the pedagogic process. Some of the key issues to be explored include the general theoretical and conceptual discussion on gendering sexualities in developing countries and Africa in particular, to provide the context within which sexuality education is located; the connection between gender, sexuality and schooling; sexuality education provision with particular focus on the gender dimension of the curriculum – the official and non official curriculum content and pedagogical process; young peoples’ experiences with the sexuality education in relation to their lived experiences and the experiences and perceptions of key sexuality educators – the teachers and parents as well as a discussion about gender responsive sexuality education. Objective of the Book This comprehensive and timely publication aims to be an essential reference source, building on the available literature in the field of gender, sexuality and sexuality education in developing countries while providing for further research opportunities in this dynamic field. It is hoped that this book will provide the resources necessary for policy makers, programme developers and implementers in the respective government departments and civil society in the development of interventions that can make schooling more responsive to the challenges of adolescent health and sexuality. The generated information will also help in the development of appropriate quality and gender sensitive sexuality education curricula, teaching aids and instructional methods in school as well as in teacher training institutions. The book on gender and sexuality education is timely during this era of HIV and AIDS pandemic that is claiming lives of millions of people, currently on the increase in the developing world, particularly from amongst the youth.
