I made, 1 thing I do not like Kingore, 2007
What makes a good question for an Exit Ticket?
Exit tickets are centered on a basic teaching strategy that we will call Essential Questions. To
begin using Essential Questions, ask yourself one guiding question every time you plan a lesson:
If I’ve taught this lesson to students well, what one question should they be able to answer
to prove to me they got the big ideas?
Essential Questions should differ based on the depth of the standard or objective being taught.

Writing Response Cards
Writing Response Cards Directions
How to Use/Activity Options
You have three main sections:
 E and N : (Expository and Narrative)
 S and P: (Singular and Plural)
 Reasons, Ways, and Things
- Begin with showing a prompt to the students. Refer to the last sentence and
identify if this is Expository (E) or Narrative (N). The key words to help
identify the type of writing are in parentheses. Students will either hold up the
E or N card.
- Once students have identified the prompt, move onto the next card: Singular
(S) and Plural (P). Again, using the last sentence, identify if the prompt is
singular or plural (asking for one or more than one). Students will hold up the
S or P card for identification.
- If the prompt has been identified as Expository, you will use the last three
cards: reasons, ways, or things. You might see key words in the last sentence
such as why = reasons, how = ways, or what= things. Understand that these
words will not always appear. Discuss these three terms with the students and
see which one best applies to the prompt. Make the connection with students
that these will be their main or body paragraphs in the writing.
- Using these cards will help students identify the differences between
Expository and Narrative prompts, build knowledge of Key Words (found
within the last sentence), and make students more aware of their writing;
especially when identifying if the prompt is singular or plural.

Pinning Ceremony Kit to
Recognize Volunteers
.Pinning
Ceremony Kit
Thank you for taking the time to honor and recognize your Classroom Heroes!
In the kit you will find the following:
*Requested pin(s)
*4 Different Design packs of cards
Please have your kids pick a card they would like to give to their Classroom Hero, have them fill out why
the Classroom Hero makes a difference to them, and how it makes them feel when the Hero comes in to
help. If they are too young please have them draw pictures, unfolding the card works great for this.
Then arrange a time that is convenient for you in the Classroom as well as for the volunteer. This can be
a surprise or planned event, however you and your kids want to present it.
The teacher then has a Pinning Ceremony in their Classroom for their Hero with their kids reading/giving
the volunteer the cards that they made for them.
Preferably, have one ceremony at a time to make it more impactful for the kids and for the Classroom
Hero.
Please take a picture during the Pinning Ceremony and send to darcey.martin@d2dsolutions.com or email
and we can make arrangements to have someone take a picture for you. We would like to have an
ongoing slide show of all the Pinning Ceremonies at the end of the year appreciation breakfast for the
volunteers.
Please return the Pinning Kit envelope with the unused cards to the VIC box so we can continue the
process with other teachers.
Thanks again for helping honor our Classroom Heroes.

Flash Cards
The more exposure your child has to these fundamental elements prior to and in Kindergarten the more success your child will
have, not only in Kindergarten, but this strong foundation will lay a path of success throughout their elementary school years.
Activities
If there are older siblings in the house, it is nice to get them involved, if possible.
Create an ABC Train

Laying all the ABC’s on the floor, you spread out the cards randomly. Then they have to find A, laying the upper case
cards on the top and lower case on the bottom. If the child gets stuck, singing the ABC song along with pointing to
each letter as you sing helps them learn the alphabet order. They are having a blast but it is teaching them at the same
time.

Have your child write their ABC’s (upper case and lower case) on lined paper, if they get stuck have them point and
sing the letters of the alphabet until they get to the letter they are stuck on, this usually helps jog their memory and they
can move forward, or they can use the ABC Train to help them.
Sight Words

As you go through the words, help them sound out the words that you are able to sound out. Make two piles, the ones
they know and the ones they still need to work on, you can make a chart or use a sheet to keep track of how many
words they know, the kids love to try and “beat” their number.

Another fun activity that they like is if you spread the words on the floor and they point and say the words they know as
fast as they can, ie. How many words can they pick up and say correctly in 1 minute or 2 minutes.

You can have them say the word and make a sentence with the words equaling their age, will also help with counting.
Say the word is “like”, if they are 5, they could say, “I like cars.” Since it is only 3 words, ask them what color the cars
they like, they will quickly pick up on the game and want to count all their fingers to make a sentence.

Spread sight words all over the floor and see if they can make small sentences with the words. This is a little more
advanced, so if it isn’t working don’t get discouraged, just move onto another activity.
Number Order and Identification you can use the same activities as the ABC’s and Sight Words above
Read with Your Child
Building Basic Literary Skills

By asking any number of the following questions during reading time, it will help build the foundation of Literacy
Skills and Reading Comprehension for your child

What is the main idea of the story?
*What happens in the beginning, middle and end of story?

Who are the characters in the story?
*Is the book Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Computer Websites and Programs
Tumblebooks.com

The school/county website has a link to the site that you will have access to any number of books that will be read to
your child, as the book is being read, it highlights the words as they are reading, which increases your child’s
vocabulary and word recognition significantly. In addition to them reading the story, the child then can take a Tumble
Quiz which helps them with Reading Comprehension as well as getting them ready to take AR Tests at school and the
computer based assessment testing.
Starfall.com

This an excellent website for your child to work/play on independently. This will build their familiarity with working
on a computer and following instructions, as well as working on letters and sounds. Discovery Testing is all computer
based, so the more exposure your child has to independent computer work the more ready and comfortable (s)he will be
when it comes to computer testing.
Sight Word Power Point Presentations

If you have Power Point software on your home computer, these presentations can be sent to you, contact
darcey.martin@d2dsolutions.com . The power point presentations show the word, give a pause for the child to try the
word, it then says the word, then repeats the word.
The Letter Factory CD program—Leap Frog

If your child is having a hard time with their letter and sounds this CD program is fantastic. It can be purchased at most
major retailers for approximately $10.

Teachers give anywhere between 30 sec to 1 minute to complete the math fact family. You put
plus sign or times sign in the box, the math fact family number on the line and start the timer.
Some teachers start 45 sec to 1 minute. Then when they get through them, they have to go
through all 12 families again and get it in 30 secs for true mastery. Other just start at 30 sec.

In Moodle as Math Fact Kit Instructions,
both for Addition and Multiplication
Math Fact Kit--Addition
Purpose: Math facts are essential and proven entities that will increase Math scores. When the
fundamental math facts are memorized brain power can be used to learn other math building
techniques. If a child is struggling with math facts or they have to think, calculate or count on
fingers it slows the learning process down. Our goal is to give every COLE student the math fact
family cards that they need, so that they can quickly go through the cards over and over to get the
facts down. It is a building skill. When they master one set of cards, they hand them in and get
the next set of cards and the process continues until they learn all the math facts.
Contents: Sets of Flashcards are broken down into bundles with 2 fact families in each bundle; ie
(0&1; 2&3; 4&5; thru 12)
How to Use: Since there are 2 fact families in each bundle, you first want to break out the fact
family your child is working on. The 0 fact family all starts with 0; the 1 fact family all starts
with 1, etc. You want to start with 0 and build confidence and speed. Put the one fact family
they are working on in a snack/sandwich bag and put the remainder of the cards in a safe place
only to be brought out when the focused on fact family is mastered. The definition of mastered
would mean that the math facts come quickly, no hesitation, no counting on fingers, etc. Since
the answers are on the back of each flashcard your child can work independently or with a
partner.
