The following list of topics is intended to guide the student during their studying of the topics introduced in the lab.
Not all topics in each chapter will be tested; however, any topics introduced in the laboratory by the instructor should
be considered information that will be tested. This list is meant only to guide the student as they study each chapter for
the exams. As you read through each chapter, pay particular attention to the words marked in bold and italics.

 Chapter 5 –Igneous Rocks
o What is an igneous rock?
o What are the differences between intrusive igneous rocks?
 i.e., what is lava and magma? Study figures.
o Igneous rock textures
 Crystal size
 Know the various size terms and how/why each is
associated primarily with intrusive or extrusive rocks (i.e.,
cooling rates)
o Mineral composition of igneous rocks
 What are the primary felsic and mafic minerals?
 How does mineral composition influence the color index of an
igneous rock?
o Igneous rock classification/ igneous rock identification worksheet
 Be able to completely identify the igneous rocks from the lab
 Be able to identify each property associated with each specimen
 In other words, you should be able to fill in completely a
blank igneous rock identification worksheet by examining
the igneous rock specimens
