Advanced Placement Chemistry Summer Assignment





This assignment must be received on or before 9:00am on August 11th. Please personally deliver it to Mrs.
Schiern in the main office or mail it to Valencia High School (attn. A.P. Chemistry).
A safety/equipment exam and a polyatomic quiz will be given the first day of school. Failure to score an 85.0%
on these or failure to complete the assignment in its entirety will result in removal from A.P. Chemistry.
Although your summer assignment (including all flashcards) is due on or before August 11th, students are encouraged
to either memorize the information prior to this date or make additional flashcards as a study tool.
For all flashcards (key terms, polyatomics, equipment), students need to purchase 3x5 index cards (smaller cards are
OK). These index cards need to be either spiral bound or bound with an o-ring. No loose-leaf index cards. Place
only one term per card. Handwrite each term, do NOT type.
Any indications of plagiarism (copying another’s work or allowing it to be copied) will result in removal from A.P.
Chemistry.
Check-list

Checkout the Zumdahl Chemistry, 5th edition, textbook from the library ASAP!
The Complete Solutions Guide to the Zumdahl’s Chemistry, 5th edition, can be purchased on Amazon. Although
not required, it can be very useful for the summer assignment and throughout the year.

Make flashcards and memorize the list of polyatomic ions. (see attached sheet)

Make flashcards and memorize the laboratory equipment. (see attached sheet)

Students need to correctly identify and state the function of each piece of equipment.

Make flashcards and memorize the Key Terms for chapters 1 and 2

The “Key Terms” for each chapter can be found next to the summary at the end of the chapter.

The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) has excellent lecture notes and review materials for each of
the major units in AP Chemistry. We will be using this link often: http://apchemistrynmsi.wikispaces.com/home.
From here, click on the “AP Chemistry Class Lecture Notes and Instructional Videos” on the right of the screen.
Scroll a little down, and under “All things stoichiometry,” you will find the pdf’s ‘Chemical Foundations’ and
‘Atoms, Molecules & Ions’. These are included in the assignment. There are companion videos for these that can
be found at the above link, or at:
Chemical Foundations Video (Chapter 1 lesson): http://vimeo.com/14216778
Atoms, Molecules & Ions (Chapter 2 lesson): http://vimeo.com/14217141
WATCH each video, and complete all exercises in the notes.
*If, for whatever reason, the website is down, use your text to complete these notes.

Read Chapters 1 and 2 in your textbook and do the following problems at the end of chapter. Show all
work for any problems that require it. No work, no credit. For concept questions, answer in complete
sentences. Write legibly or your answer will be marked wrong.

Chapter 1: 16-66

Chapter 2: 15-74
~If you need additional practice, go to kalmerscience.weebly.com/ap-chemistry.html
~If you wish to get ahead, complete the ‘03 Stoichiometry’ lesson on the NMSI website.
If you have any questions, please e-mail before June 5th. We look forward to meeting all of you!
