MARIA DELLO,CN 75 PLANDOME ROAD MANHASSET, NY 516-365-1222 www.Dellonutritionals.com I wanted to recap with some of my suggestions during my nutrition lecture at Salem HSA meeting. March is National Nutrition Month, a perect month to “Spring into Action” with Healthy foods. Enjoy! At a Glance 1. It’s important to look for Hidden Sugars in our food supply. Did you know 1- 20oz starbucks Frappaccino has 88 grams of sugar. And you know the ratio 4-grams per 1-teaspon, that’s a whopping 22 teaspoons of sugar. let’s not leave out: A blueberry muffin comes in second, with 54 grams of Sugar. and one of America’s Favorite breakfast “flavored Oatmeal” with 18grams of sugar. 2. Food sensitivities can be making your kids feel sluggish. Gluten, wheat, rye, and it doesn’t stop there, food allergies can hamper the bodies ability to loose weight and can mimic ADHD. 3. Vitamin D plays an important role in fighting diabetes, Fatigue, depression, and seasonal affective disorder. It’s stated 70% of Americans are deficient. 4. Healthy Fats are necessary for brain health and skin and nails. For example Avocado’s, nuts, Chia seeds and nut butters, all can be used as a Healthy after school snack. 5. Staying hydrated is key for general well being and crucial for our Athletes. Coconut water: 98% water and rich in B vitamins, lycopene, Vitamin C, and potassium- a mineral necessary for absorption. Potassium is the key mineral in staying hydrated. Foods High in Potassium Here are just a few: Vegetables Potato, 1 medium has 926 mg potassium Sweet potato, 1 medium has 540 mg potassium Spinach, ½ cup cooked has 290 mg potassium Zucchini, ½ cup cooked has 280 mg potassium - Tomato, ½ cup fresh has 210 mg potassium 6. Swap outs: Gatorade: What is commonly used on athletic fields is Gatorade. Gatorade is not only laced with sugar, but has chemicals and dyes that contribute to ADD and ADHD. Recharge can be found at health food stores that supplies athletes with necessary replenishing electrolytes minus the sugar Soda: Swap out just soda, which contains 12 teaspoons of sugar, for seltzer with cut up fruit for infused flavor. Chia Almond Cinnamon Drink: Chia is an alternative way to get Omega 3’s and fiber in your diet. Sprinkle it on oatmeal, salad and yogurt to for a gluten-free crunch. (Chia Recipe: Just add 1-tablespoon of chia, 1-banana- 1-cup of chocolate rice milk and add to blender) a perfect kid pudding. Perfect Kid Swap: Go-gurt vs. Stonyfield Organic Yogurt Tubes Two popular kid-friendly snacks Go-gurt: Food dyes, red dye #40, blue dye #1, 10g of sugar Stonyfield Organic Yogurt Tubes: naturally milled organic sugar, six active cultures for a better source of probiotics, no dye 7.Dark chocolate:Good News for Chocolate Lovers. Studies showed that one-and-a-half ounces of dark chocolate a day for 2 weeks reduced stress hormone levels. Dark Chocolate also contains an antioxidant polyphenols. A perfect treat for mom’s sweet tooth. 8. Get kids Involved: getting kids involved in the kitchen plays an important part of allowing them to take an interest in cooking, let them look up healthy recipes and pick one night to cook it. Perhaps get them enrolled in a cooking class. 9. Grocery shopping: Take kids grocery shopping with you, let them get involved and pick out three new foods they would like to try. 10. Quality counts: We know kids have picky palettes at times, we will hope kids develop wider taste bud ranges as they mature, in the meanwhile you can supply them with healthier choices and reward them when making positive changes. *Healthier food options for a Healthier Family! Power up with a Protein breakfast Salem HSA Meeting Notes June 13, 2014 Presidents’ Report: Dawn reflected on her tenure as President. Many thanks were given out by both Dawn and the 5th grade parents leaving the Salem community. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Thank you to Mrs., Friedman who is leaving Salem to teach music at Weber. Nancy explained that the outgoing Executive Board met and voted on what will be funded for next year by the HSA. These included: -Hydration Station- This is a water filter station for filling up water bottles. Has already been installed in other schools in our district. The HSA will fund 2 of these stations and the total cost will be $6,600. -Weather bug Station- This is a device that will be installed where the Kindergarten playground equipment is. This station will collect data that can be integrated into the curriculum by teachers. The total cost of the weather station is $6,490. A grant was received from PWEF to cover half of the cost, the HSA will pay $3,245 for the other half. -Dancing Classrooms Program- The HSA will fund this program again, it is a 10 week long program in the Fall. Total cost of the program is $7,100. Our HSA will pay for half of the cost. -One outstanding item that the HSA Executive Board did not want to vote on without bringing it back to the Salem community for feedback. This is an idea that Mr. Shields and the Director of Technology support. Salem would participate in a pilot program involving the use of IPADS in all four of the second grade classes. This would cost Salem HSA $50,000 for 60 IPADS. This cost includes the IPADS, apps and licenses needed. This is not the full cost of the materials. Ryan Meloni is here to discuss this further and answer any questions we might have. Ryan Meloni, Director of Technology: Mr. Meloni explained how the IPADS would use an ESPARK program along with the data gathered on each child from their NWEA Assessment. ESPARK aligns APPS to the Common Core and is tailored to each individual student’s needs. He used an example of using math APPS for each student on their IPAD. Each student would have a “quest” in which they would focus on a specific content area or strand of curriculum. The goal is for each student to master their quest, and the pace would be differentiated for each student. Each student would work on his or her IPAD using headphones, while the teacher works with the other half of the class. After 8 weeks they should learn the new skill, and would have a 10 question assessment. The question bank used would be the same as used for the NWEA. Mr. Meloni answered questions about future use of the IPADS, expanding the program in future years, why 2nd grade was chosen to pilot with, and many other questions. At the end of his presentation Nancy and Dawn asked that Salem parents please email them with feedback so that the Board can vote on this item. Mr. Shields: We are very fortunate to have strong volunteers who make it all happen in our school. It is all about our students and he is very optimistic about the direction in which Salem is heading. Thank you to Dawn. Last few Weeks: -Can buy school supplies now for next year. -PWEF grant was given for funding to bring the Bio Bus to Port Washington so every 4 th grader can have this experience. -Other PWEF grants Salem received include funding half of the Weather Station, Bio Bus for our 5th grade, Expressive Elocution for 5th grade.
