INTRODUCTION:
Protists are one of the biotic factors found in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. These
organisms are very diverse. They may live as plants, animals, or fungus. These
organisms are usually unicellular, meaning they are made of only one cell. Today we
will begin by looking at prepared slides of protists. They include the euglena, the
amoeba, and the diatoms. You will be required to draw accurate diagrams of these
organisms and label any important parts you see. Then you will be asked to view protists
collected from the stream in the environmental area.
MATERIALS:
Prepared slides of euglena, amoeba, and diatoms
Microscope
Stream water
Microscope slides
Cover slips
PROCEDURE:
I. Observing Pre-prepared slides
1. Obtain a preserved slide
2. Put on microscope and focus
3. Observe in low and medium power
4. Draw observations in spot provided
5. Complete next observation
II. Making wet mount and observing collected specimens
1. Make a wet mount of the pond water
2. Put on microscope and focus in low power
3. Try and observe any movement
4. Focus on anything moving
5. Draw observation in spot provided
OBSERVATIONS:
Euglena
Amoeba
Diatoms
Wet Mount
RESEARCH:
1. EUGLENA
a. Research the niche and habitat for the euglena. Write down a brief paragraph
on your findings.
b. Find a diagram of a euglena and draw the euglena below
2. AMOEBA
a. Research the niche and habitat for the amoeba. Write down a brief paragraph
on your findings.
b. Find a diagram of an amoeba and draw it below.
3. DIATOMS
a. Research the niche and habitat for diatoms. Write down a brief paragraph on
your findings.
b. Find a diagram of diatoms and draw it below.
