Core Values

Definition: The essential set of authentic, timeless values that guide an organization.

• Essential set: 3-5 core values (per Collins & Porras 1 )

 Only a few values are truly core: so fundamental that they will seldom, if ever, change;

 Core values are a declaration of what is important. If you declare everything is important then, automatically, nothing is important. 2

• Authentic / Innate / Pervasive

 Genuine, authentic, sincerely lived

 Innate; they come naturally to the organization

 Currently exist in the organization; should be seen everywhere

[Note: There is a school of thought that core values can also be aspirational – those you wish your church to achieve]

• Timeless

 They stand the test of time; they will change seldom, if ever

 Transcendent: Surpassing others; preeminent or supreme

• Guiding to internal and external audience

 Helps you understand your church identity;

 Important to those seeking a church

Core Values

Life

We are a community grateful for the life and blessings God has bestowed on us. From that heart of gratitude, we believe all life is a gift from God and seek to protect and nurture life from conception until natural death.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Jeremiah 1: 5.

Community

We are a people woven together in Christ. Following the example of our Lord, we set aside self-interest to serve God, our community, and our world. As a family of faith, we love and support one other.

“Love one another as I have loved you.” John 13: 34

Catholic Identity

As part of the Roman Catholic Church, we share in the Church’s rich history, theological and educational traditions, Sacraments, signs of Grace, Catholic social teachings, art, and music.

“Upon this rock I will build my church.” Matthew 16: 18

Liturgy

We value reverent Liturgy and Worship that is God-honoring, Spirit-directed, and life-changing.

Through the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we unite with God and our community.

“Whenever two or more are gathered in my name, I am with you.” Matthew 18: 20

Prayer

We are a community of believers. Through prayer, we draw ourselves closer to God, humbly seek his guidance for us personally and as community, and bind ourselves to one another in faith.

“O God, I seek You, my soul yearns for You.” Psalm 63

Learning

We are called to a deeper knowledge of God and His will for us. Answering that call, we provide lifelong Catholic education and faith formation that enables us to live out our faith and serve as examples of Christian life.

“God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and *… understanding in all visions and dreams.” Daniel 1: 17
