Appendix
Recommended Guide for the Learning Centre/Training Facilities general
A suitable demonstration bench for use by the teacher/trainer and benches for the
students’ practical and laboratory work should be included. These can be laid out around
the periphery of the classroom where the teacher/trainer can see the progress of all
students and monitor them.
A recommended occupancy area of 5 square metres per student should be provided with
a ceiling height of 2700 mm.
Adequate non glare lighting should be provided with a desktop maintained illuminance of
at least 320 lx in accordance with AS/NZS 1680.2.3:2008. Where detailed work is to be
done, for example with circuit boards, the recommended illuminance is up to 800 lx.
For basic electrical instruction these RCD protected benches should be equipped with
shelves containing the equipment in the table following. Many RTOs secure this
equipment in a fixed position. Ideally, equipment should be left in place permanently and
secured. Emergency stop buttons are advised with a master switch controlled by the
teacher/trainer.
For the off-job component of the Competency Standard Units students should be
instructed in an air-conditioned classroom having an appropriate number of desks and
comfortable chairs. This would normally be 15 of each.
Adequate non glare lighting should be provided with a desktop maintained illuminance of
at least 240 lx for classrooms and 320 lx in laboratory situations in accordance with
AS/NZS 1680.2.3:2008.
All classrooms and practical training rooms should have the following equipment installed
within.
