ABHS Science Laboratory Report Outline
Your lab must include the following sections, and focus on the tests done on the
STOMACH CONTENTS ONLY!!!!!
Tile Page:
Should give the title of your report. The title should give reader a good understanding of what the
lab was and why you did it. It should also include in the lower right corner:
First and last name
Hour
Date
**Note: you should actually type all of the names of each section of your pre and post lab
report, then, write what is included in each below. When asked to write paragraphs,
ALWAYS use proper paragraph format.
PRE-LAB
Scientific Concept:
(One sentence) Explains the scientific concept you are learning/using in the lab.
Purpose:
(One to two sentences) What were you testing for? What was the reason your were doing the tests?
Hypothesis:
(Three paragraphs) Each restaurant meal should have its own, short (3-5 sentences) paragraph. Use your pre
lab write up as a guide.
POST-LAB
Introduction:
(One to two paragraphs) Summarize the problem (murder investigation). Explain how performing these tests
can assist in the investigation.
Procedure:
(Four paragraphs) One for each indicator used to test stomach contents. DO NOT LIST IN STEPS! The
procedures MUST BE written in paragraph format. Your procedures should explain in enough detail that
someone who has never done it could read your procedure and successfully perform each test.
Data: Show your data in chart format.
You can make one on the computer. If you don’t know how you can leave space and draw one. Make sure it is
neat!
Describe ALL of your observations, smell, texture, color, clarity. What did the stomach contents look like when
you first put it in the test tube? What did it look like after the indicator was introduced? What did it look like
after heating (if heat was used it that test).
DO NOT INCLUDE THE RESULTS IN THIS SECTION!!!! Don’t tell if it was positive or negative or
which organic compound was present. You will do this in the RESULTS section!
Results:
(Four paragraphs) HERE is where you explain what your data means! Explain what you did, what happened, if
it was a positive or negative response, which organic compound was or was not present.
Ex. ______________is used to test the stomach contents for __________. When _________ is added to the
stomach contents it changes from a thick chunky brown solution to a thick, chunky, ___________ solution. This
is a (positive/negative) response and shows that the organic compound _______is/is not present.
Discussion:
(Three paragraphs-One for each restaurant/meal) Compare your results to all three of you hypotheses.
Explain, based on what you have learned over the unit, which organic compound should be present in each meal
and compare to what you hypothesized would be in each meal.
Conclusion:
(One paragraph) Now discuss which meal you feel is the best choice based on what
you have learned
and what your results from the organic compound lab were. Your conclusion SHOULD NOT be based on
observations such as, “it looked like sauce”, or “it smelled like pizza”!
Use the constructive and problem solving response format:
Ex. The objective is to ______________so that___________. First, ____________. Next,
_____________________. Then, _______. Finally, when comparing results to each meal ________. This tells
us___________.
Be sure you have followed the following guidelines:

USE PASSIVE VOICE (NO FIRST OR SECOND PERSON PRONOUNS!)
o This is one of the most difficult parts! Double, triple check your paper after you think you
are finished.
 USE PRESENT VERB TENSE, NOT PAST TENSE!
o This is another one of the most difficult parts! Double, triple check your paper after you
think you are finished.

NO NUMBERS AT THE BEGINNING OF A SENTENCE.
o Ex. Benedict’s solution, 15 drops, is added to the stomach contents.
o NOT: 15 drops of Benedict’s solution is added to the stomach contents.

Final draft should be typed-

General Grammar is correct
