Ellen has worked in and around public schools for
the past ten years. She received her master’s degree
in education from USM and has taught English at S.
Portland High School and English as a second
language at Windham Adult Education and Maine
Medical Center. Ellen became actively involved in
the education renewal process in Portland Public
Schools four years ago, when she designed and
coordinated a large-scale community engagement
study circles project for that school system.
Currently, she serves as Chair of the Portland
School Committee. Ellen lives in Portland with her
husband and two children.
Dana comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of Rhode Island. Her interests have
included: Economic analysis in the formulation and
assessment of environmental and natural resources
policies.
Stephanie comes to Bates with a degree from the
Minnesota/Université de Provence, France. Her
interests have included: Caribbean Literature and
Culture; Modern and Contemporary French and
Francophone Literature and Culture; Avant-Garde
Literature and Theater; Francophone Caribbean and
African Cinema; French Language and Culture;
composition, translation, grammar and stylistics.
The Reverend William Blaine-Wallace earned his
bachelor’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College in
NC and received his Master of Divinity degree with
honors from the Lutheran Theological Southern
Seminary in Columbia, SC. For the past two years,
Bill has practiced as a therapist and faculty member
of The Salem Center for Therapy, Training and
Research in Salem, MA. Prior to that – he served
13 years as rector of the Emmanuel Church in
Boston.
Kiki comes to Bates from Bowdoin College where
she worked in their Production Department. She
likes to make and sell jewelry.
Chris is currently finishing a Ph.D. in Urban
Planning from Cornell University and is helping to
raise a son.
Joanne comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of Maine. Her interests have included:
literature and writing.
Michael comes to Bates with a degree from
Princeton. His interests have included:
Examination of the surface chemistry of titanium in
an attempt to improve its function as a surgical
implant.
Nicole comes to Bates from Bank of America where
was a Teller Manager. She graduated from
Wheelock College with a BA in Elementary Ed and
Mathematics. Nicole lives in Lewiston with her
husband and eight-month old daughter – Samantha.

Amanda’s experience includes four years in the
Aramark Foodservice system at USM in Portland.
During her time with Aramark, she extended her
work experience during summers at Camps Laurel
and Fernwood. Most recently Amanda was Baking
& Pastry Instructor at the Culinary Arts Division of
Lewiston Regional Technical Center.
Lorraine comes to Bates from Dingley Press where
she worked for the last eight years. She likes to go
camping, do gardening and loves playing
Playstation.
Nick comes to Bates with a degree from St.
Petersburg State University, Russia. His interests
have included: Finite Group Algebras, Algebraic
Coding Theory, Noncommutative Rings, Finite
Dimensional Associate Algebras, Finite Fields and
Computer Algebra Systems.
Melinda is very interested in conservation – she is a
board member of the Androscoggin Land Trust.
Her hobbies include: painting, photography,
knitting, hiking, canoeing and reading. She is the
oldest of 6 and has 3 grandchildren.
Ahlam comes to Bates with a degree from
Claremont Graduate University. Her interests have
included: Risk-sharing at all levels.
Dan comes to Bates after working for 16 years at
Bath Iron Works. He enjoys the guitar, drawing and
a good book.
Steve has developed software in many environments
– from government lab to dot-com start-up. He
previously worked in the IT department at Bowdoin
College. He lives in Pownal with his wife, Marie,
who teaches ethnic and historic dance, and his
daughter, Siona. Steve is an avid musician who
plays music of many cultures on clarinet and
saxophone.
Larry comes to Bates from Dominos in Auburn
where he was the Evening Manager. He enjoys
music and is currently the lead singer for Walenga –
a heavy metal, local band.
Korrie comes to Bates with a degree from Johns
Hopkins. Her interested have included: Travel,
linguistics and language, international music, film
and yoga.
Peggy comes to Bates with nine years of academic
and school library experience. She is inches away
from completing her B.S. in the Library Science
Program at the University of Maine Augusta.
Peggy and her family recently moved to Minot.
Eric comes to Bates with a degree from Johns
Hopkins. His interests have included: Islamic
studies.

Janice comes to Bates with a degree from
Wisconsin-Madison. Her interests have included:
Translation of Latin American and Spanish women
writers.
Nancy comes to Bates as a tenure-track faculty
member with a degree from Illinois, UrbanaChampaign. Her interests have included: Emotion
processing and emotion regulation.
John currently runs his own business “Lajoie’s Gas
Services. He enjoys camping as well as watching
and coaching hockey and is a big-time Maniacs fan.
Ryan currently attends Thomas College where he is
pursuing his B.S. in Computer Information Systems
and M.B.A. He is a native of Lewiston and
graduated from LHS in ’02.
Scott moved here from Washington state and most
recently was an Assistant Manager at Gary’s Quick
Stop.
Connie brings 10 years of experience from the Mast
Landing School Library in Freeport. She lives with
her family in Freeport.
Prior to coming to Bates, Christie was a graduate
student processor at the Bentley Historical Society
Library at the University of Michigan. She also has
earned her Masters of Science in Information,
Archives and Records Management from the
University of Michigan.
Helen comes to Bates with a degree from
Connecticut. Her interests have included: Teaching
in foundations and educational studies.
John comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of North Texas. His interests have
included: Public Law – civil liberties and rights
policy (obscenity, voting rights), the influence of
precedent upon lower courts, judicial review.
James is from Vermont and has experience working
in a deli before moving to Maine and changing
careers. He began working in construction and
plumbing and did some roofing with IRC, a local
roofing company. He returned to the food service
industry with a position at the Grid Iron Sports Bar
& Grill before becoming part of the Bates Dining
Team.
Marylyn comes to Bates from Mt. Holyoke College,
where, for the past two years, she had been the
Assistant Director of Admissions and Coordinator
for Diversity Programs and Outreach. Prior to her
work in college admissions, some of Marylyn’s
other work experiences include: Diversity Outreach
Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association in CT,
English teach in S. Korea, professional specialist
working with at-risk teens at the Santa Fe
Community College in FL and Spanish teacher in
the Miami public schools. She holds the following

American Literature, Ecocriticism and
Environmental Studies, Translation Studies,
Ethnopoetics and History of Ideas.
Karen comes to Bates from Premier Landscape
Center. She enjoys spending time with her family,
landscaping and gardening.
Hillel comes to Bates as a tenure-track faculty
member with a degree from Harvard. His interests
have included: State infrastructural power in Latin
America.
Roberta comes to Bates with a degree from
Stanford. Her interests have included: Medieval
narrative and medieval popular culture.
James comes to Bates with a degree from Yale. His
interests have included: Modern Western religious
and philosophical thought and biomedical and
psychiatric ethics.
Teresa comes to Bates with a degree from Yale.
Her interests have included: Constructive theology
with concentrations in feminist theory, cultural
studies and historical theology.
Before coming to Bates, Pat served as Assistant
University Archivist at North Carolina State
University, where he also received his Masters in
Public History.
David is a graduate of Middlebury College with a
MBA from Harvard University. Following a 17year career in banking, he worked seven years in
educational fundraising at Waynflete (an
independent day school in Portland). David lives in
Cape Elizabeth.
Ed comes to Bates with a degree from USM. His
interests have included: Teaching, coaching,
curriculum and leadership.
