To-Night’s Meeting

Neryla Jolly form the School of Applied Vision
Services – Vision and Driving Project proved to
be an interesting guest speaker with a message
for us all. She certainly had us all thinking
about our driving skills.
The Festival of Cultures at Homebush West was
held last Sunday. Shirley and her BBQ team did
a great job as always. We had lots of Rotarian
helpers but sadly not a lot of sausage buyers.
Still we showed a small profit and we showed
the Rotary Flag.
So to the AGM for 2005. I suspect that board
positions for 2006/7 will be keenly sought and
that is surely a good omen for the future of the
Rotary Club of Strathfield.
A fun night coming up next week at the Golf
Club, 6.15 for 6.30pm. The usual meal and cost
for adults. A special meal and no cost for
children. Mr Alacazam will entertain and Santa
will be in attendance.
Saturday brings Carols in the Park and Bert
Houston and his team have put in a lot of time
and effort into the planning of the night. Shirley
and her team are rarin’ to go . I know we will all
be there to make Strathfield Rotary’s part in the
Carols the best ever.

Ray McCluskie introduced Neryla Jolly from the
School of Applied Vision Services at the
University of Sydney. Neryla is heading a Vision
and Driving Project that is researching vision
standards and driving for senior drivers. Failure to
meet the vision standard often results in drivers
losing their license regardless of their practical
driving skills. Vision changes as we grow older
but the extensive experience which senior drivers
have, potentially enables them to adapt to vision
changes and remain safe.
Neryla’s team of researchers from The University
of Sydney Driver Rehabilitation Unit is seeking
volunteers, to undertake a vision test and be
observed whilst driving to determine whether:1. a change to vision does affect the ability
of a driver to detect visual stimuli when
driving
2. Non driving vision tests can predict
driver performance in the detection of
visual stimuli when driving.
There is a particular need to test experienced
senior drivers whose vision meets the
licensing standards. They are seeking
participants who are both: over the age of 60 years
 And have recently had their vision tested and
been advised that their vision is at a standard
to enable them to hold a license.
The study is being undertaken at the.Lidcombe
Campus of the University. There is no charge for
participating in the study. To arrange an
appointment or to ask any questions you may

Neryla was thanked by Harley Tarrant on behalf

Address by Nicholas Smith
Nicholas thanked the Club for enabling him to
attend the Summer Science School in Canberra.
He hopes to pursue a career in the sciences and
feels the school will be a great insight into the
paths available.
Nicholas will address the Club again on his return
form the Science School.

declared 1-15th January 2006, 2-26th February

your club and neighbors clubs or your friends
want to participate for this noble cause on Polio
National Immunization Day. Our society will love

Scientists Discover New Element

A major research institution has just announced the
discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science.
The new element has been named "Governmentium".
Governmentium has one neutron, 12 assistant
neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant
deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311. The
311 particles are held together by forces called
morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of
lepton-like particles called peons. Since
Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However,
it can be detected, as it impedes every reaction with
which it comes into contact.
A minute amount of Governmentium causes one
reaction to take over 4 days to complete, when it
would normally take less than a second.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 years; it
does not decay, but, instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant
neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact
Governmentium mass will actually increase over
time, since each reorganisation will cause more
morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This
characteristic of the moron promotion leads scientists
to believe Governmentium is formed whenever
morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This
hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical
Morass".
When catalyzed with money Governmentium
becomes Administratium, an element which radiates
just as much energy, since it has half as many peons
but twice as many morons.
