COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide an opportunity to learn and adopt
methods necessary to achieve success in college. Topics will include
study techniques, communication skills, time planning, critical
thinking, health issues, community and campus resources, managing
personal and relationship issues affecting many college students. The
focus will be on the practical application of each topic.
PREREQUISITES: NONE
INSTRUCTIONAL
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1.
Discuss how the student is responsible for their experience in college
and describe ways they can create a successful and rewarding adventure at
college.
2.
Describe and utilize a mode of communication that is accurate in sending
and receiving information, that facilitates listening, and that is effective in
interaction with friends, family, roommates and/or instructors.
3.
Examine and prepare for personal issues that face many college students
including budgeting money, substance abuse, health related practices and
personal relationships.
4.
Match resources that are available on campus and in the community that
can assist students with personal issues listed above. Topics will also
include library research, course changes, employment, financial aid,
independent study, discrimination and other social issues.
5.
Describe and discuss different procedures for planning, monitoring and
managing time.
6.
Discuss different procedures for focusing attention on the task at hand
such as reading, listening, taking notes, typing or taking examinations.
7.
List guidelines for creating effective plans that contribute to success.

Thirty-three Discussion Boards Posted On-Line
330 point total.
Students are required to “reply to” at least one
other students posting in 10 discussion boards
Post students name in reply to.
100 point total.
Eight On-Line Module Tests at 15 points per
120 point total.
Three Projects required:
- 32 Day Commitment
100 point total.
- Nutrition Exercise
100 point total.
- MEP - Each student will develop My
Educational Plan. Guidelines are in the course
Module.
150 points
Final Exam, On-Line.
100 points
On-Campus attendance is required for the dates
indicated in the Course Syllabus. Missing the
mandatory first class will result in a 100 point
deduction. There is no make-up date for a late on-line
final exam submittal.
Assignments must be completed by the due date listed in the course
syllabus. Late assignments will be reduced by 50% of the point total
if completed within two weeks of the assigned due date. Project more
than two weeks late will not be accepted or graded.

899-800=B
799-700=C
699-600=D
599-0=F

Course Policies and Procedures
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Any student found to have submitted another person’s work for credit, or who is
observed cheating on an examination will receive a grade of F for the course and will
be removed from that course for the remainder of the term enrolled.
Incomplete Grades
The College policy will be followed for incomplete grades. Students must meet the
criteria listed in the College Catalog or Student Handbook to apply for an incomplete
grade.
Class Disruptions
Students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct listed in the College’s
Student handbook. Cell phones and pagers should not ring in class. Any student who
disrupts a class will be asked to leave the classroom, a second occurrence will
result in the removal of the student from the course with a grade of “F.” No
children or visitors are allowed in the classroom.
Request for Accommodation
The Office of Services to Students with Disabilities, Rm 208, Student Services
Building (DMC) will coordinate any special needs a student might have while attending
the course. Student’s with special needs will be provided with the necessary
documentation which the student is required to provide to the course instructor.
The phone numbers are 259-6035 and 253-7526 (TTD). The student must contact this
office prior to requesting special accommodations from the instructor.

Course Policies and Procedures
Academic Appeals
Students must adhere to the standards of academic performance established in the
course syllabus, course outline and addendum to the course syllabus. Students should
first ask the instructor if an error in grading has occurred. If the grade remains
in dispute, the student may contact the Academic Dean, Dr. Mary Bendickson for an
appeal. No change of grade will be made without the approval of the course
instructor or Campus President.

First Class Assignments
Welcome to your College Success Class. Before you leave class today make sure you
have completed each of these assignments.
1. Go to the Discussion Board #1, and post to the class what your 32 day
commitment is going to be.
2. Go to Mail, and mail to your instructor, Vicki Schnurr, the time of day and what
days you are going to work on this class. This should add up to at least 4 hours a
week.
Example: I will work on this class Monday, Friday, Wednesday, Thursday
from 12 to 1 each day.
You must tell me the times each day, and the days in order to complete this
assignment. If you change your mind during the semester, you must email and tell me
when you are going to do your work each week. This will help you commit to doing
your work.

Adjusting Your Internet Explorer Security Settings
Internet Explorer has security settings that may conflict with WebCT. You can adjust your Internet
Explorer Security Settings as follows:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Tools at the top of the screen.
3. Click on Internet Options
4. Click on the Security Tab at the top of the screen
5. Click on the Custom Level button toward the bottom of the screen
6. Scroll down to Miscellaneous
7. Look at the Access data sources across domains buttons
8. Click on the Enable circle, it should turn green when active
9. Scroll down to Navigate Sub-Frames across different Domains Heading
10. Click on the Enable button
11. Scroll down to Scripting of Java Applets Heading
12. Click on the Enable button
13. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen
14. Click on Yes when asked to change the security settings
15. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen (or use Apply if OK is not highlighted)
16. Exit Internet Explorer and start WebCT.
