PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As all of you know, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $100 million to Rotary
for the purpose of helping eradicate Polio from the planet forever. This was a matching grant
Challenge meaning Rotary must also raise $100 million over the next three years. District leaders
were originally asked to encourage each of their clubs donate $1000. At the TRF Workshop held
last Saturday (8-23-08), it was suggested that it would more 'fair to all concerned' to raise the
same amount of money on a per capita basis rather than on a per club basis. Based on the number
of members in District 6960, each member would need to donate only $25.00 annually for three
years to meet the Challenge. That's less than 50 cents a week! Yes, our club can meet the
Challenge through our fund raising events but I personally will feel more a part of the world-wide
effort by collecting the loose change out of my pocket each day for a while and donating directly
to help END POLIO NOW.
Ava Hils and Don Dolan joined Barry and Dantia Gould at Shells Restaurant last Wednesday for
an informal 'after hours' gathering. We all got to know each other a little better and had a good
time. The next social gathering at the same time (5:30 pm) and same place will be Wednesday,
September 3rd. We hope more members will join us. Stop in for a few minutes or stay and eat
with us.
HIGHLIGHTS OF AUG. 19 MEETING--MEETING CANCELLED BECAUSE OF
HURRICANE FAY: NOTES FROM AUG. 13 BOARD MEETING
The following report would have been given in remarks by Barry Gould at the Aug. 19
Club Assembly. Since that meeting was cancelled because of Hurricane Fay, it is being
included in this week's bulletin.
Giving his President's Report at the Aug. 13 board meeting, Barry Gould noted that average
attendance at club meetings is down. He said it is possible to do e-club online makeups which
could help some members but encouraged members to come more regularly if possible. There is
an E-Club link on our club website.
Barry Gould also reported that there would be a meeting of club presidents from our area in Port
Charlotte on Aug. 23, after the Membership/TRF workshops. One item up for discussion is how
the three clubs in our area can work on fundraisers together. The West Bradenton Rotary Club's
Taste of Manatee fundraiser is coming up Nov. 1-2 and opportunities to work on this event are
being explored.
* Tom Creed was scheduled to give a talk on the Rotarian magazine at the Aug. 19 meeting,
which was cancelled. The magazine talk will be given on August 26th meeting if time allows.
* Dantia Gould, public relations chair, recommended that our club take part in three parades (July
4, 2008 Parade, Privateers Christmas Parade, Sean Murphy's St. Patrick's Day Parade) and three
island fairs (Bayfest, WinterFest, SpringFest) in the 2008-2009 Rotary year. Total anticipated PR
3
budget for the year is $295, of which $115 already has been paid for an ad to run five times in the
Island Players program.
* Pam Schlueter reported that the Fundraising Committee, chaired by Michael Northfield, will
come up with ideas for future fundraisers between now and the end of October. The attempt will
be to identify fundraisers for specific projects and then appoint a chair for the fundraiser, a
different focus from the past.
* Plans are well underway for the 2008 Rotary Extravaganza on March 14, 2009 at St. Bernard.
Theme is "Spring in Monte Carlo." Rosann Creed and Dantia Gould, co-chairs of the event, have
named the following committee chairs: Tom Creed, entertainment; Don Fernald, special
fundraising; Andy Price and Michael Northfield, donations; Laura McAdams, program book;
Lynn Zemmer, tickets; Judy Rup, decorations; Jim Dunne, public relations and facility liaison;
Annamarie Riethmiller, secretary; Robert Sesterhenn, auction procedures/computer chair.
Catering will be done by ezra. The goal is to everyone all club members participate in
the 2009 Extravaganza in some way.
* Our club received a thank you note from Jennifer Penich, who is in Finland on a Group Study
Exchange. Our club along with others in the district contributed $50 so she could travel with a
group after the activities in Finland.
At the Rotary Foundation meeting held immediately after the board meeting, the board voted to
donate $500 to the Crissman quads of Sarasota. (See related story in Rotary Announcements, this
issue.)
BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK--None
ROTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS
* The family of the Crissman Quads has invited our club members to join the family on Sunday,
Sept. 14 at 12 noon for a "very special fundraiser and support rally" for the Crissman Quads at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5659 Honore Ave., Sarasota. The church is asking for any
donations or gifts of any size and amount to help the Crissman Quads. Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans Foundation will be matching all grants up to $5,000, which means our club's $500.
contribution will double. If you plan to attend, let the church know (941-921-3673). If you are
unable to attend this event and still would like to support the Crissman Quads, send you donation
to the church at the above address (5659 Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL 34233) and put for "The
Crissman Quads" on your check. Checks should be made payable to Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church.
* The District 6960 web site now offers information on the history of our district.
* The Taste of Manatee, sponsored by the West Bradenton Rotary Club, is set for Nov. 1 and 2 in
downtown Bradenton; members are urged to keep their calendars clear to help the sponsoring
club staff the event. This will help call attention to Rotary in a positive way.
* Our club is one of three Rotary clubs in our area that will participate in the "Getting To Know
Rotary" membership reception to be held at a location to be announced in Bradenton on Oct. 1.
The Bradenton and West Bradenton Rotary Clubs also are taking part. The reception is by
4
invitation only and is expected to attract about 50 people. Last year's membership reception at
the Beach House Restaurant resulted in our gaining four new members.
* New additions to our web site include a Rotary Media section. This section includes a Rotary
Golden Theater Radio Show, which offers a series of radio dramas that Rotary produced for its
50th anniversary in 1955. It also has RVM Videos featuring ShelterBox and RI International
President DK Lee's public address. The newsletter of District 6960 web site is now available on
our club's web site (www.annmariarotary.org) as well as the district's web site.
* Please remember to turn in your make-ups to Judy Rup at freshfruiti@hotmail.com. Also,
please remember to sign in.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Jean-Gabriel Chelala is trying to set a record as the first person to circumnavigate the globe using
human power. Along the way, he is sharing his inspiration with Rotarians.
Chelala began his journey in Paris on Jan. 13 '08, bicycling 1,375 miles to the South of Portugal.
He continued by pedal boat to Morocco and the Canary Islands, eventually crossing the Atlantic
and landing in Saint Martin.
Along the way, he braved 17-foot waves, 35-knot winds and an encounter with a whale that
destroyed his rudder. In all, the 27year old civil engineer journeyed 65 days across the Atlantic
Ocean in a 27 foot pedal boat. Landing on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, Chelala was
short on funds and looking for friends. A director of a marina referred him to the Rotary Club of
Saint-Martin Nord, Guadeloupe, French West Indies.
Chelala spoke to the club, describing his journey and message of the strength of the human body
and spirit. Rotarians were so impressed, they named him an ambassador of their club.
Chelala continued on his journey to Puerto Rico, where he met John Richardson, assistant
governor of District 7000 (Puerto Rico). Richardson also was inspired by Chelala's determination
and positive message.
"After spending a couple of hours with Jean-Gabriel talking about his quest, we concluded that he
should connect to [Rotary's] global network and share his message, which is so much like our
own," said Richardson. "An ordinary person armed with the strength of his conviction can pedal
around the globe in much the same way as, [with] Rotary, ordinary people do extraordinary
things."
5
Chelala has since added stops at several U.S. Rotary clubs to his itinerary, including the Rotary
Club of Chicago. He plans to begin the next 22,000-mile leg of his journey by bicycle from Fort
Lauderdale, FL to Alaska on Sept. 11.
He will complete his journey by cycling through the contiguous United States, Canada, and
Alaska, crossing the Bering Sea and Siberia, and returning to Paris.
Chelala now carries a Make Dreams Real pin with him. "To say the least, he is a very special
guy," said Richardson.
