Psychology 2010 Homework Assignment 1 4 pt. Due __One week from today___________
This homework assignment gives you drill and practice in the use of some more data analysis
“tools”. Specifically, the tools are graphical techniques and numeric summaries of
characteristics of the data. Both types tell us about the three characteristics of data – central
tendency, variability, and distribution shape.
A committee at a local university was recently appointed to come up with a new mascot.
After days of deliberation two new mascots were decided upon. However, the committee
could not decide which of the two would be more acceptable to the student body. So it was
decided that the two proposals would be presented to two different groups of students. If there
were a "significant" difference in approval, the proposal with the higher approval rating would
be chosen. If there were no "significant" difference, the less expensive of the two would be
used. A psychologist was chosen to conduct the study. Students were randomly chosen from
the university's master student registration list. Half the students were shown the first proposal,
Werlot, a take-off on the 1996 Olympic mascot. The other half were shown the second
proposal, Goshzilla, a politically correct giant lizard inspired by the horror movies of a similar
name. The data are below. Each score is a "Suitability Rating" on a scale of 1 to 100, with
100 representing the most favorable rating and 1 representing least favorable.
Describe the data
i. With dot plots – one for each group. Use the same axis labels for each group.
ii. With the statistics requested on the answer sheet. Compute them by hand. You should use
SPSS or Excel to check your answer. Note that SPSS automatically computes the Standard
deviation using the N-1 formula, but in Excel, you must select it as STDEV.S if you’re
inserting a function. Turn in a separate sheet showing your hand computations.
