Achievement slowly improving over last 3 years for AS Human Biology. Value added analysis For A level grade 3 – Improvement of 1/2 grade by all students or 50% of students improve by a grade For AS level grade 3 - Improvement of 1/2 grade by all students or 50% of students improve by a grade Key Areas for Improvement: Review 9th Dec 2010/11 Target 90 80 20 72 5/4 90 100 100 25 100 5 95 Grade 2 3 3 3 2 1 1 4 1 3 Coursework Moderation report identified some over-marking (especially for A2) and a need for more rigorous standardisation (AS level). Improve procedures for standardising coursework marking. Attend AQA meetings, hold standardisation meeting for Coursework marking. “Green” EV report next year. A2 value added only satisfactory and only 15% high grades Declining numbers year on year for both AS and A2 Human Biology. Gender inequalities in success rates – strategies to be investigated Course co-ordination issue. Look to LL to take over from January 11 At risk students Sue and Laura to meet in January for standardisation exercise prior to starting c/w and actual moderation Blue to Black Alps (feb 18th) Use of chances charts – can be a less motivational tool because of relatively poor predicted grades, but being used with caution/sensitivity More regular updating of ILPs for students where they reflect and set own targets Biology next year. Hopefully we can run Human Biology parallel to this. Increased A level applications for 2011/12 More sciences on offer alongside Biology – Chemistry (2010), Further Maths, Physics (2011) LW and SB discussed strategies: More activities for boys and presentations. Case by case analysis Review in summer term for new co-ordinator appointment 2011/12 Meanwhile dDOP is covering the role. December 2010: AS – Charlotte Wilson struggling – monitor closely and offer ALS. A2 – resit module students currently having 2 hours pw ALS from SB: one hour for HBIO1 resit and one hour for HBIO2 resit. 4 students attending this(HM, DU, & SB). Some of those who cannot attend at these times have been encouraged to set up self-help/study buddy provision (LM & SA) and to infill into AS classes as revision for resit modules (3 students). Xmas revision classes:LL AS, SB A2 Student voice January 2011 review: Progress/Behaviour AS January module predicted pass rate is 81%. Ie 4 might fail. ‘At risk’ students at AS: Milo Rafferty shows reluctance to join in with some activities in LL lessons. Maxine Cambage seems to lack focus in class. Roman Moon continues to daydream and is often late and does not write notes unless heavily prompted. Matthew Suggitt – late to lessons recently and still not wholly engaged in learning. Actions – Add more info onto Pro-monitor by end of today. Ask A & P mentor to see Maxine next week as she is also falling far behind in BTEC. Put ALS in place for all 4 of these students after half term (Identify common time, SB to contact Tracy Hunter) At A2: Predicted pass rate is 86 – 100% Amy, Lee and Beth can be too chatty at times. ALS to be put in place once Jan module results are known – this will come out of A level budget. Action: SB to contact Tracy Hunter to arrange ALS times for mid-March. 4. Q4 feedback AS feedback comments include: Varied opinions of preferred styles of T & L – but indicates variety being used. Most agree there is a lot to learn in a relatively short time. A few requested more exam technique preparation. Action: LL & SB to increase amount of assessment using past exam paper questions and HSW questions. Water taps obscure the view of the ewb – Action: SB to contact Gary Rogers to see if sinks and taps can be removed as they are not used but are in the way. A2 feedback comments include: January Exams Current attendance Current retention Learners like the topic handouts as a useful summary of topic for revision. Positive comments on teaching – prefer one teacher (not 3). Some would like more practical work. Most like textbooks and some like Blackboard (not all). Action: SB will try to add more activities, experiments & trips to each topic. Next module mainly ecological so could have visits to Saltholme etc. Majority agree that some students talk too much and this is distracting. Action: SB to change the seating arrangements for the start of the new module and ask persistent offenders to leave the room for 5 minutes. The AS group felt that the January module was fair (some found it hard and some found it easy). The A2 group liked their January exam – and so did SB. December 2010 AS: 94% A2: 93% End of January AS attendance stands at 93.11% but has improved since Christmas. Lateness: Roman Moon & Matthew Suggitt – esp recently on Tuesdays at 11.15am. Actions – Tutors made aware via pro-monitor. Also A & P mentor. A2 attendance is 92.66% Abby Parry has poor attendance due to health issues and pregnancy. Beth Atkins has poor attendance which needs to improve – she may drop out as already does 3 other subjects. Action: Tutors and A & P mentor informed. Both students are on contract and Abby is improving a little now. End of January AS: 100% (though one person did transfer to childcare) 22 remain.
