African American cinema I, The [videorecording ] : Oscar
Micheaux's Within our gates.
[Washington, D.C.] : Library of Congress, c1993.
The earliest surviving feature directed by an African-American,
Within our gates tells the story of a young African-American
woman who seeks a northern white patron for a southern school
for black children. The scenes of lynching and attempted
white-on-black rape may be a response to D.W. Griffith's The
birth of a nation.

African American cinema II, The [videorecording] : The scar of
shame (1923) and Sissle and Blake (1926)
[Washington, D.C.] : Library of Congress, 1993.
Sissle and Blake : a short filmed in Lee De Forest's New York
studio with his sound-on-film process in 1923, four years
before Hollywood began to experiment with sound. Pianist Eubie
Blake and Noble Sissle perform their jazz composition
"Affectionate Dan" and a jazzed-up spiritual.
Scar of shame: In no film was the racial theme more apparent than
in this story about an ill-matched marriage between a black
concert painist and a poor, lower class black woman. Secretly
ashamed of her, the young man keeps his wife hidden from his
socially-prominent middle-class mother. Despite the melodrama,
it is a strong statement on the issues of class and the color
caste system which existed within the African-American
community. This was the first film of the Colored Players Film
Corp. of Philadelphia.

de Flora Gomes.
San Francisco, CA : California Newsreel, [1998?]
"In 1973, independence was proclaimed [in Guinea Bissau], ending
five centuries of Portuguese colonization and a decade of armed
struggle. [This film], Gomes' first feature-length film,
portrays this critical period in history through the story of
one woman, Diminga, whose husband is fighting on the front
lines. The camera captures Cabral's assassination, the ending
of hostilities, and the reconstruction of the economically and
spiritually devastated country struggling with drought and
famine. The term "Mortu Nega" means those that death did not
want, and Gomes films a ceremony using 3000 extras, in which
survivors call upon the dead, asking them how they can go on
living in such terrible conditions.”
