KORE (Khmer Outreach Retention Education) For United Khmer Students, the Khmer Outreach Retention Education (KORE) program is one of the largest and most rewarding undertakings for the 2011-2012 academic year. This program is dedicated to fostering academic and personal growth for high school students from five Long Beach high schools: Long Beach Poly, Millikan, Wilson, Cabrillo, and Jordan High Schools, in addition to various community youth organizations like KGA. KORE is a year-long commitment for both the student and the mentor. The long term goal of this program is to increase college enrollment and attendance among the Khmer community. Each high school student will be assigned a mentor from recruited UCLA mentors who will provide academic assistance and personal advice to students. Academic services include guiding students through the college enrollment process, improvement of academic standing through tutoring at Mark Twain library, and ultimately preparing students for the transition from high school to college. There will also be a focus on personal academic and career interests, as addressed by field trips and a Mentorship Conference. Mentors are expected to put forth effort and commitment in order to ensure a stable and successful relationship with mentees. Maintaining a relationship with mentees can be time consuming, but keep in mind that devoted KORE staff are always available for assistance and advice in balancing KORE activities with school work, as well as any other advice needed in order to maintain a successful relationship with mentees. Throughout the year, monthly KORE meetings will serve as mentor training. In Winter 2011, all students will also be invited to attend a Mentorship Conference at UCLA as well as the Annual Culture Show put on by UKS in the Spring. In addition to its goals of academic achievement and higher education, KORE emphasizes the development of leadership skills, personal growth, skill building, and cultural awareness in a fun and rewarding experience. The year-long KORE mentorship program consists of: On-site tutoring at Mark Twain library to improve mentees’ academic standing, with emphasis on teaching study and homework skills. This year, we will also incorporate career and college preparatory workshop. Advice and assistance, both academic and personal, achieved through constant contact with students via phone or email. Mentorship Conference and College Tour provide students with information on college preparation and various college options through workshops, resources, and motivational speakers. BBQ Mixer will be a social event where prospective mentors and mentees engage in relationship building activities while interacting with other students from other schools. Field Trips to allow mentees to explore their academic interests, whether it is liberal arts or the sciences. Past field trip destinations include the Museum of Contemporary Art and the California Science Center. Community Involvement to help them fulfill community service hours and build leadership and personal skills.
