Book and Supply List for Chieftain Institute 2015-2016
Please note that parents purchase all student books with only a few exceptions. With our
wonderful ability to order books from great catalogs/online resources such as Rainbow Resource
(1-888-841-3456, www.rainbowresource.com) and Amazon (www.amazon.com), you can easily
purchase the needed textbooks. Books may also be ordered directly through the publishers.
Many parents also buy/sell their used Chieftain Institute textbooks at the end of the year at
our Open House, but if that is the case, please make sure you are purchasing the correct book
and edition we will be using the next year.
Physical Science
Exploring Creation with Physical Science, 2nd edition, published by Apologia (1-888-524-4727).
Only the student textbook needs to be purchased, not the separate booklet with the tests and
answer keys. We also recommend the Companion CD-Rom (not the text on CD) as enrichment for
the students.
Biology
Biology, 2010, by Miller and Levine. Published by Prentice Hall, a division of Pearson. Only the
student textbook is needed. Make sure the book has a red macaw on the front, and is the
ON LEVEL version. There are other levels for students who struggle with reading, but we will
use the on level version. The book cost is $89.97 new from Pearson, the publisher, with online
links. Amazon frequently has used copies for less, and you can rent the textbook from Amazon.
Chemistry
Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd edition, published by Apologia (1-888-524-4727). Only
the student textbook needs to be purchased, not the separate booklet with the tests and
answer key. Please note that you need the 2nd edition.
Physics
Conceptual Physics, 9th edition, by Paul Hewitt. ISBN 978-321052025. The cover has an ocean
scene with a sunrise or sunset on it.
European History
Lynn Hunt, et al. The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures, Volume II: Since 1500. 3rd
Edition. Bedford/St. Martin's Press, 2008. (ISBN: 978-0-312-45296-4) There is a picture of 4
men on the front.
Students only need to purchase the main textbook (volume II: since 1500). There is no need to
purchase any of the supplementary document readers that carry the same title as the main
textbook. The textbook is available on Amazon.com and Abebooks.com. If you have any

purchased. A TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is required. The silver edition is nice, but isn’t

Precalculus
Precalculus with Limits: A Graphing Approach (3rd ed.) by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards,
published by Houghton Mifflin. There are other editions of this book; the version we are using
is ISBN 0-618-05291-7. Chieftain is permitted to reproduce the solutions manual and will
provide a copy to each student; families will only have to pay the copying fee. A graphing
calculator, the TI-84 Plus model is required.

Students will borrow copies of Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, an anthology published by
Prentice Hall. You do not need to purchase this book. Students will need to purchase Red Hot
Root Words Book 2 by Diane Draze ISBN-13: 978-1-59363-129-1 and the Writer’s Inc
handbook listed above from Introduction to Composition. Students will also reimburse the school
for any novels used in the class (approximately $50.00).
American Literature
Students will borrow copies of The American Experience, published by Prentice Hall. You do not
need to purchase this book. Students will also reimburse the school for any novels used in the
class (approximately $50.00).

expensively but I believe you can almost always google a CBD coupon for free shipping. We know
some of you may already have these books on your bookshelf and we are truly sorry for asking
you to buy new copies, but it's very important that all of the students have the same book to
follow along in class and for assignments.
