The Outsiders
Project Selection Sheet
Choose one of the following project ideas about The Outsiders, or come up with
your own idea and have it approved by Mr. Rossetti. Each project must be
submitted in three stages. Stage 1 will consist of a brainstorm/pre-write that will
suggest your ideas (Due April 3). Stage 2 will consist of a rough draft (Due April
6) that will be reviewed and returned. Stage 3 will consist of the final copy due on
April 20.
Project Ideas:
The Outsiders is written from Ponyboy’s perspective. However, he not the only
character who has a major role in the book. Select another character from the
novel and re-write two scenes from that person’s perspective.
Prewrite- a web and/or brainstorm story
Rough Draft – the story
Final draft - 3 page, double space minimum- correctly used dialogue is a
must.
In chapter 11, Ponyboy spends some time pondering one of Sodapop’s old
yearbooks. Create some pages from a yearbook from Ponyboy’s high school. Be
sure to include descriptions of the major characters. The writing element will
be more than that of a “regular” yearbook- 500 words minimum.
Pre-write- draw rough sketches of your yearbook pages
Rough draft – all of the writing to be included in the yearbook
Final Copy - 4 pages minimum, full color pictures required – the writing
must be 300 words and typed.
Do you wonder what happened next? Write a sequel to The Outsiders where you
predict what comes next in the lives of the characters. Be sure to write it as a
story, not just an essay explaining what you think. The story must show
evidence that you understood the book and its characters.
Pre-Write – web and/or brainstorm story
Rough Draft- write the story
Final Copy - 3 page, double space minimum- correctly used dialogue is a
must.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the novel? Write a letter to S.E.
Hinton telling her exactly what you liked or disliked about the novel. Look up
S.E. Hinton’s address on the internet and include a correctly addressed
envelope.
Prewrite – list of likes/dislikes about the book
Rough Draft of letter
Final Copy - 1-2 pages typed, single space, using proper letter format –
see your Write Source 2000 pp 241-250 – also, include envelope but
do not fold the letter up and seal it in the envelope- if you actually
want to send it- we’ll do that after we grade it!
(By yourself) After the fire, a newspaper article is written about the boys being
heroes. Write this newspaper article. Then, after writing the article, make the
newspaper page including headlines, pictures, etc.
Pre-write – Web- be sure to read pp 107-108 of the novel carefully
Rough draft – write the article – 500 word minimum
Final copy - 1-2 pages formatted as a newspaper- you need to fill all the
space- look at a real newspaper- no space is ever left empty.
(In a group of no more than 3) Create a newspaper for the novel. This should
include articles describing the major events from the novel. You may also include
editorials on the boys’ heroics, on if they boys should be guilty of murder or if it
was self-defense, etc. When completed, your newspaper should LOOK like a
newspaper. There should be at least two columns, pictures with captions, a name
for the paper, and headlines. All articles MUST be typed. Your paper needs to
have a MINIMUM of six completed articles and each person in your group
MUST write AT LEAST two articles. Articles should be at least 300 words in
length.
Pre-write – Brainstorm/Web your articles, possible pictures, headlines
Rough draft – write all articles – 300 word minimum
Final copy – 4-6 pages formatted as a newspaper – fill all the space.
