The Outsiders Project Selection Sheet Choose one of the following project ideas about The Outsiders, or come up with your own idea and have it approved by Mr. Rossetti. Each project must be submitted in three stages. Stage 1 will consist of a brainstorm/pre-write that will suggest your ideas (Due April 3). Stage 2 will consist of a rough draft (Due April 6) that will be reviewed and returned. Stage 3 will consist of the final copy due on April 20. Project Ideas: The Outsiders is written from Ponyboy’s perspective. However, he not the only character who has a major role in the book. Select another character from the novel and re-write two scenes from that person’s perspective. Prewrite- a web and/or brainstorm story Rough Draft – the story Final draft - 3 page, double space minimum- correctly used dialogue is a must. In chapter 11, Ponyboy spends some time pondering one of Sodapop’s old yearbooks. Create some pages from a yearbook from Ponyboy’s high school. Be sure to include descriptions of the major characters. The writing element will be more than that of a “regular” yearbook- 500 words minimum. Pre-write- draw rough sketches of your yearbook pages Rough draft – all of the writing to be included in the yearbook Final Copy - 4 pages minimum, full color pictures required – the writing must be 300 words and typed. Do you wonder what happened next? Write a sequel to The Outsiders where you predict what comes next in the lives of the characters. Be sure to write it as a story, not just an essay explaining what you think. The story must show evidence that you understood the book and its characters. What did you particularly like or dislike about the novel? Write a letter to S.E. Hinton telling her exactly what you liked or disliked about the novel. Look up S.E. Hinton’s address on the internet and include a correctly addressed envelope. Prewrite – list of likes/dislikes about the book Rough Draft of letter Final Copy - 1-2 pages typed, single space, using proper letter format – see your Write Source 2000 pp 241-250 – also, include envelope but do not fold the letter up and seal it in the envelope- if you actually want to send it- we’ll do that after we grade it! (By yourself) After the fire, a newspaper article is written about the boys being heroes. Write this newspaper article. Then, after writing the article, make the newspaper page including headlines, pictures, etc. Pre-write – Web- be sure to read pp 107-108 of the novel carefully Rough draft – write the article – 500 word minimum Final copy - 1-2 pages formatted as a newspaper- you need to fill all the space- look at a real newspaper- no space is ever left empty. (In a group of no more than 3) Create a newspaper for the novel. This should include articles describing the major events from the novel. You may also include editorials on the boys’ heroics, on if they boys should be guilty of murder or if it was self-defense, etc. When completed, your newspaper should LOOK like a newspaper. There should be at least two columns, pictures with captions, a name for the paper, and headlines. All articles MUST be typed. Your paper needs to have a MINIMUM of six completed articles and each person in your group MUST write AT LEAST two articles. Articles should be at least 300 words in length.
