GENERAL CARPET INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS Carpet Seaming: 1. Length Seams: a. b. 2. Cross Seams: a. b. c. 3. Indicate cross seams necessary due to layout of areas. Hold cross seams to a minimum. Do not place cross seams in conspicuous locations, at pivot points, or other locations where specified. Seams at Doors or Similar Wall Openings: a. b. 4. Indicate location of intended length seams on seaming diagram. Install carpet in same direction, unless otherwise specified, indicated on Drawings, or approved by Architect. Install seams occurring at and parallel to door opening widths directly under center of door thickness when door is in closed position. Do not install seams at doorways which run perpendicular to or at an angle through the door opening width. Seams at Corridor Direction Change: Seams occurring at corridor change of direction shall follow a wall line parallel to carpet direction, unless otherwise indicated or approved. B. Fitting Carpet Around Protrusions: Cut around protrusions through carpet in a neat and close fitting manner as approved by Architect. C. Exposed Edges: D. 3.03 1. Protect exposed edges of carpet with specified accessory products. 2. Fasten accessory products with adhesive or as otherwise recommended by product manufacturer. DIRECT GLUE-DOWN CARPET INSTALLATION 09 68 16 - 8 Broadloom Carpeting MPS Master SECTION 09 68 16 A. B. General Installation Requirements: Do not glue down carpet to existing wood floor. 1. Adhere carpet directly to subfloor using methods and products recommended by carpet manufacturer. 2. Maintain correct trowel notches throughout carpet installation as recommended by carpet and adhesive manufacturers. 3. Carpet shall have a 100 percent contact with substrate. Use cutting tools having razor type blades for seam preparation. Follow carpet manufacturer's recommendations for seam cutting methods. Treat edges cut for seaming with a seam sealer if recommended by carpet manufacturer. Apply sealer to edge of carpet at base of pile and at cut edge of primary backing. Excess sealer getting on face of pile shall be removed with solvent recommended for that purpose by manufacturer of seam sealer. TACKLESS STRIP CARPET INSTALLATION Installation of Tackless Strips: 1. Fasten tackless strip to floor leaving a margin or tuck-in space equivalent to about 2/3 of carpet thickness. 2. Use pre-nailed tackless strips for concrete floors. 3. Use a tackless strip with (3) rows of pins in the larger commercial or heavy traffic areas. 4. If especially hard concrete is encountered and prenailed tackless strip will not provide a successful installation, install tackless strips by cementing to floor or drilling and pinning. 5. When cementing to floor, adhere strips with a good quality adhesive as recommended by tackless strip manufacturer. 6. When drilling and pinning, strips shall be drilled and pinned for use of screw-type hardened masonry nails to form a permanent anchor on 6-inch centers. Installation of Pad: 1. Install pad in largest possible lengths using the minimum number of sections. 09 68 16 - 9 Broadloom Carpeting MPS Master SECTION 09 68 16 C. 2. For concrete subfloors, securely adhere pad to subfloor with cushion cement of a good quality to prevent shifting, buckling or other movement. 3. Apply a slight stretch to pad to flatten and free pad from bubbles and wrinkles. 4. Position seams in pad so that seams in carpet will not fall directly over seams in pad. 5. Trim pad flush with inside edge of tackless strip. Installation of Carpet: 1. Cutting: a. b. c. d. e. 2. Seaming: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. 3. b. c. d. b. A. Stretch carpet taut (drum tight) evenly in both width and length so as not to develop wrinkles and buckles from normal use. Stretch carpet by using power stretchers and other devices for leverage to secure proper stretch. When using a kicker to stretch carpet, be certain kicker has gone through to backing, not catching only surface loops of face of carpet. This will prevent tufts from being torn loose. Securing Carpet: a. 3.05 Seams and cross joints, where required, shall be hand sewn. Hand sewn seams shall be sewn with a suitable carpet thread such as Linen 18. Stitch rate shall be no less than (3) stitches per inch with a 1/2- to 5/8-inch depth from each edge. Stitching on back shall be ironed flat and coated with a clear drying suitable latex adhesive. Seams shall be completely free of puckering and shall lie flat. Matched seams shall be straight and patterns shall match in every respect. Seams shall have a breaking strength of no less than 100 pounds. Stretching: a. 4. Do not cut selvages unless absolutely necessary. Where cutting is required, edges shall be sealed, side and back, with a clear drying adhesive. Place a 2-inch wide strip of glue on back and let dry. Cut is made in center of glue strip. Glue is then also applied to cut edge. Securely fasten carpet to tackless strip so that pins have penetrated carpet backing for a positive grip in order to hold carpet stretched. Securely tuck raw cut edges behind tackless strip with no frayed ends or edges showing. CLEANING General Requirements: Upon completion of the installation, remove waste, tools, and equipment, and excess materials except those specified to be for Owner’s maintenance. Vacuum clean carpeted areas with a commercial-type vacuum cleaner. 09 68 16 - 10 Broadloom Carpeting MPS Master SECTION 09 68 16 3.06 PROTECTION A. Traffic Restrictions: Allow carpet installation a minimum of 24 hours to cure before subjecting carpet to traffic and moving of furnishings or equipment. B. Covering: If work is required in an area of the building that has been carpeted, protect carpet with a not less than 4 mil clear plastic cover or equal during remaining work.
